Title: Rit powder vs liquid
Post by: Gator on April 04, 2021, 02:34:10 PM
I was so excited to stumble upon liquid Rit Dye Rose Pink at a store for only three dollars, I bought it.  Then I read/got comments about powder being better for hair and that liquid Rit may stain the body if it touches.

I need advice.

Ditch the liquid and order powder online?

Give the liquid a chance since I have it in hand?
Will it stain the plastic?

Also, using really hot water, will the tinsel get damaged if I want Princess Serena to be my first victim, er, subject?

Can't comment on the powder. Dye is fine, especially Dyemore.

I cut holes in a gallon size plastic bag, turn the pony upside down and dip dye the hair.

As far as tinsel,  I dyed the body  of an HQG1C sea pony in hot, but not boiling water with no ill effects to the tinsel.

The powder is a lot stronger - you only need a tiny amount. I haven’t tried the liquid but my guess is they are as much and as such. I.e they will both do the job.

It will only stain the plastic if you leave it in for a while.

I have only ever used the RIT powder to repink hair, as Noasar said you only need a few ganuals in a jam jar to do the trick :) I have never had the body stain/dye, but you can stain/dye flocking if you are not careful.

I've only ever used the powder too. It works really well for hair. I would imagine the liquid works just as well. It's made for plastics and nylon is a plastic.

If you're worried about her body touching the dye, you can use a paintbrush to brush the dye into the hair. Like for in between her ears for instance.

I also suggest, in addition to using a paintbrush, to get the hair hot during/before the dye, then dunk it into some ice water once you're done. This will open the pores of the plastic, then close them, hopefully allowing the dye to permeate and stay where you want it. (I haven't tried this on hair, but this is how I dye my ponies!) Give the hair a rinse with vinegar (or put vinegar in the ice bath, which is what I do) to help it set, and I'd suggest leaving it overnight wrapped in a paper towel away from the body. Next day or two, give it a rinse in dish soap (I use Dawn) to get rid of any excess dye. Nylon hair dyes very quickly, so I'd suggest a light hand with the dye! Best of luck!!
