Title: Sought after/Hard to find G3?
Post by: Marlin on June 07, 2019, 10:07:39 PM
I've always been a die hard G1 fan; rather steadfast and never keen to venture. Nor frankly ( ) did I really care for other mlp generations.

I have however always had a soft spot/tolerance for G3. And it seems that tolerance has turned more into a keener interest... or rather... she's rather cute... oh, I like her colours... hmm, nice symbol...

Dang it... now my collection is growing  XD

So, you G3 lovers, as I join your ranks, catch me up on years of ignorance! I'm familiar with the strawberry reef guide on rare ponies, but I'm interested to know what sort of lays beyond that in terms of which ponies collectors have generally found to be popular/sought after/harder to find, based on both store/mail order release and your collecting experiences - both baby and adult ponies.

 :what: :good: :enthralled:

Exclusives are always going to be hard to find! Holiday ponies were released at Target... Anchor's Away is a sought after pony because she was released in a playset at Costco... there were some Super Long Hair ponies that came out at the end of G3 that were European exclusive... Port-o-Bella is another store-exclusive pony that's sought after but I think her price has come down over the past years a little bit.

Ooh, yes... Port-o-bella has caught my eye - super pretty  :satisfied:  And by holiday ponies do you mean the valentines day / winter / xmas themed ones? I'm rather keen on those, too!  :lookround:

Yes! All of them! The Christmas ones especially are popular, Snowflake especially. Mistletoe is my personal favourite.

You need to look at Pumpkin Tart and Abra-ca-dabra too! :P

I definitely agree with ragamuffin and marlin. For rare G3’s names, I would definitely say super long hair Beach belle and Caribbean delight.  International HTF ponies would be Rainbow bubbles and snowdrop swirl. You probably saw that page on strawberry reef for rare ponies but that is a good reference. One thing that G3 did was make several variations of the same pony  but not as many as G4....
Good luck with you collecting!  :)

Oh oh! Crowning glory! She was released with 2 other exclusive ponies during a black friday sale through Walmart! I've never seen her online and I don't recall seeing her on here yet.

It's funny that the SDCC ponies are so readily available, but i haven't seen Caribbean Delight pop up yet.
Snow'el II is particularly elusive and expensive. The Halloween ponies are harder to find for me than most of the Christmas ponies. I also had a bit of fun trying to find a well-priced Autumn Crisp.
Birthflower ponies are harder to find than the birthstones. I'm not sure if certain months are rarer than others but as a whole the birthflowers are rather difficult to track down, but I've seen the birthstones in a few G3 lots.

The birthflower ponies can be harder to find.  (The birthstone ponies are easier to find.)  Hard to get all of them since there are 12!

Oooh.... there are some lovely ponies being suggested here!

I think I definitely want to target these winter and valentine ponies - I am a bit of a sucker for those themes. And Pumpkin Tart is adorable!

You know, I think I may have had some beginners luck on something... Those three black Friday ponies... I may have those on route in a lot that I picked up... Are they really quite hard to find?

That’s great! I would say that they are in the hard to find/ not common range costing from $15-20 which is great for a G3 because most only go for a few dollars and take forever to sell..Good luck on you pony hunting!🎉

The big Stylin Ponies are more on the uncommon side. They do pop up a bit more frequently however. I'm still looking for Cheerilee.

Some of the Breezies are also more annoying than others. If you are into Breezies.

Lol - I'm not sure I'm ready to branch out into Breezies just yet

What about babies? Are there some trickier to find than others?

Not sure, although you may have probs finding Babies Tea Lily and Wave Catcher without the unfortunate  hair  rot issue.

There are also plenty of stunning and unique common ponies as well.

Almost all of the G3 babies were released as some combination of store exclusive, country exclusive, and/or only sold with other ponies/playsets, so they are a little harder to come by secondhand. That said, the babies don't seem to be very popular in general, so they aren't often super expensive when they do come up for sale.

The only exceptions would probably be the xmas/winter babies: Northern Lights and Winter Ice, and to a somewhat lesser extent, Ribbons & Bows and Jingle Jangle. They have the double price-bump of being seasonal store exclusives, so they often go for more than the others.

Mochanut and Honolulu (or Honolu-loo if you must) are also a bit more special than the rest, since they're the only two pegasus babies -- although Mochanut is more of a "tween" than a baby. They both have a unique mold, but whether or not you like the G3 baby pegasus molds is of course up to you. ;)

Welcome to G3 collecting! (One of us! One of us!)

Oh my goodness - yes! I think the lovely colours and symbol combinations are what caught me to begin with, and (confession time) I have bought a couple of lots so my thread has been partly researching whether I had obtained anything of particular interest, too :)

The trouble is, is because there are so many pretty ponies, I'm gonna have trouble stopping now that I'm on a roll

Great info, too, BlushingBlue, re the babies, thanks! Jingle Jangle happens to be one that I got, so that's pretty exciting :)

I can't wait to get my new ponies on hand  :lookround:

G3 is what got me into ponies in the first place and it was downhill into g1 but let me tell you g3 is so fun with the bright colors and not all just pinks. Super fun to style. :D Is there anyone in particular you are looking for?

Aren't Lickety-split and Sweetberry uncommon too?
Title: Re: Sought after/Hard to find G3?
Post by: Pumpkin_Tart on June 13, 2019, 09:38:27 AM
I agree that Lickety split is semi HTF ( maybe $5-10). As far as Sweetberry goes ( if I am thinking of the right one) goes for around $5ish loose on eBay. But please someone let me know if this is wrong :)

Maybe you were thinking of Pepperberry? ;) She has a couple similarities with Sweetberry, but Pepperberry was a KB exclusive so she's more HTF.

Actually I see Pepperberry pop up a fair bit. Could depend on where one lives in the world?

Well, it doesn't take much to be more HTF than Sweetberry. ;) But yeah, I think "could depend on where one lives in the world" might be the answer to all questions of rarity. KB Toys was in the process of shuttering a lot of its locations back then, so for me to get Pepperberry and other KB exclusives, I had to travel like 90 minutes to the last store left in my state. I'm sure that had an effect on my perception of her!

Pepperberry is certainly htf here as she didn't make it over.

I think I'm right that Lickity Split had more than one release whereas Portobella only had the one release? That's why she's more common?? I've definitely seen more Lickity Splits than Portobellas.

Yes, Lickety Split was also released in a playset...

Woo! I've missed a decent bit of pony chat! :D

but let me tell you g3 is so fun with the bright colors and not all just pinks. Super fun to style. :D Is there anyone in particular you are looking for?

Yes - I do like that there is some neat colour variety with G3 - definitely one of the things that attracted me to them  ^.^ ^.^  I don't think I have any in particular that I am looking for, though I would love to get all the unique winter and valentine ponies :)

It's funny, I've seen Pepperberry pop up quite a bit when I've been looking over ebay. But that has been just the US I've been glancing over.

2005, Butterfly Island, was the best year in my opinion! All of the early G3s have the best designs imo, but Butterfly Island introduced the Dazzle Bright ponies, like Kiwi Tart and Seaspray! They're so pretty in person!
