Customs / Preparing for my first custom...!
« on: June 05, 2023, 07:48:45 PM »
Hi everyone~

I want to make a custom of my OC, Rhapsody! I was going to try and commission her, and I still might do that too, just for fun... but I think it would be more exciting and special if I made her myself.

I can browse other forum posts like I have been for links to tools and where to buy hair, of course, but I wanted to post and see if I could get any second opinions based on her design on what I should do... here she is:

My main thing is the hair, I love her hair looking thick, spikey and punk—not sticking straight out or anything but I definitely want that cool look. Any tips for what type of hair to get? Do you think Nylon would work best or should I try for Kiwi or anything else?  :brow:

I'll likely use clay to make the fetlocks (saw a tutorial on youtube that looks doable!) and follow the gradient paint tutorial for her legs (they are gradient, i just couldn't do it very smoothly with my markers  :) practice makes perfect). And of course, tiny detail brushes for her markings and cutie mark and all that. My main dilemma is just deciding what type of hair to get and what might look best with her metal style.

Thanks for chiming in if you have any recs! Also, I'll be working with a G4 pony. I have a bait G4 Alicorn with me ready to go!

This makes me wonder how many of my old ponycon pamphlets from here in the UK I have. I don't have many pins and things, as I don't usually go in for the gift bags and stuff. But I did have pamphlets and possibly, name badges and stuff. I did have on of those wih Taffeta on it once upon a time...

Great stuff, lovely to see. As a fellow historian, you're right - documenting stuff is very important!

Definitely share if you come across anything!  UK ponycon sounds fun! I lived in York this past year for my MA and fell in love. I must go back, and knowing that there are pony events there too tempts me further  ;)

Amazing photos, thanks so much for sharing!! <3
Everything is so cute, and the program is so well put together!

Still holding out hope to someday, somehow, some way, attend a pony fair. XD

Yes!! I hope you can make it someday! I wish to go back, myself. I have not been since 2009.  :inlove:

Welcome!! Ohh, it's nice to see someone like me - I'm also 24 and grew up with G3  I used to have a massive collection, and though I gave it up ages ago, I still have my favorites with me (especially Queen Rosedust with a pair of original Flutterpony wings)

Happy to chat about ponies anytime

Pony Corral / MLP Fair 2007 Memorabilia

Hi, every pony

I was digging through my basement trying to find something (I did not find it  -_- ), but in the process discovered some things I had no clue that I still owned. I did at one point find a handful of MLP buttons and pins from the 2008 and 2009 fair respectively, but I gave some of them away (along with some fair memorabilia) to people who adopted my customs from me. I feel like I should have photographed them before doing that in hindsight, so just to ensure I don't make the same mistake again, I wanted to make this post to archive the 2007 fair content that I have!

As a historian, I'm particularly obsessed with archiving things, and in particular fandom content. Fandom means a lot to me and preserving its history is something a lot of people don't think about—fandom is a hobby, something fun to do in your free time. A lot of people move onto different fandoms and leave old ones behind, in the process getting rid of a lot of fandom history thoughtlessly. It's inevitable, but whatever we can save I like to document as much as I can.

Here is what I have!

Included in the image is Sevenbelles, one custom creator, and the name tags of two of the customs she made that my family purchased for me (I was spoiled, clearly ) Jewel and Harmony have since been rehomed and I wish that I had found these sooner so I could have sent them off together. Ah well...

I will only do closeups and a flip through of the program. The badge has my name on it and I'm going to wear it to Whinny City Pony Con next weekend for fun with the Applejack badge

Here is the pamphlet:

I hope you enjoy looking back on this even if you still have your own copy! If you were at the fair, I'd like to know too. I was only 9 years old when I went and I have always been very meticulous about keeping things that are important to me in good shape, but I know that in this case, it's thanks to my grandma that everything is in such good condition! She saves a lot for me!

Oh, this is hard. There's a few for me.

I think I have to include Rosedust, Sunny Daze, Wisteria, Aquamarine (name of custom), and my OC, Rhapsody.

Here's a pic of me as a child with Aquamarine, up on top (there's another custom I got at the 2008 fair held lower). She became one of my fav OC's to play with!

Rhapsody is self-explanatory, she was my childhood OC, inspired by The Last Unicorn film and since her whole story is that she was "the last winged unicorn." If only Friendship is Magic existed when I was still a kid so that I would know to call her an alicorn!

As for the others; Wisteria was my first ever pony, so she's special for obvious reasons, and Sunny Daze was who I considered my active pony. I took her outside with me EVERYWHERE so she's hilariously beat up from gong down countless park slides with me. My sister braided her tail back then too and its still braided, so I also think of her when I see Sunny Daze.

Finally, Rosedust has always been my favorite character, since as a kid my absolute fav thing to do was watch The End of Flutter Valley arc episodes over and over. I made my friends watch it with me too and we all played pretending to be flutter ponies, my best friend was always Morning Glory and I was Rosedust. She sits on my bookshelf so I get to see her every day.

She's in lovely condition, I've named her Sapphire over the years, but feel free to change it~ haha. I'd be willing to let her go for $20. From what I remember she didn't cost as much as some of the others. She's in perfect condition.

Also, I can move to "customs for sale" if necessary now that I've decided to sell them :)

Welcome Back!

We were at the same 2008 Pony Fair :) That silver unicorn looks kind of familiar, was the seller at one of them?

I think as long as you can identify the seller, just try to sell it for what you paid for it, or just auction on ebay with a reserve and let the market decide.  But I am sure someone here would want them, for sure.

Wow hello! :D Haha indeed she was. Her hoof says '08 so you might have seen her before little me wanted her for my unicorn kingdom ;)
I have a 6 year old niece and a 7 month old niece, so they're having a blast with the ponies I loved as a kid (especially the more loved ones, if you know what I mean  ), but I know these are just too delicate for them.

Thanks for the thoughts, that helps! Most are in pristine condition, only a few have some sort of blemish/stain, so I think for the top-notch ones, I could probably sell them at about the same price as when I got them.

Hello MLP Arena!

Long time no see! I went to the Pony Fairs of '07, '08, and '09 as a little girl, and now I'm over halfway through college with a massive collection of all sorts of ponies. I know how to deal with the G1's, G2's, and G3's that I've collected... but at those Fairs I accumulated lots of customs.

I see that people sell customs but they are usually customs that they've made themselves. All of the customs I'm looking to get rid of are ones I haven't made myself. Some of the people who made the customs wrote their names and the year made on the hooves, but others simply left initials or nothing at all  :(

I'm having a garage sale soon and I'd hate to include the customs, since many of them have delicate horns and additions... they'd break easily if handled by kids (and could even hurt them if handled carelessly). I know pony collectors are out there so I thought this was the best place to ask what to do.

Is it okay to resell customs, ones that you haven't made yourself?

If so, how much are they usually worth?

If it's not okay, then what do you think I should do? Should I see if any local pony collectors are willing to take them off my hands for no price? I'm not as concerned about the money as I am about getting these gorgeous customs to a good home.

I attached a pic of some of them to give you all an idea.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

That's so sweet! I love to hear about little kids enjoying themselves with their ponies. My 1 year old niece already loves some g3 ponies I've given her. It's so sweet to see them have so much fun with their ponies.
