Title: New game ponies!

I kinda want Peggy Mane but I wish Right Hoof Red had real hair.

hmmm eyes are weird on these to, same makers I guess (the "80s" cross overs)

Okay, okay, these ones are cute. Hate the horse puns in the names but their designs are nice. Except for their eyes, of course. The eye of the in-box Peggy Mane (ew, that name) looks terrible.

Can Hasbro read the reviews/impressions on these things so they can fix the eyes already? XD I'd like to think the complaints about the 2017 ponies led them to improve the G4.5s. In a perfect world they'd listen. A lot of people are on board with these ponies but the eyes are just SO bad that they ruin it. Every person I see talk about them are like "I like them, but something feels off" or "I like them, except for the eyes!". I feel like with G4 it's easy to brush off criticism as "oh it's a kids' toy, kids don't care about quality", but with these it seems targeted towards an older, if not adult audience. I would expect better quality and care put into these.

These ones don't have the custom art like the other crossovers, but I guess it would be harder to come up with something interesting. A pony playing Twister could take up too much space. Something is possible for the Lite Brite pony, though, I think.

I like these but the eye placement bugs me.

hahaha oh my god, how weird! Are there dedicated Twister/Lite Brite fandoms that'll buy these or something??

I have to say, I do like these, though. Peggy Mane's body colour is so pretty!! (hate her name, though) The only thing ruining them are those awful eyes >_< If they could just move them up a bit, they'd be perfect.

Ahhh! I need Lite-Brite! They're so cute! Idc, they're horsey enough. I like that they're using the retro art. And look, the Twister pony has symbols on both sides! Thanks MLP Merch.

I saw these posted on Tumblr and EQD! Fell in love with Lite Bright pony at first sight! Twister pony is fine, but I feel like (white body w rainbow hair) is overdone.

At least Twister pony's eyes can be easily fixed, seeing that the body is white. Doesn't she remind you of Starlite?

Also: "What other Hasbro products can we cross over with?"

...Calling it now: We're gonna get a Mr. Potato Head crossover pony. Hopefully they'll also do a Moon Dreamers one.

Said this on the Trading Post, saying it here too: Part of me feels that Right Hoof Red should instead be called Rainbow Hop (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Slumber_Party_Gift_Pack)

The Lite Brite Pony’s name is Peggy Mane? I agree that’s a terrible name. I like that her mane and tail look like Lite Brite pegs. I would love these if the eyes were placed properly.

Yeah, I showed my mom Peggy Mane (she was a late 60's baby but..close enough!) and she thought it was adorable!

Unfortunately I doubt we would get a Moondreamers pony. They seem to be sticking with brands that are currently active in some way. And the only reason Jem is still active is because there's a huge devoted fanbase that's big enough to throw a yearly convention. I have never heard of a Moondreamers convention.

With any luck, the eye placement will be fixed on the sale copies.

Ah, I see.

I think having a Potato Head-themed retro pony and a Moondreamers-themed retro pony released together would be quite fitting, considering.

Eh, not as such. It's the same sort of crossover approached from the other side, sure, but the shape is more potato and it's not a retro pony.

Reason I want to see a Mr. Potato Head-themed retro pony is because the Potato Heads were one of the "and Friends" shows in the My Little Pony and Friends timeslot.

 I dunno. That'd probably make her price go way up if it did.

I've a suspicion that these were all supposed to be Comic Con exclusives. On the bright side that means they're more readily available.

I'd be down for a Potato Head pony. Why not make the crossover go both ways? :P

I'd love Moondreamers but yeah, I think they'll stick to current toylines :( Don't see why they can't make a Jem pony though. (Unless they consider Jem an "adult" line now... but I feel like these are more aimed at adults anyway, so...)

You'd think that'd be very easy to do. And would make a lot of sense now, since it's Jem's 35th anniversary and Integrity is coming out with a new line of dolls. But don't underestimate Hasbro's tremendous ability to neglect all its girl-focused toylines that aren't MLP.  :P

Whyyy, WHYYYYYY do you refuse to make new brushable characters, Hasbro!?!?

I really love all these new ponies but why they don't have brushable hair really baffles me.
Only ones I'm willing to make exceptions for are the DnD ponies.
I don't like solid hair.

(Although, I have to admit, I love the way they did it for Peggy Mane.)

Peggy Mane for once looks like a cool design. The translucent mane could have only been done on a fully plastic model and makes sense for Light Bright. I'm afraid it's a no from me. It feels like the designers saw the final product and said "good enough." The lack of eye sculpting, the elongated muzzle, and the eye placement, just no.

If they test prototypes of the main toys on kids, maybe they should ask collectors for their input as well on the potential products geared towards them. This mold just looks half-baked, especially holding it against an HQ BF remake. Basic Fun shows that it can be done, yet for some reason, Hasbro won't. Oh well, maybe I'm being too picky :)
Title: Re: New game ponies!
Post by: Dragonflitter on July 26, 2020, 10:36:33 AM
Well, Basic Fun's goal is to recreate something that already existed. That's easy, you just recreate the same molds. These collector ponies are not trying to recreate something that already existed, they're trying to make something new to attract new collectors.

I agree the eye placement makes them look wonky, but I don't think it's fair to compare these to Basic Fun, who are just doing "copy + paste" on toys made in the 80's.

Doesn't stop this mold from coming off as inferior to the actual G1 molds (what with its lack of both brushable hair and sculpted eyes; the latter would act as a painting guide). Or excuse the inept placement of the eyes.

And there's not exactly a lot of effort on Hasbro's part here. They created a single earth pony mold (that I'm betting is only one piece) based off the G1 cartoon's standard pony design, said that was good enough for every last one of these crossovers, and then don't pay a whole lot of attention to eye placement when painting it.

The mould  isn't a bad one at all. I especially like the one with the MLP n Friends sculpted hair, though I am a bit surprised that its not the RMS Earth Pony mould, but yeah the eye wonk is...yick! And I would have liked to have seen the RMS Unicorn, Pegasus and Unipeg mould as well.

Two slightly different moulds make sense for the DnD pack because they want to get the ponies fitting in comfortably, but I personally think Baby Shady- I mean Ghostbuster Pony shoulda been a Pegasus and Twister a Unicorn, whose horn could have been painted like the spinner, or candy-cane striped. Power Ranger coulda been the Unipeg.

Did anyone notice that the Lite Brite pony has a different symbol on her prototype versus on the back of the box?  Which do you like better?

I can't really decide . . . I think I like them both equally.  I guess they decided the sailboat evoked "Lite Brite" more clearly.  I wonder if the pony-shaped symbol was copied from the old G1 MLP Lite Brites (a set which I did have!) or did they make it up?

Seeing as the Twister pony has different symbols on different sides, is it possible that the Light Bright pony is the same?  So maybe what is on the box is on her hidden side?   I do like the Light Bright pony the best out of these.  The Dungeons and Dragons set is cool but I’m not a big enough fan for the price point.

I do agree with Sunset, I think she has two symbols!! Which is really cool.

Also agreeing with Sunset... the DnD ponies price point is... almost insulting, really? lol. I guess that is my stretching her point over my own words, but I really feel it is. I already said enough about it on their official thread, lol.

I had said before I liked how they at least did Lite Brite's hair for moulding, but thinking back on it, glow in the dark brushable hair would have been way cooler.

I like the steps forward Hasbro is taking with these but they still feel very cheap, especially because they are being toted around as collector's items.

I'm talking about the G1 aspects, I had already acknowledged the G3 aspects. There's a reason I call them Mishmash Ponies. But you were flat out ignoring it.

The retro mane six have their eyes in a better place despite the lack of eye sculpting.  Some of them have eyes that slant diagonally and have an almost hieroglyphic look. Looks weird. Why they slipped it down so far on the crossover crew is something I don't understand.
