Title: Kokomo Toys (eBay) sent me a pony missing 1/2 her face!! O_O
Post by: kitkatvintage on June 27, 2013, 12:21:41 PM
I recently bought a lot of ponies from Kokomo Toys on eBay. I won it for a reasonable price: $25 for 10 ponies, a Fairy Tails bird, & a case. I was particularly existed for a HTF white Bluebelle hidden in the lot. Well it arrived yesterday, and this is what I found:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (http://s21.photobucket.com/user/kadees_crash/media/photo-16.jpg.html)

I messaged the seller who is a vintage toy dealer with a real brick & mortar shop:
"Hi,
I received the lot of ponies I bought from you today. While most are in very nice shape, as pictured, one pony (white body, purple hair, pink stars) has a 1/2 hole in her face!! Every picture shows this pony from the good side & there is no mention of this major damage in the description. I don't think this type of condition falls under normal play wear. Please let me know how we can handle this situation.
Thanks"

and this is the reply I got:
"For us the lot was considered play wear. We listed a many pony lots at the same time, and tried to take good pictures of everything. I'm sorry if in the hustle and bustle we missed something. If you would like to return the lot we can issue a refund."

Really??? How can someone who has long time experience buying & selling vintage toys view a giant hole in the face as "normal play wear". The rest of the lot is nice (or can be cleaned to be nice), so I'd rather cut my loss & keep everything. It just sucks that the one really valuable pony in the lot is in such poor condition. She is shown in multiple pictures, but always from the good side.

So I guess all I have to say is that I will never buy from Kokomo Toys again. If you are looking at any of their future listings, be very careful about hidden flaws!!

Wow, I cannot believe they thought that was normal play wear! I am sorry to see she is in such rough shape. :( I wondered who had won that girl.

I saw all of their lots and considered bidding a few, kind of glad I did not. Thanks for the warning!

Geez, hope you didn't pay to much for the lot :\ what a drag. I personally think a partial refund would be gracious of them to offer. That really should have been sold as bail or for repair, not in a lot listed as toys with play wear. If they really did miss that big of a flaw, they ought to slow it down and be a little more thorough in their photos and descriptions ;o_o

Definitely not normal play wear in my opinion, yikes! That is definitely bait! And cleverly hiding the flaw is not OK.

If that is their definition of play wear, I sure would like to know what they consider a bait.

Neutral feedback at best.

I am pretty lenient on flaws in my own ponies, but that is absolutely no better than bait.  Even if the rest of the pony was flawless (and it looks like that one has a lot of pindot as well?), a hole in the face is immediate bait box qualification.  I'd at least expect a partial refund, particularly if the price you paid was based mostly on White Bluebelle.

That's normal play wear... if you happen to be a teething puppy...sheesh!

sounds more like a  case of being lazy with photos and descriptions.

Yeah, that's ridiculous and unacceptable! You know they had to take pics of her good side on purpose, there's no way anyone would miss that. Very sneaky and dishonest of them, I would definitely be upset as well! I would ask for a partial refund, even though you got it all for a decent price. It's the principal of the matter and hopefully that will force the seller to be more upfront about condition in the future.

I am familiar with that shop-  they have a lot of VERY shady auctions-  I know for a fact they bought up a bunch of crap Strawberry SHortcake dolls and parts from the EarthToyCollectible mall and tried (are still trying) to pass them off as prototypes.  THey are using the fact that the plastic "pets" are in various stages of disintegration (they harden just like ponies and the color of the paint fades) as proof that they are protoypes...

So shady.

DO NOT buy from them.

LOL! Yeah, they probably missed that, cos, you know, they were busy and stuff!

Frauds! I would also demand a partial, and if not leave them appropriate feedback.

Poor pony! I'm sure they were intentionally misleading.  A hard to find pony mixed into a so-so lot only showed the good side up.  They used that to trick you. Shady as all heck.  Do you think you'll return?

I'll try to help you restore if you'd like but she won't ever be worth what you paid probably.

REALLY!?   that is soo not ok. :(

and a pony missing half its face.  totally bait, rare pony or not.   reminds me of that person who wanted 100 $ for a mimic with her feet ripped off a few years back lol.
unless the flaws are listed up front then you should be getting at least a partial refund

I think they are only a couple hours from Indy in case anybody wants to yell at them in person lol *sarcasm*.  Maybe having a bunch of pony people visit their store and educate them on what is bait and what isn't would be good.  And also educate them on showing items that have faces chewed off instead of hiding it on purpose.  Seriously, you don't miss that no matter how busy you are. :(

Have had something like this a few years ago with a seller at ebay. It was a baby from one of the families with the multi-colored hair. It arrived and the pony was missing an ear and half of a leg. The reply of the seller was "You should asked for flaws like that!" What? Should I ask everytime if a pony has all 4 legs and 2 ears and something like that???

I hope you will get your money back...and poor pony :-(

Please, leave them a negative feedback. Other buyers should be warned about them. It's just not right and I don't think it's coincidental that they only showed the good side of the pony in the auction!

Thanks everyone. :) I'm trying to give them a chance to resolve the problem before leaving feedback. I sent this follow up message today:

"Please see attached picture of the damaged pony.

The rest of the lot is nice, or can be cleaned to be in good collectible condition. I don't want to return the whole lot because the return shipping would cost half of the purchase price. Can we work out a partial refund, please? This is a pretty hard flaw to miss. I think that someone who deals in vintage toys would understand the importance of describing and photographing such a major flaw.

Please let me know. Thank you."

Unfortunately they sell such a large volume, one bad feedback would be totally lost. :( In the last month, they've received over 1,200 positives & 1 neutral. I will be leaving appropriate & honest feedback, but I want to see if they will work out a solution first. :bigups:

Oh, here's the original listing, if anyone cares to see it:

Taken from their auction:

Quote
Everything looks to be in decent condition overall. There are some heavy and moderate play wear on a few. Great for the novice collector or for the kids.

We are clearing out our storage unit to make room. We are bundling up everything by box/tote per toy line. They have all been played with and will have some overall wear, I can't say if anything is broken or complete. It's just random storage unit totes and is sold as a parts and pieces lot to be fair.  Everything has been played with and they have all been in storage for many years, might be a little dusty or could have odor.

Look at the photos closely before bidding. Sold as shown only.

Everything looks to be in decent condition?! They can't say if anything is broken or complete? So, really, a big chunk of missing pony face is considered "decent" and "complete?"

And I love that you're told to look at the photos closely. There are a lot of photos, but only the good side is showing! Wonder why they couldn't take photos of both sides? I hope you get your partial refund!

Phantom of The Opera Bluebelle custom.

When life hands you lemons, make the world's best lemonade.

Seriously, do this. It would be fantastic. Make her a little mask and cape and everything. Oh god my brain is too excited about this.

...I want to do this myself now.

they deserve a neg imo. Go read the responces to their back feedback. I really wished I left a neg X

But then they might ban you from buying products on their shady store with bad customer service!

Don't you want a shot at winning a pony with half a face missing and to get yelled at for being a bad buyer because you are not a toy expert and didn't ask all the right questions?

Sorry Kit I thought I responded to this but it was because we talked about it earlier.

That is just ridiculous! They are a brick and mortar store and know how important it is for collectors, especially pony collectors. This isn't their first run around the block dealing with MLP.

And the picture situation, how come out of all the photos that were taken, not once was that particular pony turned over????

I don't even deal in vintage ponies and if I sent that out to someone as normal playwear my boss would chew me out!

Someone who deals in vintage toys should absolutely know better. Even brick and mortar stores who do current toys wouldn't let product damaged that badly out the door.

I bid on one of their auctions but was out bid, soo glad I fell asleep and couldn't bid again in time! I was biding on a bait lot (which of course in the pic they all looked great) so if thats what they consider to be normal play then I can't imagine what hidden horrors I would have received!

Thanks for the heads up! I will make sure to avoid them.

No. I sent a message last Friday. It's now Tuesday, and no reply. I'm debating whether to open a claim or just leave feedback & be done with it.

They did offer a refund if I sent everything back, so in eBay customer service eye's that's probably the only solution they need to offer. I don't really want to pay $11.50 to send back a $25 purchase. The other ponies were in decent condition, although I would not have bought the lot if I hadn't spotted that Bluebelle. As far as the lot goes, it's not a big money loss. It's just poor business practice & I wish they would recognize that, rather than avoid the issue.

That's what I was just looking at. Holy moly, I don't think I've ever seen such rude responses to feedback. The way business owners treat people says way more to me than anything else. I'd considered visiting their store before since it's close by, but after seeing this I certainly won't be.

Eeesh! Kokomo toys is so on my  *do not deal with*  list! how can it be possible to miss that? or to describe it as normal playwear,  and  to take multiple pics of the pony and make sure they are only of the good side is such a rotten dishonest thing to do. They are toy dealers with a real shop not just an online one  (as has already been mentioned)- they knew something was seriously wrong with that pony before they listed it :throw:

Wow!! Normal playwear huh??? I would have been floored too! That is truly a shocker, I mean you dont have to list every single little flaw when listing lots but a giant hole in the face is a pretty big deal, cant really do much to restore her at that point. I am so sorry that happened to you :(

I was on ebay yesterday and saw some good listings that I clicked into, but backed straight out of when I realised where I knew that seller from - I'd probably have bid if I hadn't read this! It was reading the description and the 'brick and mortar' store make me go  :whoa: and I realised who they were! So they've lost sales from that one devious listing! I don't want any ponies missing half their face!
