I am a member at cakecentral.com and did a search for my little pony and lots of really great ideas popped up! It's free to join the site, you can't see all the images unless you are a member. I love that site even if I don't make cakes on the level they do, I just like looking at the pictures and reading about cooking tips.
I love rainbow cakes, I've made a few and they are really fun.

I've had brushables on several cakes (birthday, wedding) and they've never gotten a tail full of frosting. I did get to lick frosting off of some feet, but that wasn't a big deal.
I know I've seen people who were worried about getting frosting on ponies (and vice versa) have put clear plastic between the ponies and cake, or cut a little square out of a styrofoam plate. You could also style their hair so it doesn't get into the cake- little do-ups and cute bob-style tails.
I'd really love to have a dream castle cake- that's amazing! And the Merry-go-round cake is so cute! I probably would have tried to jam the MGR ponies onto it- I know it would end messily, but hey- Merry-go-rounds!

I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thanks so much to Calico_Star for her beautiful work on my Avatar!

I made this one for a friend/client.  They asked for 'as flamboyantly 'My Little Pony' as possible'.  It's one of my favs;

Everything is in buttercream, except the rainbow, clouds, stars are the bridge, which are fondant.  Oh, and the ponyvilles of course.  I went with them because they didn't have real hair (this was before G4 came out).

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Finally, a thread I actually know something about!  :biggrin:

I've made about four rainbow cakes so far, and I like to use this recipe! Sadly, I don't have any pictures of my creations easily accessible at the moment, but I can tell you right now if there's one thing I'm good at, it's making cakes.

Tips:

1) Use a silicone cake pan, if you have one (and if you don't you should totally go buy one! They're brilliant!) Just be mindful of the maximum temperature for some of the cheap ones. If it's less hot than what the recipe asks for, just keep the cake in the oven for longer. It'll be fine. Just check it every five to ten minutes by poking it with a wooden skewer or a toothpick - if it comes out clean, it's done!

2) You're going to need a lot of mixing bowls so you can mix the colours in with the cake batter, but you don't necessarily need a whole lot of cake tins like the picture implies. I just used the same one, and it seemed to work fine.

3) If you use royal icing for the outside of the cake, it'll shatter when you cut it (which looks pretty cool in a chaotic sense!) but it's going to look better initially, be easier to transport (cause you won't have to worry about smearing it everywhere) and you won't get icing in your pony hair. You can use buttercream, though, it's just going to be sticky!

3) To get a really crisp and clear version of Rainbow Dash's cutie mark, I ended up printing it out, cutting it out, tracing it onto the cake (royal icing) then removing one of the outermost sections of my cutout, tracing the new outline, repeat repeat repeat until you have the line art for her cutie mark. Then pipe icing around it to create little barriers, then mix some more royal icing with a little milk to make it wetter and "flood" the sections, one at a time in the correct colours. You'll end up with a cutie mark that is ridiculously good-looking once it sets! (wait for one section to set before you do an adjacent one)

4) If you don't have piping bags, get zip-locks/snap-locks/plastic sandwich bags, put a couple of dollops of icing in them, and then snip off a teensy bit of the corner. Tada! You now have piping bags!

5) The cake ends up really, ~really~ rich, so cut kids thin slices cause it's pretty much packed with sugar and butter. Otherwise they won't be able to finish their slice and that's a waste.

6) Rainbow cakes need a lot of patience, especially the first time. If you're serious about decorating, set aside a good 8 hours or so just in case, so you're not still making it at 1AM (this has happened before several times...) But it will pay off, so don't give up!

If you have any baking catastrophes or questions about this recipe, feel free to drop me a line- I pretty much know it back to front by now  :rolleyes:
