I hear ya! I tried w/my Nikon D40 for 20 mins to get something decent w/the self timer @ a distance and that went out the window. If your arms aren't long enough all you get is a massive face shot with that kind of camera (not that there's anything wrong with that, but where do you put pony in front of face?).
If you don't have one of those fancy phones with a nice camera or someone else to take this type of photo for you it's bit more complex... LOL
