Title: Does anyone care about G2 ?
Post by: RoseNoire on January 15, 2018, 04:48:27 AM
Hello everyone !

I was wondering if G2 gets some love, since I can"t find anything on the internet about them. Nothing about how to clean them, how to handle / repair mechanisms (Magic Motion, ...) etc.. The only thing in the preservation project seems to be about their rhinestones. And that's it. Well, I did find a topic about Magic Motions taken apart, but the pics are dead. There's nothing left, no update.

I do know people out here collect G2s. I was just wondering if it would be relevant to document G2s as much as G1s, so the newbies wouldn't be so afraid to try to clean and repair their G2s, because this is what is happening to me.

But well, I guess I'll have to make experiments on my G2s and make the documentation, trial and error myself. Don't worry, I will share it to you. =)

Have a nice day !

Rose

I care a lot about g2! There used to be a fair few sites around, but a lot of them are gone now, sadly. I don't know if they had anything on restoration, however :/
One reason I think why there aren't a lot of sites for restoration of g2s is that they just don't seem to end up in terrible condition as often as g1s? I've had a bunch with frizzy hair over the years, and some pen marks, but that's basic, and the same methods as for g1s to remove tbh.
Repairing mechanisms would be interesting though, although some I fear are impossible to repair without dissecting the entire pony, in which case you'd have done more harm than good ^^' (like the push tail-buck head variety)

But do document what you do, just because there aren't a lot of sites dedicated to g2 doesn't mean it should stay that way ^^ I agree there's far too little g2 love out there. I'd love to see what you come up with!
Sites I do know of though - moonbreeze's site  (http://lavenderlagoon.weebly.com/), MLP Land (http://mlpland.com/?l=1&p=g2_pony) and Rainbow Forest (http://gen2.aien-hime.com/). And then ofc wiki and strawberryreef. There were more, maybe someone can find something through wayback machine? I'm not savvy with that unfortunately xD

I adore G2s! They look so elegant, especially with those gems in their eyes! :lovey:

Shame I don't have more, I have the least amount of them in my collection since they're so hard to find in the wild, at least in the US.

As Shaiyeh said above, it's probably likely that there's not as much restoration information on them as there are G1s, since a lot of problems that can affect them (frizzy hair, marks, stains, tail rust etc) also affect G1 and most other generations. The only G2-specific issues I can think of are broken mechanism and missing eye gems. G1 had a ton more specific issues due to the type of plastic used, whereas other generations don't really need to worry about things like age spots, regrind, pindot, etc.

I've been getting interested in them. And do intend to own a handful. I've got my sights on Prince Firefly as my first. I love his colors.

Perhaps those who do know how to fix and clean can pool their knowledge on here, the tp and the mlp restoration site?

(frantic hand waving) Me me me!!

I somehow had the PC game as a kid and ever since it’s been a huge source of nostalgia for me. My favorite has been and will always be Ivy. I just can’t understand why it flopped in the US.

Aside from eye repair and rehairing, I've never seen a broken G2.  That's probably why there aren't any resources.

Well, I'm happy to see G2 lovers. :D Indeed, they don't get too damaged and some techniques for G1s apply to G2s as well. Aside from the MM mechanisms, I guess there is not much we could add.
I hope to find some ponies to dismantle for our knowledge soon.

Have a nice day ! =D

G2 is actually my favorite generation! The bulk of my collection is G4 as that was what got me into Ponies in general and happens to be the current gen, but I've always had an appreciation for past gens and G2 has always been my particular favorite. There is just something about them that I love.

I bought nearly every G2 that was available here, sadly we didn't get nearly the variety that Europe did.  I'm not sure why they didn't go over well - wrong place, wrong time?  A lack of shelf-appeal?  Price points?  Some of the playsets in particular were overpriced for what you got.   I'm looking at you 'Friendship Gardens', aka barely disguised reissue of LPS Zoo.

I adore G2s and when I can find some super baity ones I fully intend to dissect them and see how those mechanisms were put together >.> I miiiight be a bit curious about it and willing to do the work XD Especially to see if I can put some of them back together after.

I don't mind G2, but certainly here in the UK, they're much harder to come by. Since I can't buy online, I rely on charity and second-hand shops for past generation ponies, and the ones near me have only had G1 and G3 so far. I would certainly buy a G2 pony if I found one, but it's just that I haven't.

First I have to mention Moonbreeze has a nice site about g2, I am positive she will pop in here too.

My g2 collection is near complete, I think I miss 20 something and some are hard to find.

@Enarocketqueen, if you have the chance go to UK Ponycon. There are always vendors who sell G2 for a nice price.

I think we've moved past the point of them being plentiful at carboots as well. They were never as successful here as G3, or as in Europe (though better than the US). I have seen them at carboot sales here in the last year though. Early ones, too.

I had some when they came out, I still have them, I don't genuinely remember which ones I have though after that. I have a box full. I also have a bunch of MOC I bought in Paris in 1999 or 2000 and then promptly forgot I had until I found them in the attic, including a Hip Holly I thought I had sold years ago O.O.

I need to get them down, sort them out, work out what I have and then pack them more securely. I like them. I just have minus space issues thanks to G1.

I like G2!  The eye gems and the feathering around the hooves on them are nice details I wouldn't mind seeing revisited at some point by Hasbro.  I only have 1 G2 though (and her eye gems need a replacement which is getting mailed to me right now!), they are quite uncommon here.

My Little Wiki has a few G2 websites in its community portal section by the way:

I am not collecting them only because I have to draw the line somewhere as I really do collect a lot of stuff. I love it all, but anything I that I only like, well, its just better to not go there and save space for what I truly love the most. I think the g2s are adorable! If I had the space, I would happily collect them. I remember buying 2 back in 1997 at Target. Seeing them in package I was like "What?? It's MLP!!!!" I kept them for a very long time, but regrettably sold them when I sold off all of my ponies.

Yes :D I grew up with G2 and had to collect them all once I could put aside the money :P So I got most of mine when the G2s weren't popular at all. I remember being calling G1 ponies piglets when I first saw them xD

I've made a website about them, you can find the link in my signature. I'm also collaborating with Yum-Yum to make a new G2 book.

I'm a huge G2 lover.  I still have my collection.  Here are my favorite guides:

I think a lot of the information for cleaning the ponies are crossed over from other guides.  They do seem more durable.

I love them! :) I was over the moon when they came out. I didn't care that they looked different from G1; they were My Little Pony and that was good enough for me. I never had gotten over the ache of G1 ending, so G2 filled the hole nicely. Wish it had lasted longer....

I feel the reason flop in USA is due mold designs and they didn't appeal to kids... Alot USA kids grow up so fast want technology toys to want a teen... I recall books that I read in middle school toward high school that now gear younger audition...

I do! They're the last generation I'm trying to complete now. I've gotten about 100 in the last few months for my collection and still need 30 or so before I'm done. They are so hard to come by since they didn't sell all of them here in the states and so trying to track down any for a good price without the shipping cost being a killer is proving difficult for me. Not to mention the many variation of some in different body poses that make getting them all the more challenging.

Some of the playsets in particular were overpriced for what you got.   I'm looking at you 'Friendship Gardens', aka barely disguised reissue of LPS Zoo.

That playset was the WORST.  Hardly came with any accessories, DIDN'T COME WITH A PONY, and, yeah, lazily disguised LPS item.

I feel like they didn't play up the magic aspect enough at first?  Which may be a strange thing to say about talking, multi-colored horses, but I dunno.  They seemed much more separate from 'traditional fantasy', up until they started doing things like the G2 princess ponies.  But sadly they were already dead in the US by that point.

I also think having a bunch of unicorns and pegasus ponies would have helped.  Never understood why G2 and G3 were so sparing with them.

Myeah, the carry case was kinda bad :P It did come with a pony, but only as a Spanish exclusive >.<

I would have loved to have some proper pegasi in the G2 line, although I'm happy enough that they had dragons, even if there only were two  :)

Agreed, there should always be more unicorns and pegasi!  I think the lack of a cartoon to support the line maybe didn't help with sales in North America too.

I love the G2s as well, and have been slowly collecting them. I wish I'd had more money to spend when they were in stores and shipping from Europe was cheaper. (But I just bought 5 more from France last week and I'm excited to see them arrive!)

It really was terrible.  The dang rainbow pieces that came with the ponies didn't even fit on the fence posts they designed for it!  That was one of several reasons I ended up returning mine to Toys R' Us.  Cheap, minimal accessories and stickers too.  And ugly to boot - honestly that front panel would have been better as a sticker (like the baby bonnet school of dance) than the low-relief plastic in eye burning pink.

I grew up with G1 ponies, so when G2 came into play. I was livid. My beloved ponies had changed and I wanted nothing to do with them....fastford to about now, I found I G2 in the wild, with a hair cut...but I loved the interesting colorations. Not sure it’s name to this day, but I love him. Just got a group of G2. Ponies and kept one, because I loved the colors. I have a feeling this is a road towards expanding my desired collection:)

Main G2 ponies I'm interested in are the princesses, and baby ponies. Plus the Prince ponies.

G2 ponies are super pretty, I wish I had at least one or two of them. But same, besides that there is little to no info about how to take care of them there is also barely nothing about this gen itself, I love Friendship Gardens a lot, and more than a few screenshots you can't find anything about the game, no wallpapers, no pictures, no nothing, and in-game I see a lot of wallpaper material and other cute stuff. I also can't find almost any good quality pictures of any pony. It's sad because G2 is truly pretty.

I love me some G2s in the non-gimmicky poses. My favorites are Princess Crystal and Pretty Parlour Ivy. In fact, these two are high ranking in my top ten of multigenerational favorites.

I enjoy finding G2s with ratty hair so I can reroot them. G2 was tinsel crazy.

This thread has inspired me to bully my Dad to let me up in the attic to find my G2 and see which loose ones I have. Sometimes one comes up on the POTD which I really like, but probably have no chance of getting.

Moonbreeze's site is lovely. A couple of years ago I dug out a bunch of MOC ones I didn't know I had from trips to France in 2000 and 2001, and now I have all their English names listed and which version of accessories. Looking forward to going through the loose ones now...

I'm quite torn on them, there are a couple that I'd like to have (the Medicin one uugh) but I think they relied on accessories way too much. I would normally come across ponies second hand, so they'll be stripped of most if not all of that stuff. I don't know if their cutie marks are ornate enough to warrant me chasing them down.

Having said that, I'd be pretty chuffed to get them MIB, because their packaging is cute as!

To elaborate on my previous, laconic post on my appreciation on the forgotten generation:  :P

- Yes, their shape is very un-G1, and I understand it was a shock for many collectors back in the era, but I think they look lovely. We already had tall slender ponies with the Sweetheart Sisters, right?
- Their lil' eye jewels and molded hooves!
- Most of them came with lots of fun accessories
- Bold color schemes! We never saw the likes of Prince Firefly, Miss Painter or Jazzy back then!
- The very few unicorns this gen had are all very, very, very beautiful, some of my favourites overall :D
- Unusual and varied symbols (aka "why does this pony have like. just a wheelbarrow. there's no flowers it's just a wheelbarrow")
- The Friendship Gardens PC game! It's so simple, yet so sweet  :) I really like the "virtual pet" aspect of it.

G2s are great. I really like how they have feathering on their feet. Also Princess Crystal is SO cool.

I absolutely love the g2 ponies <3 their designs were so bold and lovely, especially the later ponies. Their shape sure took some getting used to at first, but I really liked them. The one thing I dislike is the quality of the later ponies. Their plastic often became really sticky and many of my older ponies have lost their bold colours and have turned pretty dull.

The princess line was so inspirational I wrote an entire story based on it (http://rd.aien-hime.com) ^^;

Any fellow G2 fans wanna help me find my grail Jolly? I am not looking for a complete set, the pony is enough.
In turn I can hunt for G2s you are seeking.

Her and Prince Firefly have an amazing color scheme. I wish MLP would embrace stark color contrasts again.

I adore G2, just not a customiser, so I only pull apart the vanilla ones to clean/restore, mechanisms are far too scary for me!! The eye gems are a pretty common restoration, so that's probably why they'recovered, mechanisms not so much since most collectors possibly don't mind?

I liked them, I just didn't really connect with them because I was 20 when they came out.  I do have a few I regret parting with now though. I had bought them in stores when they came out.  I don't regret parting with any iteration of Moon Shadow though. Even brand new I couldn't find one where her movable parts matched the rest of her body and it drove me bonkers especially because I loved her color scheme and symbol so much. I'm currently working on a G1 custom of her.

Funny you should mention that. Mine did match when she went into storage...and now doesn't. It's quite amusing. I think one of the Cupcakes also has a similar issue. Otherwise they've mostly survived quite well except super-sticky-glitter-demon aka Queen Sunsparkle, who I know is notorious for being a stickified mess.

I was 15 or 16 when they came out. I didn't connect with them like I did g1 but I still liked them. And I was always on the pro-G2 "all ponies are ponies" side in the conflicts over G2 in the past. I remember trogging across Paris to Galeries LaFayette and bringing several back with us in 2000 and 2001. I am not sure because of that when they stopped selling them in the UK. We kept buying them so long as they were out here but I think they stopped a year or so earlier in the UK than in France etc. And then G3 happened and G2 kind of faded out for a bit.

My favourite is still Berry Bright. She has the colours. She has the look. She's simple but beautiful. I dunno. I really like the unicorns as well, but Berry Bright was my first, and when I was going through them recently to photograph and catalogue, I realised that she's really still the best in my book :) Simple but effective. *nod*

@Zapper, is Jolly rare? I am sure I've seen her a few times recently on auction. Providing I'm thinking of the right pony...since I think mine has the French name on her card? Coquette? With the pink backpack?

Edit -I just realised my mother and baby sweetberry set is on a french card with no English at all but has a UK price label in £. I have no idea what happened there. Did we get a bunch of imports here or something? Confused >< I assumed all my French cards were because we brought them back, but maybe not O.O

I care about them a lot! I was just a baby when G2 came out, so I didn't have any originals of my own, but I did grow up with the PC game (which I still love to play) and I got some G2s secondhand when I was around 7-8 (we had a castle playset, it was a lot of fun!) My favorite G2 pony was always Ivy, and my sis and I often played with them together. Unfortunately my G2s were lost in moving at some point. Sad times.

I think the reason they're often overlooked is because they had such a short run in comparison to the other generations. But I adore them! The style was super cute, I only wish there had been more of them.

(Under spoiler for G5 stuff)

Spoiler
The leaks for some of the G5 designs almost looks like they're taking some inspiration from G2, actually. That was my first thought when I saw them. IMO that would be awesome to see, I'd really love that!

I can't remember if I mentioned this before, so forgive me if this is a "repeat post".  But I liked that the G2 male ponies were in the same molds as the females.  Makes much more sense than G1 or G4's approach.  (Although I know G1 also had some males in the same molds as females.)  The toys (any gen) are pretty androgynous to begin with because . . . well, they're horses!  We could have had canon boys for flutter ponies, wingers, etc if Hasbro hadn't been caught up on the idea that they all "had to be" girls.

I very much agree! At least with the G1s they were still somewhat similar (both males and females had eyelashes, the builds aside from the feathers on the hooves were mostly the same, etc) but G4 is probably the strangest when it comes to this because of the face shape. G2 is so refreshing in comparison; and the males are just as brightly colored as the females! I mean...there is no such distinction in real life with horses; pretty much the only way to tell is to look under the flank. I'd love to see G2's gender concepts incorporated into any future gens.

G1 is the strangest to me.  The G4 males are at least about the same size as the female ponies.  With G1 the drafthorse molds are absurdly larger than the other molds.  I find it really off-putting.  Like, okay Hasbro, you don't need to make them 1.5x bigger than the other ponies to make me believe they're a boy.  Why they gotta be so thick??

Yes, I totally agree about the G2 boys being as vibrant and interesting as the girls.  Prince Firefly is particularly gorgeous!

And then there's newborn Sniffles in the UK (and possibly Noodles in the US)? Who are boys.

Clever Clover has lovely colours <3. I just wish they hadn't recycled him over and over.

I really like G2, sadly my love was cut short by only the first couple sets being put out in the US and then..nothing ;.; That is the reason why many G2s are still brand new to me after all these years. G2s from around the world I've found have been marked up a lot on ebay, at least the ones I've been hunting for years now. They're not even that rare from what I can tell...

The lack of new characters really killed the line, from my admittedly narrow and consumer based view.
I remember going to Toys R' Us repeatedly looking for new ponies, only to be greeted with the same rack after rack of Sundance and Ivy Magic Motions, for months and months and months.  Also tons of the early playsets - the bed with Lightheart and the terribly designed Garden Case.

Never even saw the 98' singles (Cupcake, Sugar Belle, Secret Tale, Wingsong). No idea if they even made it to Canadian stores - I can't imagine that the retailers were all too keen on ordering the second offering when the first bombed so badly. We did get some of year 2 - the Sunny Garden Friends two packs (with recycled characters, bleh) and the Pretty Parlour were also shelf-warmers.

I think Hasbro's mistake with G2 in the US and perhaps Canada was probably to take that approach...to be repetitive at the start. G3 got repetitive at the end, albeit there were some ponies that had multiple releases throughout. Most of the variety in G2 came about later. I remember how excited people got online over Silverswirl coming out, the first unicorn pony. I don't know if Silverswirl got to the US or Canada, but I kind of have this feeling she didn't? I just remember it being a big deal thing.

Because I got so many from France my memory of G2 is warped in terms of what was here and what wasn't. But I've seen on ebay and found here some of the G2 I didn't think we had, so apparently we either did have them or people took advantage of travelling to Europe and did what I did.

But although there are some characters that you see over and over, they still sort of change. Light Heart for example, she changes her name as well I think halfway through? Albeit some of the name changes seem to be because of releases in Europe (like Sky Skimmer becoming Butterfly, maybe because she's Papillon in French?)

I do remember Princesses coming out here (Silver Swirl's set I guess? Trixiebelle and Crystal and Twinkle Star and so on?) I have this strong feeling that they were the first ones not sold in the US/Canada? But I also remmeber that Wing Song was hard to find here for some reason. Cupcake and Sugarbelle were pretty easy and I think so was Secret Tale, but for some reason Wing Song was more obscure O.o.

And I genuinely don't think we had the set with Junior in. Not sure about Flash, either - my sister's came from France and I had forgotten she even had her, but the notes with her accessories say 'Miss Roller' so that means she must have come from Paris. I feel like there was a sporadic availability of ponies from the 2000 and 2001 line in the UK. I don't know how true that is, but it was the impression I had.

Yup we never got the singles, let alone any unicorns or the like, it was just the first set, the Magic Motions, the McD's ponies and then poof! they were all gone from the US after 1998. My tiny town actually gave up on them after  less than a month after Magic Motions were out, the only shop that had them was my drug store and they pulled them to make room for something else

Oof :( I didn't know it was that bad. I think the Netherlands had it covered fairly well. We had at least the Magicians and all. I think we missed out on the Castle, the sailboat and the Mansion (not sure about the carriage). The last ones in the stores were the Fantasy Hair ponies from 2002 (as far as I recall). But then again... I wasn't collecting yet at that time.

BUT we didn't have the Mail Order offer >.>

Yeah, I think it might have been successful in the US if the G2 princesses were sold in the first year.

Also the Garden Case was truly a lazy, lackluster 'playset'.  They could have at least included a pony with it for the cost, and had more accessories.  The accessories it did come with were weird.  "And here are . . . some hooks! And a GATE."   Hasbro my dude, you are selling My Little Ponies, not real estate.  Put in hair accessories, hats, or wearable items.

*laughs* Yes indeed, 'Here have a random giant butterfly and some other stuff in one boring colour'.  The carry case was incredibly awful - it didn't latch well, and the rainbows (from other pony/sets) didn't even fit on the gates!  It was huge and not even very interesting to play with - you'd get better mileage out of most cardboard boxes.

Distribution up here was absolutely lack-luster.  There was one initial wave of the first singles (Berry Bright, Clever Clover, etc.) and then ... Magic Motion Ivy/Sundance, and nothing else, for a long time.  The Magic Motions are fine, but nobody is going to buy more than one each?  What were they thinking?  :throw:

Thinking back I think we had the Glow sisters. Copper/Silver/Golden. Because mine are not in French packaging and I didn't buy any G2 online. I only had a friend send for Sea Breeze for me.

And maybe we had the wedding couple type ones. Also maybe the ones that...did they have music or something? Golden Light and...? I had them but sold them, I am pretty sure about that, but still have Morning Glory and whatsit set.

We had three sets of twins from France. Actually I think that was a gift from a Dutch friend so I don't remember if we had twins in the UK at all.

We had the mother and baby sets as I have one in French packing with a UK price label on it.

So I guess we were roughly the same as the Netherlands except that distribution got spotty and not all areas/stores had everything. I picked up Jazzy and Rocky second hand but don't remember seeing them in stores in my locale.

I feel like I should have kept better records of this :( I do have a couple of inserts but *shrug*.

I'm from Europe, growing in Belgium and living in France now... and G2 are the ponies I has as a child!
I SO love them! Also, I'm chocked to read you all about their repetitive characters, as they are many, many different G2. I wouldn't be surprised there's more different G2 than G4! (in toys of course)
I've got only a few of them, but they aren't rare at all, every time I found fleamarket/thrift shop ponies, it's G2.
So I bet it's only a difference of country, it's seems to be a gap between Europe and USA about them.

Also, I'm sad about the fact Hasbro decided to ban them form it's history.

I'm sure if we had gotten some of the more jazzy ponies like the Glows and Hip Holly it might have helped, it's weird that they went right to an even smaller than core seven idea. I mean since G1 had only been gone a handful of years at the time and sold well having lots of different G2s to pick from should have been a good idea I think...(Then again we didn't get the G1 Tales ponies in the US even when the cartoon did well so who knows, maybe they thought we were brunt out? :\)
