eBay: Shipping discrepancies

While signed out I found an item I'm interested in and added it to my cart. On the item's page it shows $35 + 15 shipping but in the cart shipping was listed as free. This didn't change over many days and viewings of the cart. Everything else I added/removed showed up with their listed shipping prices normally. After signing in the cart is now saying the shipping is $15.

I obviously don't mind paying the real shipping but I'm a little confused. What could cause a discrepancy like this on a single item between being signed in and signed out?

Did you do the entire transaction on one unit? I know sometimes my phone will show things differently than my laptop, even shipping. I know that's probably not the answer but just a thought.

I've heard that phones can falsely show items as having free shipping when, in fact, they don't.

I'm just going to confirm that this definitely happens. I've had some with shipping marked differently. I've also had it do currency conversions drastically different between phone and computer while looking at the pages at the same time.

Nope, I've been using my laptop the entire time.

Even before I added anything else to the cart (from other sellers, if that matters) it was showing as Free. I added more stuff, removed things, and changed stuff around (from the other seller) a couple times but the Free never changed at all. It was only different once I signed in.

Could it be "free" if you are in certain locations? So once you logged in and the system knew your shipping address, there then became a charge?

I know ebay can be as bad as some big retailers...always showing the cheapest price/option.

Oh that's a good idea! That could possibly be it. I added the $35 thing to my cart first and didn't do any kind of shipping estimate, although I did before adding the other items to check their full cost.

There was a promotion at some point- I think ebay was covering shipping if you bought over a certain amount. I seem to remember seeing that...
