Honestly, I can relate about fans thinking these are a bit strange in spirit. I also thought it was a bit ironic at first that Hasbro, a toy company first and foremost, is licensing out use of their characters, that basically came about in the first place to push signature line products, to a fellow toy/collectible company. The more I thought about it though, how are the Funko ponies much different than say, the G1 porcelains put out by Extra Special in the 80's?

they seem a bit similar to the molded fs-size colorable ponies- don't they?

On second thought- maybe more detailed- I do like them a lot :D

I am a bit surprised that the ebay "prototype" is more than $400 already-  it is possible it is a marketing prototype- but I don't see anything at all on the box or anywhere that indicates that it is anything different than the finished product.  Guess we will have to see when these things hit Hot Topic.  I hope they don't sell out instantly- :P

I completely get that and I do understand the argument that these are more "collectables" than toys and that people are delighted at them being released....buuuuuuuut....personally they are just [for me at least] too close in principle to what Hasbro as a toy company are creating. Funko and similar lines usually create collectables of lines which are almost completely licensed or create items which are not similar to the principle line but are essentially merch for a popular line - I know I love my Peanuts Funko bobble heads :). If they were doing bobble heads or key rings or something other than a simply moulded character then I would see it as merch but it just feels and looks really close to being a collectable toy for me...line that Rainbow Dash up next to the AJ and Pinkie from the initial FiM box release with moulded hair and you have a similar product.

I wish they wouldn't use that brony name for the yellow haired pegasus. Would it kill them to respect people who are offended by it? Can't people respect others anymore?
Hasbro had to have okayed that as a licensor. Even though I think it's taboo, there's a ton of money to be had with that moniker and I think it's a great way for Hasbro to make one without actually making it. Maybe they'll make pimp daddy destro next, lol.

I'm happy she's on her way though, maybe they can do a Ditzy chase version and hopefully ebay prices for the sdcc version will come down from $100+.

I can't wait to see these in stores. I would like to have Rainbow Dash and :muffin: Pony and I have a friend that would love to have Vinyl Scratch that doesn't have her glasses just painted on.

Yeah- I have no problem with Hasbro selling the license to fantastic toy manufacturers- these look great and I bet Hasbro is cleaning up profit-wise.  I find it odd that people have a problem with the fact that Hasbro isn't making these- there are many dozens of licensees for MLP products- and have been since the 80s (ie the plushies, various school items/clothing/odd figures/collectible figures ie porcelain)

Really, the more profitable the MLP franchise is, the more likely it will stick around and we will get new stuff :D
