Ugh, my scented G3s are yellowing.
« on: February 06, 2013, 08:29:02 AM »
I don't have any pics but..

My G3 Tropical Surprise and Soda Float are both starting to get this brownish, yellow discoloration coat on them. Soda Float has lost her scent completely, but where you can barely smell it, which is along her chest, she has this brown, heavy coat where you can actually feel the texture of it, and it won't come off. The other half of her is fine. Tropical Surpise has this discoloration in numerous places.

I can't tell if it's just coincidence or not since I both got them second hand, but I've never had this problem with any other G3 except for the scented ones. I think this was a problem with Cherry Treats, so it's just aging and there isn't anything I can do about it? It's not really noticeable unless you hold them up close, thankfully.
I've already given them a good scrub, so I can't imagine that it would be dirt.

Yeah, I've heard of their plastic deteriorating faster than other G3s due to their scented plastic. The Divine Shines set with their transparent plastic had a similar problem.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to fix plastic breakdown. Keeping them out of sunlight in a well-ventilated room can slow the process down. I also heard something about talcum powder helping to stop stickiness.

BluePhoenix has pretty much covered the current advice. We don't know yet how fast these G3s are going to ooze out, so there's no real 'treatment' bar washing/talc and keeping them out of sunlight! My Cherry Treats G1 is that colour but she's not sticky.

Odd (and worrying) that they're from the two sets/years of scented ponies, now I'm wondering if my Lavender Lake and the others are going to start oozing, I already ditched the Divine Shines because they were doing that... Gah.

I haven't had this problem yet but thanks for the warning. Did you try acetone? I should try putting one of my spare Divine Shines in alcohol to test if it helps. My ponies tend to hold up pretty well since they are in a dry room with little light.

Oh that's such a shame :(

Unfortunately it does seem to be a pattern that having something added to the plastic makes it a little less stable and perhaps thats what speeds up the break down. As others have said wiping them down, I use baby wipes, and talc to try and soak some of the stickiness. I have also heard of others scrubbing with rubbing alcohol works to a certain extent although I havent tried this myself.

Aw man, I seriously hope this doesn't start happening to mine.  Are yours loose or MIB?

Mine are both loose, yes.  :)

I tried using acetone and baby wipes, but it generally seems stuck to them

You will need to rub over the pony really well in order to get through and remove the stickiness. I forgot the other thing I used lol - eye make up remover pads. You know the ones designed to get mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow all off your eyes in one go? Its great at cutting through oily substances and I have used the little soaked pads on a couple of ponies in the past.

I've got a few that are scented that are still in package. I'll have to check them out for discoloration. Especially Citrus Sweetheart...
