Defrizzing hair with a hair curler?
« on: December 20, 2015, 10:22:30 AM »
I'm in the mood to work on some of my ponies today, but most of what I need to work on is ponies with frizzy hair.  I had tried to use a hair curler instead of a hair straightener to do it before, but it didn't work very well and I've hear that hair curlers in general just don't work great.  Has anyone had success working on frizzy hair with a hair curler before, do you need any special techniques?  I'd really like to be able to finally fix up some of these ponies!

I have been successful with a curler as a finishing option, it works best for me -after- the method where you dip the pony's hair in boiling water and brush it out straight.

Hmm, is the boiling method okay to use on ponies with tinsel in their hair?  I've heard it works wonders, but pretty much all the ones I need to fix have tinsel hair.

From personal experience: boiling is safe to do with tinsel, just keep a close eye on it.

I use the boil method too-  only I wrap the hair very tight around a large curler- then dip it in NEAR boiling (but not actually boiling) water-  I find the actually boiling water can frizz or damage the hair- and that if you wait for it to cool just a bit the results are just as good with less risk.

Combing it out seems like a good method too.

I have also used a curling iron on de-frizzing doll hair.  It is less reliable and more risky because it is hard to know how long to hold the curling iron, and they all have different heats it seems.  If you use that method, make sure the hair is WET first.

I might give the boiling method a shot then.  I'll test it on a pony whose hair is already so bad it can't get any worse, haha...

How long do you boil the pony hair for?

Thanks :)

I don't know if a hair curler would do anything to frizz since you don't get to pull the hair with it as you would with a straightening iron or the boil-comb method. Shimmer, you don't need to boil it for long, just dip the hair in boiling water and comb while still hot. :)

You can use a good old fashioned clothes iron as well :P I find that works better on ponies with tinsel actually as it straightens tinsel very well.

You place the hair in between either side of a pillow case (or other cotton material) - make sure the cloth is damp and the hair is damp with water and something like condition. Then just iron as normal - make sure the iron is only on the pillow case :P

I use a curling iron to straighten pony hair since I don't have a straightening iron. Pulling the hair through the iron in tiny segments seems to work the same as running a straightener over it, I would guess...again, don't have a straightener to compare.

Why didn't I think of this!  I might give this a shot too.  I'm still really behind on my pony cleaning though, but I'll get there, haha.

Hmm.. never thought about using a hair curler or regular iron for this! I've used a flat iron once with good results.. it was a tip I picked up on Youtube!  :P

Note: Mine was just regular G1 hair without tinsel!  ^.^

Interesting... reminds me of the craft mini iron... I'll bet this would work really well! Anyone ever try it?

Personally I would not boil a pony with tinsel in her hair.

That goes double for the G3s with the translucent tinsel.

I NEED to try that.

I usually use a hair curler, but I've learned the hard way to be very careful with it. Admittedly, because it's very quick and easy to warm it up. I have done a boil a couple times, but usually only if I'm going for curls.
