Pony Corral / Re: G4 Head and Body Mismatch
« on: April 04, 2022, 03:05:29 PM »
Yeah, I asked about Feathermay a few years ago and was told that she was sold with the head/body mismatch :( I dunno what's up with it, it's a real shame, especially considering it hits unique characters like her the hardest. I expect to see these problems down the line esp. with older toys like G1s, but head/body mismatch fresh out of the package is just awful...

It does seem to hit the more original designs more which stinks because G4 doesn't have a ton of unique designs, especially compared to other gens (which is, unfortunately, a side effect of having such a strong main cast of characters). I honestly think it is the worst on Feathermay which is really sad because she's probably my second or third fav original design this gen.

It is indeed because different types of plastic were used for the head versus the body.  Hasbro tried to color-match them but it's imperfect, especially for the first wave of G4s.

I don't know the exact reason why . . . maybe easier or cheaper to manufacture the body like that?  Their process was definitely different compared to G1s and G3s, as you can see "seam lines" on the bodies of G4s around the chest area.  Whereas the G4 heads do seem like traditional vinyl heads.  You can feel the difference, their bodies are more rubbery compared to the heads.

I think this changed on the post-movie G4 ponies, to me they feel like both head + body are made of the same material, and also they don't seem to have any mismatch.

I do agree with the massive change between G4 and other gen's production styles. I would've rather had rock hard pony bodies than a rubbery body that's a whole entirely different shade of purple than the head  It's just such an odd decision, especially since it's not like the discoloration happened a couple of years after they were released, it was immediate! My only guess is that maybe somehow it was cheaper??

Pony Corral / G4 Head and Body Mismatch
« on: April 03, 2022, 09:11:53 PM »
Hello! I'm sure most people who collect G4 know about the severe head and body-color mismatch present in some ponies. I don't have the majority of my collection with me right now, but I do have my forelock Twilight which came with the hot air balloon. Ever since I got her NIB when she first came out all those years ago, she's always had AWFUL head and body mismatch. Other ponies, especially in the similar purple-ish color as Twilight, seem to have this bad color discrepancy too (an example I can think of off the top of my head is Feathermay).
I've always found this phenomenon weird as to my knowledge (at least in my own experience) these ponies CAME with different colors. Most other generations will always have ponies who are more prone to mismatch than others, but they have never come with the differences? It's always developed over time whether it be from exposure to sunlight, improper packing, the materials in the plastic breaking down, or just age. The point is, for other generations it took TIME for their colors to be different as opposed to g4 ponies who would just come looking different...
I know obviously, the answer would be different types of plastics used for the head and body, which makes sense as they feel like different materials but like...why? I don't see the point in using two different materials for the body and head. If they used the different material for the head for something maybe like rooting issues, why not use it for the body? And Vice Versa. If anyone has a theory for why this is the case, let me know. I think this is especially jarring as later releases of these ponies didn't have the massive color difference (at least if I remember correctly. I have two different versions of "Princess Twilight", one with the standard pegasus body and unicorn head and the other with the Luna/Cadence body, and neither have a mismatch and if they do ((which I don't recall either having)) it's not NEARLY as bad as my forelock Twilight).
It does make buying ponies secondhand a little frustrating as ponies like Feathermay have such beautiful designs, but the mismatch is SO distracting. I'd take matters into my own hands and fix it myself if they weren't so sought after. After a while I get used to it, however, whenever I get back into my MLP G4 phase (like right now), it always surprises me with how bad it can get. qwq

Pony Corral / Re: NEED HELP: removing perfumes & artifical fragrances?
« on: December 06, 2021, 03:03:26 PM »
Like others have suggested, I'd advise kitty litter! It worked really well for a couple ponies I had with weird scents lol.

Also if you want to get into MLP, idk if gen 1 is for you if you're warry of scents. I'm someone who gets migraines from strong smells so I understand being a little apprehensive of smells. The general thing I've noticed with G1 ponies is that they typically will always smell like something. It's just kind of the way the plastic they were made with is? Like, I've seen descriptions of the scent vary a little between collectors, but the smell I'd describe it as is like a sweet scent with a bit of a spicy nip to the end if that makes sense? At least in my opinion that's how it smells.

Anyway, the point is I'm not sure if gen 1 would be the best for you to collect? Obviously, not all ponies will smell EXACTLY the same, however in my experience, all of my ponies have SOME scent. Whether that be a sweet scent, a smokier (but not cigarette) scent, a teakwood/cologne scent, or even just a strong plastic-ish scent. Depending on how I'm feeling that day, I have to be careful how much I handle the pony because the smell can sometimes transfer onto my hands! LOL

If you like the look of g1 I'd suggest the re-issues that are coming out by Basic Fun, even if they are a little hard to come by at the moment. Other than that I've noticed g2 ponies do not tend to have a scent at all, same with g3. G4-g5ish can be more hit or miss. A lot of my late-line G4-G4.5 ponies reek of a horrible plastic smell that makes it hard for me to even be around them.

Anyway I hope this helps. Good luck with scent removal!

The Dollhouse / Generation Girl Dolls First Edition Varients
« on: December 05, 2021, 09:54:27 PM »
Hiya!

I want to get into collecting Generation Girl dolls. Of course, the original release of the first editions of the dolls had different features that got changed with re-releases because of parents complaining. The only ones I know of are:

In Barbie's original release... she had a heart tattoo on her ankle.

In Tori/Susie/Vicky's original release... she had 3 piercings on her ears.

In Chelsie's original release... she had a nose piercing.

As far as I know, these are the only dolls with these changes between first and second releases. If anyone knows of any other dolls with differences, please let me know! If there are no differences between first and second releases (for example, if Nichelle doesn't have any removed piercings, tattoos, etc., then I don't care what varient I get). I would like to know because sometimes the OG first edition dolls can be a little more pricy NIB because of the fact that they were "replaced", and if I could save a little money that would be really cool :)

The information I get about variants are from the generation girls fandom website and from trying to compare NIB releases. I was watching a video about Generation Girl, however, I haven't gotten to rewatch it to see if they list all the changes.

ANYWAY, if someone can help me out, that would be great :D

The Dollhouse / Re: Sailor Moon Irwin Dolls - Saturn
« on: November 27, 2021, 10:43:56 PM »
I don't know about "only 100" - that sounds like fan conjecture to me, honestly (kinda like how some pony sites back in the day said "less Mimics were produced than the other TEs" and there's nothing to indicate that's actually true). But IIRC the Irwin Saturn that was produced (I know there are some prototypes - one with purple hair, one in the "noseless" face mold - that didn't go into full production BUT I think one or two did make it into collector hands) is very rare, yeah. I want to say she was one of the last toys Irwin made so she wasn't distributed as widely as their earlier dolls?

Sorry for the late reply, I have been away from my computer for a couple days  ^^;

I figured her being one of the last released was the case as that would explain why she's way more uncommon than the other girls. It's good to know there's (hopefully) not only just 100 floating around. I figured it was a small number than the other dolls but not 100  Thanks for replying and letting me know. My Sailor Moon merchandise knowledge in general is fairly limited, especially with the Irwin dolls so this really helped me. Thanks again!

The Dollhouse / Sailor Moon Irwin Dolls - Saturn
« on: November 22, 2021, 05:02:38 PM »
I'm not super familiar with the Irwin Sailor Moon dolls, and I'm trying to just get the basics down of the inner senshi (Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars) before I move onto the (very) expensive outer senshi.

I have always known that any merch of Saturn is going to be almost always way more expensive than the other senshi, and of course I knew her doll especially was going to be an arm and a leg. However, I recently found a listing for her and out of sheer curiosity I clicked on it and the seller claimed there are only 100 known Irwin Sailor Saturn dolls in existence. Is this true? I'm not saying they're a liar or anything, I'm just genuinely curious if there are only 100 Saturns in known existence.

If you can help me out with any information that would be appreciated! :)

Battle of the fruits part one:
Applejack (would've been Cherry Treats if she didn't fade to that off-white so easily :( )

Battle of the fruits part two:
Scrumptious

Battle of the fruits part three:
Blueberry Baskets

Battle of the fruits part four:
Strawberry Surprise

Battle of the candies part one:
Sweet Tooth (although I don't particularly care for either one...)

Battle of the candies part two:

Lemon Treats (although I don't really care for either once again  >_< )

Battle of the ice cream cones:
Lickity Split

Battle of the ice cream treats:
Fizzy

Battle of the Gingerbread men:
This one was hard! Although I love love love Gingerbread's color scheme, I can't get over the fact of how easily she discolors/hardens. I'm not as in love with Molasses, however she doesn't have as many problems as Gingerbread plus I like her gingerbread cutie mark more...In the end I think I'll go with Gingerbread, especially since she's going to be reproduced soon so I can get one who is white and still squishy!  :P

Battle of the Salty Snacks:
Another hard one! I'm gonna have to go with Twist though as her deep purple is gorgeous

Battle of the Dogs:
Squeezer

Battle of the cats:
Pink Dreams (although they're both gorgeous...can you tell I'm a cat person?  :satisfied: )

Battle of the bunnies:
Hippity Hop (i really like both their color schemes tho)

Battle of the ducks:
Quackers, hands down

Battle of the butterflies:
Flutterbye I guess...I just don't care for either and I can't find anything I like about either...Flutterbye barely won just because yellow is my least favorite color

Battle of the tropical fish:
Angel (although Sea Breeze looks more tropical!  )

Battle of the tropical birds:
Oddly enough you'd think this one would be easy for me given my icon and Mimic being my favorite pony ever, however Tropical Breeze is my favorite flutter pony ever and has one of my favorite animals as her cutie mark  I'm picking Mimic as the winner though simply just because Tropical Breeze can discolor to that ugly navy-ish color

Battle of the seashells:
Seashell

Battle of the gardeners:
Trickles only if her cutie mark was in pristine condition :)

Battle of the palm trees:
Pina Colada

Battle of the clouds:
Cloud Puff

Battle of Buttons (Literally):
I like both but probably SS buttons

Battle of the beach balls:
Beach Ball

Battle of schoolyard games:

Pony Corral / Re: My six favorite Twinkle Eye ponies

5. Bright Eyes I'm just a sucker for year 5 TE ponies aren't I? I tend to like weird ponies, no matter if it's just a weird color, weird theme, or weird gimmick (I mean, that one mommy pony who shoots out the two baby ponies is one of my grails) I just love weird ponies. Something unique to set them apart! Bright Eyes is so cool to me because her theme makes absolutely no sense to me. Her name is Bright Eyes but her symbol is clock? What? It's really amusing to me. I also love the contrast of her hair colors versus her body. The soft baby blue with the bold reds, coppers, golds, and whites? Amazing! Overall a well designed pony and a recent fav of mine. I also just love her pose, probably my favorite earth pony pose.

My guess is that the alarm clock symbol is to symbolize she's ready to rise and shine in the morning with "bright eyes". I didn't have Bright Eyes in my top 6 (er, or in my top 10), but I've really come around to her the more I look at pics of her. She really is quite a beautiful pony. But all the twinkle eyes are so pretty...their color combinations are just the best!

Ahhh that makes more sense. In that case, her color scheme also looks the sky in the morning when the sun is rising? Maybe a bit of a stretch but if it was intentional just another reason to love her and TE as a whole even more   :lovey:

Now this is my topic! TE ponies are my favorite due to the lore around them and they're the only set I want to 100% complete (besides the first set of the princess ponies)

1. Mimic Of course she'd be my favorite, haha. She's the pony that got me into MLP due to being a "childhood" pony of sorts. I never had her in the flesh (or plastic?), but she was the star of one of the episodes on my MLP DVD I had. I've always loved Mimic's specific lore about being a descendent of the first unicorn. Ever since I was little I've always wanted her, heck, I didn't even think she existed for years! Of course, it would be my luck that the one pony I must absolutely have is highly sought after  >_< To throw insult to injury she also is in my favorite pose of all time.  I'll have a Mimic one day, even if I somehow stop loving ponies forever I will NEVER stop my quest for Mimic!!!

2. Locket From the second I saw Locket while researching TE ponies I knew I wanted her. She's named after one of my favorite types of jewelry! Plus her color scheme is gorgeous and she's a pegasus (my favorite pony type)! I remember I let a near mint Locket slip away for $25 a couple years ago and I've never forgiven myself. I feel like she's just an underrated pony and generally looked over as "just another pink pony", and maybe she is for some people. But for me, Locket is very important to me. I've almost grown a weird bond with her over the years, much like with Mimic.

3. Quackers Originally I never thought much of Quackers. I mean, of course I thought she was gorgeous but white ponies just aren't my thing. The prone-to-turning-yellow gimmick just frustrates me. However, I actually have a hard time actually finding a yellowed one. IDK what they did with her plastic, but it must've been at least someone different because I think I've only ever seen one or two yellowed Quackers? (very very very very barely yellow BTW). I love her hair colors and how they're rainbow but not quite. The specific Quackers used for her ID photo on mylittlewiki is what I strive for mine to look like one day when I get her. I also love her symbol and her whole theme. A very unique pony!

4. Whizzer Okay so Whizzer's mane is actually made up of my 3 favorite colors (indigo/purple, blue, and green!) I also love her unique gem color. Whizzer has been another pony I've loved since my original introduction to the TE ponies. She's been bumped down a few pegs over the years but overall she's still one of my favorites; mostly due to her color scheme. Of course her symbol is super unique as well!

6. Galaxy If you asked me a couple years ago, Fizzy probably would've beat Galaxy, however Fizzy leaves a sour taste in my mouth from her recent price hike I've seen everywhere. Plus I've already got one green unicorn on here  :P But on a serious note, I've always had Fizzy and Galaxy on a tie in my head. They've always been inseparable besties in my head with Fizzy being the more fun-loving one and Galaxy being the more sensible, smart one. (IDK if they're actually like it but it's always how they've been in my head) I love Galaxy's color scheme, she's almost like a firework in a way. I just wish her eye-color was something else to pop a bit more. I also am not a huge fan of her body color as it often discolor in my experience, but that's not her fault!

Pony Corral / Re: Who was the very first G3 you ever bought?
« on: September 19, 2021, 09:59:03 PM »
The first g3 I was given (and also the first pony I was ever given) was Tulip Twinkle. (It also might've been a breezie 3-pack as I'm not sure which exactly came out first/which I received first but I usually consider Tulip Twinkle my first pony). I remember loving ponies and always wanting more, but I can recall never being able to find them on shelves. Whether this is true or just me as a child not looking in the right places, I have no idea, but I do remember the first g3 I actually remember consciously asking for and buying was at a yard sale! It was only in like 2010-2011 ish and it was Strawberry Reef, Skywishes, and Star Catcher (the one with the fabric wings, I was already gifted the second version of her LOL).

Wanted her for years but never actively searched for her since she wasn't released in America so I didn't have my hopes up for finding her cheap anytime soon...Recently (as of last week) found her in an antique mall! A vendor must've been a collector as there's a whole shelf dedicated to just ponies. Some for okay prices...A lot overpriced. HOWEVER, my Hopscotch was a fairly decent price I think (I might do a price check later as eBay prices are unreliable to cross-reference...) and in great condition. She's even more lovely in person and she's among my "pony royalty" (AKA my favorite of the herd) in my display cabinet.

Definately recommend her to anyone who's even slightly interested. Here's to hopefully finding her baby soon!  :)

Hah, no worries, it's always alright to ask a question! I'm glad your Firefly does move after all; I was a bit worried for a bit.

Me too! I was wondering why his head would've been glued in place or something. My biggest fear was if his neck peg somehow melted into his bodies plastic (I've seen this happen with G1 ponies although it isn't a big deal cuz they aren't supposed to move their heads anyway). Thankfully the mystery is solved! :D

Post Merge: September 15, 2021, 05:15:36 PM

That was a great story! :iconclap:

Thank you!

I can’t get at my Prince Firefly to check, but most G2s have turning heads.  The exceptions usually have a reason(internal lights/sound/mechanical gimmicks for the most part).  If you got yours second hand, it is possible that someone glued the head down either because they just wanted it to be like that(people do weird stuff to ponies), or someone pulled the head off for cleaning or restoration, and broke it so it doesn’t stay on normally.

Prince Firefly's Head: A Dramatic Retelling of About Five Minutes Ago

So, I decided to check my Prince Firefly right now because the anticipation was killing me. I was either going to wait until a couple of hours from now when I finished my essay, or tomorrow if I was just too tired. The mystery was nipping at me though...Why wouldn't his head turn??

I got up from where I was sitting and walked over to my pony display case, turning the lamp on to shed some light. I stared at him through the glass...Why won't your head turn!?

Just as I picked him up, a huge crack of thunder sounded off from outside...I knew this either meant I was going to find out something weird about one of my most beloved ponies, or I was going to find out I just wasn't a very observant person.

I stared at him a little longer...Did I really want to do this? What if his head didn't move? What would that mean? I possibly had a pony with a glued head? Had he been damaged in the past? My perception of my perfect Prince Firefly would be ruined forever. It was at this point I got chills and seriously considered just putting him back. But the question I had been asking ever since I read the replies about like an hour or so ago rung in my head once more...Why won't your head turn!?!?

I took a deep breath and braced myself...Given my past experiment trying to move his head, I knew I'd have to use brute force however I couldn't be strong enough that I'd risk breaking him. I placed my fingers on his head, pointer finger and thumb to opposite ears. Took one more breath, closed my eyes AND

.
.
.

With a quick breathe out I looked at what happened to my pony, shock displayed across my face. His head moved??? And I barely had to put any force behind it?? What was this horse-baloney! Just the other day I tried with probably more force and his head didn't budge at all...But there he was, face forward to me as if he was saying "Yeah you dummy, maybe you should actually pay more attention to the toys you have...or at least try more than once to move my head!"

Relief washed over my body as I realized my Prince Firefly was normal, nothing wrong at all. I carefully set him back on his specific shelf and closed the doors to the case. Another dumb mystery was solved...

TL;DR Literally nothing is wrong with my Prince Firefly, I just must've not have tried hard enough to move his head. Sorry for wasting your guy's time, hopefully my dramatic retelling made up for it though  :lookround:

I find it odd that your Prince Firefly's head doesn't turn. Every single one of my G2 ponies has a turning head, it seems very intentional.

Seconding this! Most G2s' heads turn, save for ones with magic motion gimmicks that would prevent it (like Moon Shadow for example). Prince Firefly's as far as I'm aware, should be able to turn! All my G2s' heads turn save for Moon Shadow and the playset release of Light Heart (whose heads move up and down instead).

Oh wow! I did not know that! My knowledge of g2 is quite limited despite it being my favorite design-wise.  ^^;

To be fair, I don't think I really honked on my Prince Firefly's head too hard, so maybe it's just stubborn? I'll have to check but man, I really did not know that! I assumed turning heads weren't a normal thing until some-part through g3. I guess that explains why my Clever Clover's head turns so well and sturdily. I wasn't really trying to move my Prince Firefly's head as I was under the assumption it wouldn't move so yeah, maybe it will if I try harder...

If not, I have no idea why it wouldn't turn...Maybe somebody would've glued it back on but why?

I'll update you guys in a couple hours/tomorrow to see what happens
