Pony Corral / Re: MLP Checks
« on: September 13, 2013, 01:32:03 PM »

Nienna, it's going to be another generation or two before checks disappear here. There's too many stubbon old people that refuse to touch a computer... like my aunt! If the USA did away with check she wouldn't have any way to pay bills. My aunt won't touch a computer. She says "computers are the work of the devil". I don't think that she believes that. She's just terrified by technology. I pay about half on my bills online, but I still do write checks for some. My mom pays most of her bills by check. She does pay some online or by phone if she running late, but I always have to help her.

Interesting! I didn't know that, I figured it was all cards/internet transferring as it is here. I used to work as a cashier over twelve years ago and we got checks like once every month maybe? We always had to call a supervisor because no one knew how it worked, lol.

For bills, it's pretty much authorising companies to take it out of your checking account or transferring it by yourself through internet banking. Funny how these things differ across the globe :)

OMG those are awesome, I had no idea they even existed lol. We're they only available in the US?

I didn't even know checks were still in use over there :P They've been gone here for what, ten years? And even then they were already rarely used.

That is actually the point I am making. I just felt it was an interesting thing to think about, as my hubby brought it up. Fluctuation based on willingness to pay. :)

OK, got it now :) thanks for clarifying, sorry.

I just want to clarify that I am not just talking g3. I happen to know a lot more about g3, but I meant in general I thought there was a lull in prices.

Prices are definitely down, but that is simply down to (here comes the dreaded word) 'the economy'. People have less to spend on frivolous things, logical result. Some things are holding their value though- mostly HTF/Nirvana's.

For the rest, it may be because I am not a native speaker but I don't really understand the point you're trying to make. We're making ponies worth less because we're willing to pay less? Yes, definitely the value is determined by what collectors are willing to pay- but, that's really logical to me. Thus, prices/value fluctuates and are not fixed. So, in buying AND selling, everybody looks for the most opportune moment to get the best price. Collectibles will always be a gamble in that way, since you can never be sure things will hold their value.

The vast majority of ponies were bought for children and opened.  By the era of G3, the majority of ponies were still being bought for and played with by kids - but there was already an established collector community, and pretty much everyone purchased entire sets of ponies and either kept them in mint condition or in the box, if they had any desire to own the newest generation.  That is likely why there is so little market for G3's - the people who want them right now already have them, the future collectors who outgrew G3 aren't yet cycling back into nostalgia, and even then it's going to be easier for them to pick up those childhood toys.

This very much! There is simply a more vast supply of G3 and price/value is very much determined by supply and demand. There is more supply, less demand for G3 than G1, for example, so the prices are lower. Also, with collectibles like ponies that don't have a more or less 'fixed' value like electronics have, the price is determined by what people are willing to pay. We as the collectors are placing value on them based on availability and popularity. This is why Nirvanas reach high prices- not many available. Still, a pony may be more scarce but less sought after, and its price will be lower (for example, rare G2s. Some G2s are definitely rarer than say, a Mimic, but the latter will reach a higher price).

Yeah, mail orders were different all over the world! I know that in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) we had the first tooth baby ponies as mail orders, on a card with only a toothbrush instead of the normal boxed variant. I also got Molly through the fanclub, just the doll loose without baby Sundance. Strange, huh?

Oh, that would be SO much more convenient... haha.

Anyway I have gathered some doubles- Twilight with and without wings, Pinkie and AJ that I am willing to pass on at cost of purchase plus shippping. I will also be attending Ponycon and could bring them there. Drop me a line if interested :)

I found something new in a toyshop in the Netherlands this week, when I shared on Facebook it still seemed to be new to everyone so I thought I'd share it here too.

They're sort of surprise eggs with small, squishy (I think rubber) ponies inside. I took a pic of the packaging and of the ponies I've gotten so far. There are the main 6 minus Rainbow Dash but there are two Twilight Sparkles, one with and one without wings.

Pics are lame, sorry.

I don't really have a set budget, but much like other collectors like LadyG I'm looking for more rare/expensive ponies and thus don't buy as much as I used to, which means I can spend a bit more at one time instead of little amounts often. And yes CC is handy LOL!
I've done a payment plan once or twice too.

My collection is insured also, as is my husband's warhammer collection.

Pony Corral / Re: Which G1 set would you most like to complete?
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:47:27 AM »
I chose Princesses. I am OBSESSED. I have the first set mostly complete (dragons, bushwoolies, UK accs, just need some US accs) and working on the second. I just love the tinsel (I'm nuts like that) and the shiny and sparkly hats, wands and picks!

Yaaaaay!! I'm so glad it got there safely and that you like all your things :) Sorry it took so long! Hope you enjoy everything, you deserve it!
