« on: October 03, 2012, 04:51:21 PM »
needing help please pony peeps
im just in the middle of buying ponies from a arena member from Europe and have cash converter on hand all the time cos most of my purchases are from overseas so i want to know in NZD how much im spending, iv never notice this before but there is a $9.50 price different between what the up to date online currancy converter says and what palpay says  im really scretching the budget as is.
why such a big difference i'm sending as a online purchase not gift i would be paying alot more that way  :(
then again i haven't payed so much from paypal before, is this their fees, iv always notice they doo take a little more, unless i pay through ebay or etsy, what i see is what i get charged

It's a combination. Some will be paypal fees and some will be due to the fact that the conversion rates paypal uses will be different to the official rate - same as if you changed the money at a bank.

I always thought it was free to send money through your Paypal balance or bank account?  And the only way you were charged fee's is if you were using a credit or debit card?

How are you paying? Is it the latter mentioned above because that could be where the fee's are coming from.

If I understood correctly, she's paying in the country's currency that she is getting the item. So when she chooses whatever currency to pay in, the conversion is different then what she is currently seeing online.

That's what I gathered from her post.

When I've sent money to other countires, even if it's coming straight from balance or bank account, I get fee notices. But it might vary by country, I don't know, I've only ever sent money to Mexico I think...

I always get warnings for bigger fees when using a credit card through Paypal. My understanding when reading up on it is that the bank who holds the credit card charges a fee as well as Paypal charging a fee for using the credit card overseas. That's in addition to the usual credit card fees on Paypal.

 >_<^.^

Nope there is still a fee if you send money internationally : ( Its alot smaller thou I think its about 1 percent. Using a credit card internationally the fee is about 4 percent

Sorry to here about the difference dede, it is normal thou (and relative to how much you spend), I have noticed paypals currency exchange is always more than xe currency converter! Lately the nz dollar is about .51 compared to the £ but paypal is alway under that (like .48), its a small difference but adds up fast.

Thats quite a big fee isnt it?  I do think its to do with it being an international payment, and also by visa , and yes unfortunately the Paypal currency exchange rate is different to XE .  It doesnt look like anything unusual , but that doesnt make it any easier to have to pay out so much in fees

All I can tell you is that I know paypal has the worst exchange rates around.  Even if the Canadian dollar is higher than US, I always lose money when I transfer, no matter which way it's going.  Sorry, I wish I could be more helpful.

My understanding of PayPal's International fees:
1. Converting from one currency to another they use a "retail exchange rate" that includes a fee (10%?) over the "wholesale exchange rate" you see on xe etc. See How does PayPal calculate currency conversion / exchange rate?
2. Then they also include PayPal transaction fees of 3.9% + $0.30. If you send the transaction as "Other" or "Gift", this fee appears on your side. If you send it as "Goods" the fee is taken out on the receiver's end. If you want to calculate how much to send to include the fee, send (End Amount + $0.30)/0.961.
