« on: May 06, 2013, 08:46:40 AM »
I always asked myself how the cute little ponies are made. From the start when they are just a mixture to make plastic, to rooting progress. Can someone give me some information about it? Im really intrested in it. :)

I'd guess from prototypes that they start there and so I've read there's a shiny layer on the toy and the toy is then covered with plastic or something.

They had some of the metal molds at one of the conventions and talked about how the plastic was poured in to the mold then air was used to blow the plastic around the mold but this is done on a many hundreds at a time scale on a machine that moves quickly.  Then as the mold cools they are popped open and ponies fall out then they continue on to paint and hair...or something to that effect.

I really want to know this too! I wonder if they were made differently back in generation one in the different countries...

I love watching "How It's Made" show on TLC ( I think? ). Maybe they could do one on the current G4's?

The process begins with an artist making an original.  These can be done in wax, clay, plaster, even some types of plastic or resin.   Once the blank is approved, it gets cut into two pieces (one for the head, one for the body) and the neck plug is added on.  These two pieces are used to make the master mould.  There are a number of ways of doing this, depending on the final materials.  From the master mould they make new blanks which are used to make the production moulds - they usually have to be cut to create seam lines where the mould will separate to release the final parts.  Once these are made, they can be put in a rotary caster which spins the mould in all directions as the hot plastic is pumped in, pushing it into all the areas through centrifugal force.  The plastic cools as it hits the (usually metal) mould, and you have a new hollow part.

Hasbro's methods probably vary, but that's the basics as far as I know.

I've totally thought about this before that I would love to learn more about the process of designing and making the toys. It would be super interesting. I love seeing how things are produced in general though. I remember being really into the episodes of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood where they'd show how crayons or envelopes or whatever were made.
