Title: Rate the last movie you watched?
Post by: Leave a Whisper on January 07, 2022, 02:39:54 PM
Fiend Without a Face-It was pretty dull for a b movie. This was a snoozer. And I expected the monsters to be a tad more imposing then small brain snails. 4/10

Midnight in Paris, I had seen it before but it just happened to be on TV, great movie, I loved Owen Wilson in it and it had a nice message about longing for the past, I give it 9/10

Last movie I saw was Don't Look Up

I have to say I can see it happening 110% in society lol. I really enjoyed it for what it was. My emotions were all over the place because of certain scenes in the movie hit close to home. Overall 9/10 a really good watch!

Fassbinder's World on a Wire. I did enjoy it a lot. I guess people like it because it was very prophetic. The fact that there was no CGI and all the tech was based on analogue closed circuit TV made it much better IMO. I enjoyed the modern interiors but not the female 'characters'.

It was interesting, I felt sorry for her while watching this. It seemed like all she wanted to be was loved and accepted.

Don't Look Up- On one hand, it's not really fair for me to review this, as I left ten minutes in to get my earbuds so I could just listen to podcasts while still spending time with my family. On the other hand, it was a movie that made me so annoyed and uncomfortable that I went to go get earbuds. It's a social commentary to be sure, but rather than being clever with it, it just reminds the audience how much the world sucks. When the humor is supposed to come from the situations the characters are in, and you're placing the characters in situations that are just uncomfortable reflections of real life hot issues... it just didn't work for me.

My dad loved it and compared it to Dr. Strangelove. That's his choice. 2/10.

(Sorry for negativity :P)

Looks like quite a few of us watched Don’t Look Up. I can see how it would be divisive, it’s definitely not a feel good movie in any way, but I do enjoy that type of bleak comedy, so I really enjoyed it! It felt a little bit like a modern Twilight Zone if that makes sense. I’d give it a 9/10.

Last movie I saw before that was Licorice Pizza. That was awful. I do not understand why it is getting such rave reviews at all, like, I actually left the theater angry. The story revolves around a 25 year old woman and a 15 year old boy having a relationship. They call it out as weird a couple times but at the end they get together and we’re supposed to just accept it? It’s gross! Even IF the icky age gap wasn’t there, it didn’t seem like the couple even LIKED each other! And there was no real story! It was just these weird, intercut little short stories that never exactly tied together. The only thing saving it from a straight 0 is that I dug the aesthetics. It was at least a pretty movie to look at. 2/10.

Death Rider in the House of Vampires-I went into it with very low expectations. And while I can't say that I was pleasantly surprised. It honestly wasn't bad. It also wasn't the greatest thing I've ever seen either.

I'm not a fan of vampire or western films, and there were plenty of cliches from both genres.

The acting was a little cringey or flat at times, but not so bad that I wanted to die of embarrassment or boredom. The plot kinda trailed off a little. I did like that it looked as though I were watching it on an older glass tv, with the muted colors.

Carmilla and Mina annoyed me.

Glen Danzig was certainly having fun with it. And I liked his opening song, because Danzig is Danzig and he has a great voice. 5/10 Could have been better, could have been worse.

The last movie I watched was the original West Side Story.  I usually like musicals, but I was so tired the night I watched it that I fell asleep (that happens sometimes when I'm exhausted) so I missed part of it.  Out of all the songs I only liked one of them.

The 13th Warrior - very interesting, a combo of taking itself pretty seriously while having a kind of nutty plot, especially the further I got into the movie.  It seemed very strangely assembled, some elements and scenes worked well and others just made me ask where they were going with this.  I really just watched it for the horses, though, of which there are plenty!  5/10 for the overall movie, 8/10 for the horses, lol

Last movie I watched was The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. It was alright. Animation quality wasn't as good as in the theatrical releases and the villain was a bit meh. So not the worst movie I've watched but not the best either. It was enjoyable enough.

I watched The House on Netflix. It pulled me in with a cute stop motion cat in the picture, I had NO idea it was going to be a horror movie, but it was great!

I wish there was more adult animation like this. It was smart, the puppets and sets were all beautiful, and it didn’t rely on being edgy or gross to sell itself. The horror element was very well done, and I thought the themes of greed and commercialism were engaging without being heavy handed. It had just the right amount of surrealism to be unsettling, but not scary.

I just wish the three stories tied in a bit more with each other. I know they all had the overarching theme of the house consuming them but….some more direct call backs to the other stories would have been satisfying. The cats were my favorite. :)

Overall I was pleasantly surprised! 8/10

Yesterday I watched My Little Pony: The Movie for the first time in a year or two - it obviously has its problems, but it also has quite a lot of good moments, plus it prominently features Fizzy and Wind Whistler which is always a good thing in my book, so I give it a solid 7/10

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) - 9/10 made me laugh quite a few times, and i was happy to have finally watched a classic from back in the day. i've seen a lot about it. the story was a bit hard to follow at times & the animated portions were sometimes hard to follow against the real life backdrops, but i know it was sort of a new concept having real life & animation combine in that way so i think they did amazing in that case. surprised disney let this one pass but again, it was the 80s :snicker:

Today I watched Scrooged (1988). I saw it last when I was little, I only remembered the scariest parts of it (the main character's own funeral and Ghost of Christmas Future) As an adult, I understood that plot better and it was pretty funny.  :) 8/10

Old - I'm an unashamed Shyamalan fan and have been since the Sixth Sense. I've been looking forward to this one (I bought it... I have all his other movies too) and it was both what I expected but not. It's actually kind of different from most of his films. It's... softer? There are some very creepy moments in it though. It's take-away message is nice. I think maybe he's getting sentimental in his old age :P

Anyway, I give it an 8/10.

It's the only Shyamalan that I'm able to watch and take seriously allthough the premise has a lot of logical holes. The actors are well chosen (but I'll watch anything with Sigourney Weaver in it).

The Dustwalker or maybe it was just Dustwalker. A movie on Tubi? IMDB? Not sure. My mom recommended it to me because it was made by and stars women (there are a couple of supporting dudes) and that's so rare to find. Plus, it was made in Australia. It was one of those movies that had potential but something was a little off, the acting maybe? Bad CGI too. I'd give it a 5/10.

Ponyo - not great at ranking things but I'll give it a 9/10. Never seen this one before - the ads for the Disney dub put me off back in the day, they were so obnoxious - but the cinema was screening it with subs tonight and I was in the mood for something new (to me), so I figured I'd give it a go. OMG it was so cute and sweet!! Dinging it a star since I think it was maybe 5-10 mins longer than it really needed to be (I'd have nixed the scene w/ the baby).. maybe 9.5/10.. well anyway, it was a good one. ^^ I hope this theatre shows more Ghibli films later, it's so good to see them on the big screen.

The Devil's Advocate (1997) It came on TV yesterday. That one has rarely been shown on TV and I had already forgotten about the existence of that movie. I last saw it in the late 90s. I was too young to watch a movie like that at the time, and I didn’t really understand everything about it. But now I understand and I still like it ... actually even more. I have to buy it for myself as a DVD.
9/10

I had a movie pass to watch all the movies up for best picture. IDK if best picture has been announced yet or not but here are my opinions on all 10! Spoiler: I don’t think I’m smart enough to appreciate these artsy, highbrow movies lol!

Dune: 6/10. I was confused through about half of the movie, however in the movies defense I often get lost in sci fi and fantasy movies. :PI can never keep up with all the characters! From what story points I picked up on the story premise was interesting. The score was awesome too, I think it should win for that if nothing else!

Drive My Car: 4/10. It was just okay imo. It was wayyyy too long without much compelling story. I didn’t feel super attached to any of the characters. The first 45 minutes were pretty much just soft p*rn which I really did not appreciate. The photography/cinematography element was beautiful though!

Power of the Dog: 3/10. This one was just weird! None of the characters were particularly interesting or likable for me. The story was just meh.

Coda: 10/10. This was by far my favorite of the bunch! It was a cute, upbeat story about a deaf family and their struggles. It had the perfect blend of drama and comedy. The story was engaging and entertaining all the way through. It also was an interesting glimpse into the everyday struggles deaf people face.

Nightmare Alley: 7/10. This one was dark, but thrilling! I thought the story was paced nicely and unlike a lot of these movies, the ending tied in nicely with the beginning! The characters were obviously mostly bad people, but they were written in a way where they were still interesting and engaging.

Belfast: 5/10. Average. It just left like, 0 impression on me. I wish it would have focused more on the historical period and events that it was taking place in. I found the historical pice of it far more compelling than the character driven parts. Also Jesus, could they have found more artists to put in the m ie than just Van Morrison?? I’ve never seen a movie dedicate themselves so much to just one artist lol!

Licorice Pizza: I’ve rated this one before, but I’ll rate it again in the context of seeing the other best picture films. 3/10 maybe? I still hated the weird age gap romance and the long meandering story, BUT I do want to give it kudos for casting actors that are not necessarily “Hollywood pretty”. It was refreshing to see people who actually looked like normal people playing the lead roles, and I did like the glimpse into 1970s California!

Don’t Look Up: I also rated this one before, but to be fair, I’ll add it in again. 8/10. It was a funny movie with smart political commentary. The story was compelling and depressingly accurate as to the state of our world today.

King Richard: 10/10. This one was really good too! It was the story of how Serena and Venus Williams’ dad helped train them in tennis. The story was well paced and really interesting. It also had a good blend of drama and comedy. I loved seeing the real clips of the family at the end, the movie did a fantastic job staying faithful to the family’s story!

West Side Story: 5/10. Okay so, I’ll just start by saying I don’t like musicals so that definitely colored my opinion of this movie. It was such a sad serious story set to…the goofiest music ever. It really took me out of the story every time they broke into song, but, I will say the choreography and singing were all very well done! Ansel Egort also really over acted his part imo. There was one scene where he thinks Maria died and his reaction was SO over the top I had to stop myself from laughing! I’ve never seen the original or the stage play, but it seemed like it stayed pretty faithful to the source material, so if you do like the original you’ll probably like this.

I really hope Coda wins best picture! I know that the Academy tends to gravitate towards the really heavy, artistic films but for the average viewer Coda was such a well crafted movie that she’d light on an often overlooked community. To me a good movie should keep you thinking even after you walk out of the theater, and Coda was the only one that did that for me!

My partner and I watched the second sonic movie in 4D the other day while we were stranded in a big city. It was actually really good! It was way better than the first one imo. It was a little silly but that's sort of what I would want out of a sonic movie anyway. The 4D aspect was quite fun, however it did make me a bit motion sick towards the end. Overall, I'd rate it 8/10. There was definitely room for improvement, but it was overall a super fun film.

I got to see an advance screening of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. I’m not a big Nicolas Cage fan, so I may have missed some jokes but it was still a solid 10/10! It was surprisingly clever and oddly kind of sweet? Usually I hate movies that try and be ‘meta’ but this one was fun!

Porco Rosso-It was okay. A bit too goofy and ridiculous, the humor didn't hit. Beautifully animated. Story and characters were bland. 5/10

It's not among my Ghibli favorites.

Willy's Wonderland - Nicolas Cage says zero words and fights possessed animatronics; the man just wants to clean, for God's sake! I love little passion projects and this was the best bad movie I've watched in a while. Unironically 10/10.

I just seen "Father Stu" I liked it because it was not afraid to talk about touchy subjects & the bonus was it had Mark Wahlberg in it. It's a great story that was based on a true story so anyone can watch it and take something from it.
There isn't anything I didn't like about it... so I give it a 10/10

My next movie is Uncharted
If you minus Me being a Mark Wahlberg fan and base this on Tom Hollands acting I would watch this over and over again. Mark is a bonus for me. Definitely a 10/10 it stuck to the games and it was very actionable.

My 3rd movie I just watched Batman new in theaters
It's really now a day batman... the batmobile is a classic car but it's still batmobile like. It's got new twists in it but it also feels very close to thevideo games batman Archylim Asylim & Batman Archim City (Note you don't have to play the games to understand the movie but it's got that same plot or vibe)
I give it a 10/10

I'm not a big movie watcher. The last movie i watched was the original Matrix. i've seen it before but i had forgotten most of it. it was good. i see why it's stuck in pop culture for so long. i would say 9/10. it's not their fault people twist the meaning of their movie.

so from the above review i'm guessing Power of the Dog is not about how dogs are all wonderful creatures?

Power of the Dog: 3/10. This one was just weird! None of the characters were particularly interesting or likable for me. The story was just meh.

Now that I have seen it (it's on Netflix) I have got to say I would give this movie a 8/10 rating. It was a good, quiet drama and very well shot and acted by everyone involved. Not sure what you found "weird" about it.

so from the above review i'm guessing Power of the Dog is not about how dogs are all wonderful creatures?

Story spoilers:
Spoiler
The Cumberbatch character was gay and projecting onto the boy, trying to drive his mother crazy and separate him from her. In the end he dies because the boy catches onto him and gives him a cow hide tainted by a disease that the Cumberbatch character touches with bare hands to make a rope. It's a family drama set in a time when women had barely any rights and homosexuality could get you killed and makes you feel for both the villain (Cumberbatch) and his victim (Dunst).

Nightmare Alley: 7/10. This one was dark, but thrilling! I thought the story was paced nicely and unlike a lot of these movies, the ending tied in nicely with the beginning! The characters were obviously mostly bad people, but they were written in a way where they were still interesting and engaging.

Also seen this one lately (on Disney Plus) and gotta say it disappointed me greatly. I have seen the original movie (a film noir) and prefer it over this remake. It's not a bad film but it had so many Guillermo DelToro clichés in it, I ended up making a bingo card and had one bingo and one almost bingo x__x It was comical and silly. Like putting a three eyed fetus in a jar into this movie or showing faces caving in... it's like DelToro has to cram these things into his movies. I love his work usually, especially Faun's Labyrinth, but this movie was creatively bankrupt. I'd give it a 5/10 for all the shoddy, ill-placed DelToro-isms.

The Ledge (2022) 8/10
The film was different from what these types of mountaineering survival films usually are. It was a positive surprise. A few exciting scenes from the movie were found and felt on my feet. I would never be able to climb any high places.  Even the climb to the ladder is a little awful.

Class of 1999 - it may not be some Masterpiece Theater grade filmmaking, but if someone is into 80s/early 90s gritty sci-fi B movies, they will likely enjoy this one, plus it has Malcolm McDowell; overall I give it 7/10.

Fear Street 1994 It's boring and annoying, it doesn't capture the atmosphere of the books, and it's just a bunch of people running around screaming, dying, and being little jerks too each other. 4/10

I watched Little Women. I liked the actors from Harry Potter (Emma Watson) and Atonement (Saoirse Ronan) being in it, since they are both quite striking personalities and I think they did a good job. However I think Saoirse Ronan provided really the only compelling performance. The actor who played Laurie looked too young compared to the girls, so what should have been the most relatable plot line became a little bit odd. Like an elementary school dance where the 10-year old girls are still a lot taller than the boys. Anyway, the non-linear structure made the narrrative more interesting. I have read the book but don't remember whether this was the case in the book.

I watched it today and it's so good. It's the original cut, so the lyrics are originals too and some of the things said about the Indians is not PC but despite that I think it's a 10/10

I just watched Vita and Virginia. I would rate it a 6/10. I enjoyed the historical references and the efforts they made between Virginia's life events and her works of writing. The depictions of her mental health issues were very accurate I imagine and very striking. The scenes with the Bloomsbury Set were charming, and the scene with Lady Sackville towards the end was perfect. However I think some of the acting was a bit of a letdown. Some of the scenes between the two women were beyond the awkwardness that you would expect when two people fancy each other. They were just too awkward full stop and the timings were off. I'm not sure who was worse. I noticed that Elizabeth Debiki seemed better when she was with the other actors, so I blame Gemma Arterton unfortunately. The other performances were all pretty good, especially the two husbands. There was something unconvincing about Arterton's Vita and the dynamic didn't work for me. The portrayals of both women lacked the great character that I imagined they posessed in life.

I just watched 'The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea'. It was excellent in it's creepiness! Mark Kermode compared it to The Wicker Man. I heard it was based on a Japanese story and I think something might have been lost in translating it to a UK cultural context. I think to fully appreciate the suspense and horror you have to place the story according to the values still prominent in the 1970s regarding the status of women. But it was delightfully horrid!

I watched that new version of "Persuasion" (based on the Jane Austen novel) on Netflix starring Dakota Johnson...

and  you know, what? I really enjoyed it!

Yes, "breaking the wall" was unusual but I thought is was fun to hear Anne Elliot's ramblings and thoughts directly to the audience, it is very much a modern style of movie in that sense, plus all the discussions of her sister "being an empath" and "narcissistic" - language that possibly didn't exist back then, haha!

Good to see diversity in the casting, too.

If you approach it as a movie based on current times & sentiments rather than a pure period piece, just sit back and enjoy the fun moments and side-eye. A thumbs-up from me!

Not a movie, but a series on Netflix - Pieces of Her. I saw that it starred Toni Collette and she's one of my favorite actors ever and I'll watch anything she's in. It was really good. Very interesting and keeps you guessing. I hope they'll make a second season but seeing as it's Netflix, you never know. Spiderman 2. It still holds up to this day! Definitely in my top 3 favorite Spiderman films along with No Way Home and Into the Spiderverse. I love seeing Toby's performances as Peter Parker and Doc Oc is a really fun villain. Overall still an exciting and fun movie!

@Rainlove The Pegasus - I think I have a secret obsession with that film too! It's so colorful and the characters are so positive and endearing, and that finale is the best part. I read a review that Sing 2 is a phenomenal Las Vegas stage performance trapped in a mediocre film plot, and that seems kinda accurate. Either way, the ending is delicious candy for the eyes!

Inception - easily a 10/10. I'd (somehow) never seen it before, and my housemate is a huge fan, so we sat down and watched it together before they went off on holiday. Very good film, I'd highly recommend!

"The Prince and the Pauper" with the Sprouse twins in it. I'd been curious about watching it for years but just never was able to. I finally found it thrifting and got to watch it. Other than the family friend bribing the cops and the insanely long pointless intro, I kind of liked it! Maybe just because I miss seeing them in their Suite Life shows. Maybe a 5 or 6 out of 10, for being not too impressive but not a complete waste of time? (SPOILER) The plot twist with the family friend was absolutely predictable.

The Menu (2022)
Black humor, a nice hint of horror and thriller. Perfect movie for me!  :iconclap: The characters were interesting, especially the chef played by Ralph Fiennes (he is one of my favorite actors, has been since I was a teenager).
I also really liked the music in the movie. The color scheme and landscapes of the film, as well as the close-ups of the food, were like art. :wow: Beautiful and fascinating. I'm not a fan of fine dining restaurants, and I'm not a fan of their food, but in this movie they were interesting.
I only wish the movie was a little longer.

NoES 4: The Dream Master-A little cheesier then childhood me remembers, but the kills are still pretty creative,  and it is still a fine entry in the series. Great soundtrack too. 7/10

Friday the 13th 2009-All I gotta say is, it was a Friday the 13th film. It ticked off all the checkmarks, and it'll blend together with the rest of them in my memory at some point. Did a great job playing Jason though. 5/10

Warning, the movie is extremely bloody and raw, especially towards the end of the movie. I give it 9.5, knocking off half a point since I wasn't a big fan of the art shift in the action sequences (I found it distracting/a bit uncanny valley at times). The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (74) First time watching any of these films. It was grimy, uncomfortable, and made some weird noises. Two of the people she was with were idiots. I did kind of crack up, when the well meaning truck driver decided to get out of there after Leatherface stood back up from cutting into his own leg. I don't understand why he did some kind of bizarro dance with his chainsaw in the middle of the street? It was a good film. The camera work was excellent.  7/10

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite horror movies!
I also like a few other movies related to this, which were made later (some even in the 2000s), but nothing beats the first original, of course. I still get chills down my spine even though I've seen it many times. I love those creepy sounds.
Maybe his "dance" is raging madness when his prey manages to escape.  :wonder:

---
I watched the horror drama Shepherd (2021) and liked it very much.
The film had beauty (barren landscapes, freezing air, hills, stormy sea, thunder), sadness (death, loss, loneliness, cold color scheme), horror (unknown mystical and terrifying threat, the dead) and brutality (blood, corpses... i.e. the animals lose their lives as the film approaches the end, I don't recommend that scene for sensitive people!)

Arctic (2018) A great survival drama with amazing scenery!

The polar bear attack was well done, just as if it really happened in nature, i.e. not the kind of Hollywood thing where the giant monster bear doesn't give up at all or doesn't die no matter how you fight against it! During this movie I felt a little sad myself and almost out loud I tried to tell the characters of the movie not to give up yet, you will survive!

Skinamarink-I did like it. The uses of dark shadowy places, grainy old looking footage, and moments of quiet dread made for a perfect eerie atmosphere. The crackle-pop of film enhanced it. The kids sound adorable and are very sweet to each other.

Personal observations are:
It has a youtube analog horror feel of sorts.

Maybe I'm just dense, but I didn't quite understand it.

My gripes:

The special effects for the reappearing/disappearing objects was hokey.

It dragged on way too long and seemed a tad repetitive at parts.

Attention filmmakers of all experiences; Yes we expect jump scares, but loud obnoxious noises in a quiet environment does not make a good scare tactic. It hurts people's ears, irritates them, and takes them out of the immersion all at once. It's the equivalent of blowing an air horn next to your sleeping friend as a prank.

I’m a little late, but I’m going to see if I can get in my Academy Award best picture thoughts before the winner is announced tonight! The local theatre by me always does a best picture fest where you can see all the best picture nominees for a fairly low price. Spoiler, I think I might not be as smart as I want to be when it comes to movies. A lot of the nominees that people are raving about I just straight up did not get. :P I’ll rank them from my personal best to worst.

1.) Everything Everywhere All At Once: EVERYTHING/10.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCH! This one absolutely deserves all the hype it has been getting. For a movies that is so chaotic and so silly at times it is manages to stay on track and tell a really fun story with a lot of profound messages. With so many “artsy” movies exploring the darker parts of humanity, it was so refreshing to see a movie highlight the importance of love, kindness, and forgiveness.

2.) The Fablemans: 10/10
Really solid movie all around! This one is loosely based on the life of Steven Spielberg and his path into becoming a moviemaker. He lived briefly in Phoenix during his childhood, so I really enjoyed the parts where they portrayed my home city on screen. I also really dug all the mid century vibes throughout the movie!

3.) Top Gun: 10/10
Okay this one surprised me. I went into it wanting to hate it, but I genuinely loved it. It was a fair.y simple story, but it was told well and the characters were all likeable. I think it did so well because it is a reminder of what blockbusters used to be. Even if they are not super high concept, it is nice to see movies that are clearly crafted with a ton of love!

4.) Women Talking: 9/10
I really liked this slower, dialogue driven movie! They did a great job telling this story without a lot of action or changing scenes. In some ways this reminded me more of a stage play than a movie.

5. All Quiet on the Western Front: 9/10
This one was disturbing, depressing, and something I’d never want to see again. BUT seeing as it was an anti-war movie there was no other way it should be. It was imo, very effective at showing the horrors of war and the senseless loss of life for pointless battles. I’ve never seen the original or read the book, I guess some scenes were omitted from this version that hurt the message a little, but overall it was still a very good film. I think this one should win best score, the score really heightened the unsettling elements of this film as well.

6.) Triangle of Sadness: 7/10
This was a fun movie that had a lot of really good ideas and messages that just were not as well executed as they could have been. The movie could have been a lot shorter imo and should have had a better ending. I HATED the ending, it left so many loose ends open! Regardless, I mostly enjoyed it so it r@no’s fairly high still.

7.) Elvis: 7/10
This one was very just okay to me. It was enjoyable, but I don’t really get the weird musical biopic films that are popular right now. I’d rather just watch a documentary on their lives. Austin Butler gave a great performance of Elvis though!

8.) Banshees of Inshieren: 3/10
Okay so this one is getting ALL the love but I did not get it. I know it’s supposed to be based on the Irish Civil War and what not, which I’m admittedly not super educated in, but the story on its own is just depressing an bizarre. The conflict between the two main characters is stupid extreme and the ending is not satisfying. This one ranks here vs last only because it is short and with it being based on a real life tragedy, it makes sense for it to have a bleak ending I guess.

9. Avatar, The Way of Water: 2/10
I almost forgot this one was nominated LOL. I was going to put this as 8, but since I forgot it I’ll leave it here. I didn’t really get the first movie, and I didn’t like this one either. Sure it’s visually stunning, but for what? There is nothing going on lol! I would have ranked this one higher if it was shorter, but by about hour 2, I was nearly on the verge of tears from boredom. The entire last hour and a half is just a bunch of fighting. I personally don’t care for long fight scenes so this was like torture for me.

10. Tar: 2/10
Another one that is getting love that I just despised. I was into it in the first half, I thought the discussions around conducting and classical music were interesting. But by the second half I was bored. The main character is accused of grooming and an abusing young women, however the film never really takes a position on this one way or another. With the abuse of power and separating the art from the artist being such relevant issues right now, it felt lazy. The ending on this was also just plain bizarre and unsatisfying.

That’s my quick run down! I probably missed some thought and what not, but there it is!

Ooh, nice reviews! I still haven't seen Everything Everywhere. I really want to though!

I watched Mandy because my friends were telling me to. Saying it was so trippy and weird I would really like it. All I can say is that I think it's TOO trippy and weird. I felt it dragged a lot. The story was okay, the visuals were very interesting and I probably would have liked it more if it moved at a better pace. Meh. 4/10

After that I had to cleanse my palate so I watched The Burbs  It's been a long time since I've seen that one and it's still hilarious 8/10

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 7/10★
Cute and creative, yet strange little documentary-style movie. I didn’t expect to be rooting so hard for a seashell.

Everything Everywhere All At Once 6/10★
It had a good message, and although I thoroughly enjoyed some parts (the fanny pack scene :haha:), I felt it was too long and ridiculous at times (the IRS lady’s “awards”?). Personally, I would not watch it again.

Bryan Cranston plays a retiree turned lotto-player. It seemed like a movie that belongs on the Hallmark channel, so I recommend it if you’re in the mood for a wholesome story.

Man. I love Peele's stuff and I want to love this movie too. It has some great things in it (like the lead actress is amazing) and the story is interesting but there are so many plot holes :yikes: This isn't the first time I've watched it, this is like the third or fourth time. I always think it's going to be better but it never is.

One Hour Photo (2002)
An interesting, slightly exciting and sad film. I felt sad maybe because of the lead actor, Robin Williams did a great job as a sad lonely character (Sy). It felt so real. (I am still very sad that the world lost one of the best actors way too early.) :(
The music for the "terrifying" final scene is really great and adds to the suspenseful atmosphere.
I would have just hoped for something more at the end of the film, for example, how Sy's life continues..But the film is supposed to remain open-ended and the viewer can decide the ending in their mind.

9/10 :green:

Secrets of the Elephants. Not a movie but a short series. 11/10

I've spent my entire life learning about nature and animals and this series had brand new stuff I've never seen before. Like, brand new since the Planet Earth documentaries came out. It's about elephant culture and how they differ in different parts of the world, yet they all share some of the same things too - just like people. It's a bit sad though, but then what documentary about nature isn't?

Renfield-It was pretty good. I was expecting it to be a comedy, but Cage was a very convincing manipulative jerk. The guy who played Renfield was fantastic, the bullet time wasn't too intrusive, and everything wrapped up nicely enough. I liked it, I also never say that about vampire movies, but this wasn't focused on vamps. It was focused on Renfield and is the second vamp movie I'd willingly watch more than once. 7/10

Blair Witch (2016)

I saw that movie on TV today. I really liked it, although it's not as creepy as the first one (The Blair Witch Project from 1999) is. This is a really good sequel. :ohyeah:
I would have liked more scenes shot during the day and even more of those scary crashes, screams, etc. sounds that could be heard from the forest in the first movie as well. There were those voices in this film too, but too little in my opinion.

I hope that someday this will come to a streaming service somewhere or I will buy this on DVD someday, because this movie needs to be enjoyed without commercials. Then scaring it will surely work even better.

I finally watched two movies I bought sight unseen.

Knock at the Cabin - I'm an unashamed Shyamalan fan and usually like his movies very much. I know this one was based on someone else's book. It wasn't as "Shyamalan-esque" as most of his movies and I figured out what was going on with the characters pretty early. It was really good though. As a wrestling fan I was impressed with Batista. I like the movies he makes much more than say The Rock or Cena. He was great in this role. 8/10

Nope - Man, I bought this so long ago and only just got around to watching it. It was awesome! I'm a huge Jordan Peele fan and have loved everything he's made so far (and loved him on Key & Peele). I knew there had to be more going on than the obvious, I was right. It's a fantastic movie. 10/10

Z Wants to Play-This movie did what a modern horror movie hasn't done in a long time, creep me out. My one gripe is that the painting of the demon/ghost looked creepier then the few times it was actually onscreen. It just looks goofy.

I spent the weekend to rewatch the original Indiana Jones trilogy on DVD.

Raiders of the Lost Ark-9/10, a classic, although problematic in places and some parts haven't aged well
Temple of Doom-6/10, very gory/grimdark for an Indy movie; definitely glad I didn't see it as a kid; the character of Willie Scott was beyond annoying too
Last Crusade-10/10, an excellent film and it holds up very well by today's standards too (especially on rewatch as an adult)

I'm looking forward to Indy 5 :)

Mid 90s 6/10★
It felt somewhat nostalgic, but the homophobia and underage substance abuse felt disconcerting. I know it’s inspired by Jonah Hill’s childhood, so those were some harsh realities of the time. Basically a slice of life with no real resolution.

Oppenheimer.
The music and sound (and lack of sound) was great.
The photo was beautiful.
It was too long (3 hours).
Three different storylines intertwined, one of them in black and white. Even I had trouble following sometimes and I ususally never have that kind of problem.

Apparently the movie was boring enough that several people started to look into their phones, destroying the feel for the rest of the movie.

Barbie!  8/10
It was maybe a bit too long though.

Admittedly, I wasn't expecting much; I went in just for the pink and oversized toy models :D
But the story pleasantly surprised me.

Here's my takeaway from it (I posted this on a youtube video somewhere, so it's just a copy/paste from my comment) :

The evolution of Barbie in this story is representing the growth from child to young adult; from kiddies who don't question the obvious lack of logics in the pink perfect world (no stairs? no problem!), to asking questions about reality and beginning to think critically (Sasha calling Barbie a fascist - using a word she picked up somewhere without really understanding its meaning), to leaving behind childhood and stepping into adulthood (represented by Barbie's last move and line in the movie).

Of course some said it's not that deep, but it sure has a lot of layers one can play around with. Pun intended.

The original Jurassic Park 10/10

It's been years since I've watched this one. I forgot how good it was. It's so exciting and the dinos still look amazing (the best part of using practical effects rather than CGI). I also like how they acted more like... well, big lizards. In the newer ones the dinos are anthropomorphized a lot. I know they are supposed to be super smart, but there's something more scary about something that will eat you unless you distract it with a flare

I don’t know, it was just so lackluster for me. It was nice that the community got together at the end, but eh… Plus, there’s a black face scene. I couldn’t even finish it. Jack Nicholson’s character was wayyyy too creepy! I don’t know if it gets better, but I bowed out.

Talk to Me - 8/10

Everyone hyped this movie for me telling me it was awesome. It was pretty good, some very gruesome things in it. The story was interesting, I liked the actors. It left a big plot hole which is why I deducted stars. Overall, if you like horror flicks it's a good one. I wouldn't buy it though.

It was okay. I always watch stuff with subtitles and they got annoying because it was always [gasps] [breathes heavily] and [creature chattering] The aliens were interesting, especially long leggy. I was confused by the ending though. Spoiler, for spoilers.

Spoiler
So was she the only human left? And the rest of the town was aliens in human costumes? And they were all like her? The woman she was dancing with, was that supposed to be Maude? I'm so confused

The Black Phone - 9/10

I love Ethan Hawk, I think he's a fantastic actor. He likes to play weird roles in interesting movies. He was great in this. Everyone was. It wasn't as dark and creepy as I thought it would be but it was really good.

eta: After I watched it I thought it reminded me a lot of Stephen Kings The Body and The Long Walk, as far as the characters and their relationships go. Come to find out, The Black Phone was written by Joe Hill - Stephen King's son!

The Meg 2. 4/10 It began so well, I really liked it.. and then the last 40 minutes they just threw in everything they could, including the worst acting ever.. it just..became a show that starts with an s. It dived from a well done B action to Z.

No one will save you (2023)
I was looking forward to this movie. What a disappointment that was. -_- This movie didn't give me any fear or chills, but rather a little laugh and yawn. This would have been really creepy if it had been made in, say, the 80s. There were really beautiful landscapes, scenes, colors and great music in the movie. Alien's voices were great, but there was nothing else great about them. I just don't like that everything is easily done on computers/digitally. :pout: The ending made me a little confused too. :wonder:

The Boogeyman (2023)

This movie was pretty good. Entertaining, a few good scary scenes, the plot was ok and even the evil creature was done ok, (it was good that it wasn't brought into the light too much but stayed in the dark most of the time) I loved the eyes that sparkled in the dark (they bring back memories of my childhood when I was afraid of the dark and saw something in the dark that I still can't explain ). In my opinion, the film was the kind of basic horror film that is really nice to watch, for example, just in time for Halloween. It still lacked something.. Maybe more something frightening and startling. :wonder:

Spoiler
Like where did they get the jumpsuits and scissors? Why was she the only one who took a dance class out of everybody that was in the tunnels? Surely another kid on the surface would have had dance. And I realize they were switched, which is why she didn't talk, but why did the tethered take so long to realize they had free will? And what's up with the rabbits? WISH !!   8.5/10

What a delightful movie, despite it being a bit uneven storywise. Such a wonderful nod to all the disney movies that came before, from the opening to the runtime! So many easter eggs. The music is amazing imo; with "Welcome to Rosas" and "The Wish" being my favorites.

Opinions on the animation style vary, but I liked it a lot. It was supposed to blend the current 3D trend and the handdrawn animation from times gone by, and for me, it worked.

The symbolism behind the wishes could have been explained a little more in depth, but I'm sure a lot of people will get the message.

Talk about a corny slasher film. The sloth is cute, and I got a few genuine laughs out of it, but some of it was just so cringy. It’s about what I expected.

Four Christmases 4/10★
I just didn’t know what to make of this movie. It wasn’t the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen, but it wasn’t very good either. The resolution was strange. And I hate when movies have the ex-fat-camper trope. It’s always “how embarrassing that you used to be fat and you went to fat camp!” like they should be ashamed. Plus this one had the “your former bestie was a lesbian and you didn’t even know it” backstory like she should be embarrassed, and it’s like whyyyy.  :nope:

War of the Worlds (2006? 7? the one with Tom Cruise) 8/10

Ugh, I have such a love/hate relationship with this movie. I've seen it before lots of times, but I haven't seen it in a couple years. I love the Tripods, I think they are totally cool and make the best sounds. I love the Tim Robbins part. Dakota Fanning is awesome as always. Cruise is okay in this. But it's a movie full of lies! And it drives me absolutely crazy. Rule #1 of writing fiction is you can't lie to your audience. You can have aliens, monsters, magic, any crazy thing you can of - but don't lie. If an airplane crashes on your house, there is not going to be a debris free trail you can drive on. If it takes a simple thing to fix a car, you are not going to be the only person with a working car. If you live in Chicago, you are not going to be the only person with a gun. Ugh!

I was having a hard time deciding who the audience was. You would think CLEARLY kids, but IDK, it was kinda strange to me. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed a few times. But the old lizard was giving weird advice once in awhile. I was glad when the little girl corrected him that it’s healthy to cry. I thought the biggest moral to the story is not to give advice when you don’t know what you’re talking about. My 8-year-old nephew literally asked if a teacher can take kids some place other than where the field trip is supposed to be. All the adults in the room were like NO! Eesh.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is one I've been meaning to tick off my Ghibli list. The artwork is quite different, but charming and simple. Like something out of a child 's storybook. The music was lovely, especially the main song that got a little longer each time. 6.5/10

Christmas as Usual 5/10★ (Lady brings Indian boyfriend back home to Norway and you watch the mess that ensues.)
How the Gringo Stole Christmas 5/10★ (Basically the same movie but the boyfriend is white trying to fit into a Mexican family.)
The Muppet Christmas Carol 9/10★ (One point docked because I just kept thinking of how this is a pipe dream. We wish Scrooges would grow a conscience, but they never do!)
The Boy and the Heron 6/10★ (I love Studio Ghibli films, and it wasn’t bad… It just wasn’t quite my style.)
Leave The World Behind 7/10★ (I would rate it higher if the ending had more…resolve?)

So this weekend I've watched

BBCs Christmas Carol from 2019 with Guy Pearce. It's a series but Disney had cut it to one film which was appreciated. 7/10 A bit more spooky but they made up some of their own storylines which I didn't really like.
Mickeys Christmas Carol from 1983 10/10
A Christmas Carol from 1999 with Patrick Stewart. 10/10 it's the one that follows the book the best. But they do have the ugliest of the ghost of christmas to come.
A Christmas Carol from 1984 with George C Scott which is my favorite. Can't have a christmas season without it. 11/10.

Disney also have the animated version with Jim Carey. I've not seen it because of Jim Carey but am thinking of giving it a go anyway. Is it any good?
I also have the Smurfs and Barbis Christmas Carol on DVD and am thinking of maybe watching those. Didn't watch them last year.

Barbie (The Movie)-2023-8/10 stars, made me feel the existential dread in places I wasn't expecting, so lower than 10/10, but a good movie overall. I'd love to walk through the set pieces and take pics. Great costumes/choreography.

Barbie 7/10 it was fun, it had its points.. but one segment really pissed me off!

Spoiler
That scene when she held her creators hands and was gonna get an understanding of being human and every segment was about children. Life is NOT about children for everyone ffs!

I posted my opinion about the Barbie movie, a few pages back.  :)  I'm also posting it here since it's being talked about again.

Barbie 8/10

I really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure what to expect, but most of the movie was good.  There was one scene that felt like an extended beer commercial.  I also didn't like a couple of the jokes, but I think that's just me.

I watched Migration today.  I loved it.  My one complaint is I don’t understand the design of the parrot.  His beak is all goofed up, like the animators don’t know what a parrot is supposed to look like.

What I've watched the past couple of days:
Barbie's Perfect Christmas-7/10-Marking this down due to 3D animation being horrific lol, and the message was eh, perfectionism and making promises you can't keep are solved magically, though I'm expecting too much from a Barbie movie lol
A Very Minty Christmas-9/10-A sweet story with cute characters; I totally sympathize with Minty being a perfectionist
Dancing in the Clouds-8/10-Very cute story and characters--I was confused with the intro of one major character and why things were done the way they were plot-wise (probably explained in another episode? Otherwise major plothole)
Jingle All the Way-7/10-It doesn't hold up too well in today's world of movies; Phil Hartman's character was major ick and the Governator did alright--his banter with Sinbad made the movie work

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: the Movie from 1998. 8/10. Was a really cute movie and I hadn't seen it before. John Goodman voiced Santa in this one and he did not make any disparaging remarks to or about Rudolph which I found to be an improvement over the Rankin Bass one. Never liked that even Santa was kind of mean to Rudolph until the ending. Whoopi Goldberg voiced the winter sorceress and villain Stormella. Thought both her and John Goodman being in this was neat.

Let's see, what have I been watching over the last couple of days... most of these are short films, not feature-length, but w/e counting them anyway

Mog's Christmas - Can't believe it's taken THIS long for Mog to be animated! (Unless you count the Sainsbury's ad from a few years ago - which was also amazing) Ahhh this was so sweet and lovely, I rewatched it again today and now the song from it's in my head xD I love Mog even if the last book broke my heart. I wish that beautiful traditional British animation like this wasn't just relegated to Christmas now... Anyway, I loved it ^^

Tabby McTat - BBC's Christmas special. Wasn't sure what to anticipate from this one since I've never read the original book or seen any of the other Julia Donaldson adaptations, but I like kitties and it looked cute, so I figured I might as well give it a go. OMG it was so lovely and wonderful!! Two cute kitty specials, what a nice treat :kitty:

Guys and Dolls - I've never seen this film (I've seen bits and pieces but never sat down and properly watched it) but I saw the current production of it in London earlier in the month (starring the fabulous Cedric Neal and Mark Oxtoby - OMG you guys MUST go and see this if you have the chance to - it's amazing) and it made me really want to see the film at last! Then as luck would have it, it was on the TV recently, so we taped it and watched it on Christmas Day. It's not one of my favourite musicals, and something about much of the choreography just seemed sort of... stiff? to me? but it was a good film overall and I'd watch it again ^^ aahhh but it made me really want to see the show again!
(Also I must say, the ending of the film was much better than the show. Both end pretty abruptly but the show was just.. odd, it didn't quite come together. Not sure which one's more accurate to the original stage script - probably the show since I know they changed a lot for the film - but yeah...)

Stuart Little - oh I love this film! It's so sweet and fluffy. One of the few films that's much better than the original book (although it's been a loooong time since I read the book). I just don't like the credits sequence! The film ends on such a nice, heartwarming note and then the credits just have that awful manic wacky slapstick crap and all that Snowbell abuse (because omg it's so funny seeing the kitty getting thrown out of the window, amirite guys?!? Hahaha so funny!!!111 /sarcasm)... I don't get why they ended it like that, it's so out-of-tone from the rest of the film and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially since it comes RIGHT AFTER such a nice ending!  :stressed:

The Forgotten Toys: The Night After Christmas - One of the best short films EVER and one of my all-time favourites. I love this film (and the series that followed) so much :lovey: And ohhhh the gorgeous painted backgrounds!!!

Wonka: 6/10. It was a sweet feel good movie….which was also kind of my problem with it haha! I’m used to Willy Wonka stories having a bit of a dark undertone and this one was just a little TOO sweet and silly imo. I also had no idea it was a musical going into it, so I had a difficult time getting over that. The visuals were fun though and the connection between Wonka and Noodle was cute.

Leaving the World Behind: 8/10. I really liked this movie! Despite its long run time it held my attention the whole way through and I felt like it had an interesting and relevant theme to today’s world. I always like movies that highlight that in disasters you need to rely on other people, not turn against them.

Elf: It’s a yearly rewatch, but 10/10. Seriously it’s a perfectly crafted story imo, it’s a fun watch every single year!

Jurassic World 6/10. The velociraptors went from scary monsters to puppies in this one. It's the biggest downer in the movie.. and that the female lead ran around in heels. It was saved by the T-Rex! The Rex on the top of the building shouting to the world saved the movie.

Rebel Moon 6/10. The first half was really good. But then it kind of lost it. It had some really cool scenes and characters, but I don't really get the point. And it was very predictable.
Spoiler
I sat there for an hour waiting for the obvious betrayal.

Forgot to mention another film I've rewatched recently -

Goodnight Mister Tom - Very good adaptation of a brilliant book, I just wish it was a little bit longer. They cut a LOT of stuff from the book, most of the cuts make sense since it was a TV film and you can only fit in so much, I just feel like it needed to be maybe 5 minutes longer. Some of the scenes just needed a little more time to "breathe", if that makes sense. Otherwise a very true-to-the-book adaptation and well worth a watch (though as a warning, it does deal with child abuse, so be mindful of that).

Back to the Future - Caught this on Sky Showcase today and couldn't resist <3 One of my favourite films, what more is there to say! Pure cinematic perfection.

Super Mario Brothers Movie  8/10

Overall it was a fun movie even if it seemed a little bit disjointed to me in spots. For example there'd be a scene with Mario and Princess Peach and then a jump to what's happening to Luigi.  Then back to Mario and Peach.  I loved seeing the different game environments incorporated in to the movie.

Spoiler
I couldn't stand that blue star though.  I think it was supposed to be one of Rosalina's Luma but it talks constantly about dying and death while it's locked in a cage suspended over a lava pit with the other prisoners (penguins, Luigi Cranky Kong etc..)  I'm guessing it was supposed to be funny, but it felt really out of place especially in a movie that's marketed to kids.

Also, if felt like the ending of the movie seemed a bit rushed.  I expected more from the foreshadowing earlier and Peach's backstory seemed to not go anywhere.

I watched the semi new Netflix movie "Leave the world behind" and I was somewhat disappointed.
To me it was very boring, plot was very, could I say, insignificant. To me no real storyline and just anticlimax to another

The last film I watched and really liked was the second Winx film! Winx Aventura Magica de (2010) I watched it on December 22nd!
I watched the film, and I can't wait for it to come out in Portuguese, although many people say that it is focused on Bloom, I disagree, Bloom stays in Domino, giving space to the other Winx, my opinion.
Other people say that the film has nothing to do with the 4th season, apart from the believix fact, they believe that the film is the continuation of the 1st film "Secret of the Lost Kingdom", I disagree, I think the Winx are in Alfea for some reason, perhaps for a festival, as we can see at the beginning of the film. If anyone saw the 4th season, they must have understood that the winx were on earth for a mission, and after completing the mission, they return to Magix, that's the which I think is based on the 2nd film.
Unfortunately Roxy didn't appear in the film, but if we take a good look, Nabu also didn't appear in the 1st film. The film does have a certain "connection" with the 4th season and even with the 1st film as well.
As the film is in Italian, I watched it with subtitles, so that's what I give this film an 8. I love Winx Club!

I don't often come on here as I'm the world's worst rater. I'm easy to please so if I hate something, everybody will lol!!!
But occasionally I get something which is very don't judge by the cover.
Case yesterday: Mamma Mia.
My thoughts on hearing about it: it's following Abba or something.
My thoughts after actually seeing it: that's quite clever actually!!!
What I mean is they picked a great story with plenty of fun, & had two rules: 1/ only songs by Abba, & 2/ they must fit the moments as well as they can. Example: friends comfort each other to Chiquitita, a woman bemoans her debt problems to Money, Money, Money, men recall the fun of their youth to Our Last Summer, etc...
My rating: 8/10. Cheesy, but in a good way.

The Boys in the Boat - Been waiting for this one for a good while now, one of my favourite theatre actors is in it (had fun trying to spot him, not sure I succeeded ^^; well he was in there somewhere, haha) and the trailer looked intriguing, so I decided to give it a go. It was really good!!! SO exciting too. It's about these college students in the 30s that join a boat team and compete to go to the Olympics and such. (Bad description, sorry ^^;) I was on the edge of my seat for all the race scenes!! It was REALLY gripping.

My one complaint is that I thought it ended a bit too abruptly, and some parts near the climax were a bit confusing/should've been explained a bit better (not sure how to explain it without spoiling anything - but basically it felt like we needed a bit of dialogue to bridge the two scenes together better, or even another scene). I guess they didn't want to beat us over the head with what was going on or resort to cliche dialogue etc? But it was a bit TOO subtle IMO.

But yeah aside from those small nitpicks, I loved it!! Definitely one I'd see again.

The movies i watched this past week.

Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 3-I always enjoy these films, and these are the best 2 in the franchise. They're pure adventure that sparks the imagination. Who doesn't love fictional pirates? 8/10

Peter Pan-Its still magical and fun, Hook,Smee and the crocodile still make me laugh. 6.5/10

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match-Hahaha it was a lot of fun! A leetle lighter on the gore then other MK films, but its Johnny in all his egotistically goofy glory. Well animated. Definitely reccomended.  7/10

Resident Evil. One of my favorites 8/10

Finally finnished Aquaman two! It's like they didn't even put any effort in it. The CGI was so bad, the fightingscenes and the humour.. bleergh... -5/10

M-It was alright. A bit slow and convoluted.  4.5/10
