What to do with collections during a bug bomb?
« on: July 01, 2015, 11:08:42 AM »
The abandoned apartment next door is full of fleas and they've started running into our apartment ): Maintenance are going to bug bomb that apartment first and hopefully that takes care of it but if they run for cover in our apartment we'll have to get them both bug bombed at the same time. I don't know anything about the bomb except that you have to be out of the apartment for at least 4 hours and vacuum/wash all your clothes when you get back because of the film it leaves. Just in case we have to have our apartment bombed, what should I remove?

I'd take my antique dolls, BJDs, expensive dolls (Pullip/Tangkou), doll clothes, plushies, and laptop out for sure. But beyond that I really don't know. Maintenance told us that we don't have to take out anything, aside from all the paintings on the walls, but I really can't afford to take any risks. I've got tons of dolls (mostly playline) and lots of ponies (including customs). Everything is stored in my boyfriend and I's room, where we haven't had any fleas, so I don't know how bombed it would get but I'm really worried about that film being all over my stuff.

They did in the apartments I was living in (everyone because one guy claimed he had bed bugs). They just did it downstairs so I left my collection upstairs as it was. It was fine. Maybe put a towel over them?

Isn't it weird how we bugbomb our homes and worry about the collections, yet we ourselves will be walking around, sitting in, and living in these areas?

Maybe you could close that rooms door so not that much of the pesticide smoke gets in where your collection is?

If you're worried I would honestly seal it all up in boxes. Not a fan of chemicals here and I would love to bug bomb my house because the moths are at it again. But I can't due to having a very environmentally senstive greyhound.

I would seal them in those plastic storage tubs, and then duct tape the edges. I'm sensitive to chemicals though!

Whenever we had to bomb we put everything under sheets and then just washed the sheets when we could come back inside.

I'm with Loa. I would seal everything in airtight containers. Either bins, or cardboard boxes (with all the edges taped up).

Isn't it weird how we bugbomb our homes and worry about the collections, yet we ourselves will be walking around, sitting in, and living in these areas?

Hearing about the film it leaves definitely got me really grossed out... I'll be thoroughly cleaning everything afterwards if we have to end up doing it. I'm pretty sensitive so I'm worried how it might affect me but I'd rather deal with it than have a flea infestation.

Oh my god fleas!

I second Loa's idea

This was my exact reaction when my boyfriend's mom saw one and confirmed it was fleas x.x We don't even have pets!

Anyways, thank you guys for all the suggestions! I think I'll just (carefully) toss everything in boxes and shove them in the car if we have to get it bombed since we don't have many airtight containers. The sheet idea is really good too. I'll probably do that over stuff that would be a huge pain to clean, like chairs and computers.

I, personally, wouldn't remove anything on the offchance of fleas getting in your boxes and... then when you bring them back in, you're bringing the fleas back in as well.  But then the fleas would die when you bring them back in, wouldn't they? My brain never works well in the morning.

If you could put them in boxes, maybe you could cover them with a plastic tarp?

We've had to bug bomb before, yuck.  I took my most sensitive things out (resin dolls, old books, etc) and I piled all my ponies up on the bed and threw a blanket over them, LOL.

Id suggest putting them in a container, but  that's a valid point.  If they are hiding inside the crevices of hair and stuff, youll just bring them back.
