Title: How much interest is there in g2 playsets?
Post by: Nella on August 14, 2023, 12:28:59 PM
I have several of the bigger g2 playsets and I should dig them up from some boxes for pictures but I have the feeling g2 playsets aren't really 'in demand'. Is that true? Is it worth it to add them to my thread or is it better to wait a few more years? (I could use the space....)

I'm not a G2 expert, but whenever playsets and accessories pop up, people really seem to like them.

Like everything else G2, the real interest and value is in anything that didn’t come out in the USA. If it was in US stores, it’s usually not that popular. So Ivy’s Parlor, the Rainbow Forest, the wedding playset, and the Garden Carry Case aren’t too much in demand. It will still sell to the right buyer, but the big ticket items are always the European items. Some of the smaller 1999 releases (Sweetberry’s Kitchen, Queen Sunsparkle’s Throne, The Ballroom playset) were hard to find in the US, and they’re not such storage and shipping issues, so they can be a bit more midrange in price.

And as for the rest of the playsets, the later in the line, usually the more valuable.  The same is true of the ponies.  As the line went on, it started to disappear from shelves in certain countries.  By the end, only a few places still got new stock, so the last year stuff tends to be the hardest to find. Because of this, even the less inspired ponies and playsets usually command decent prices. Really rare stuff like the Mansion can be pretty pricy since it comes up so infrequently.

I had a hard time finding my G2 Mansion, & even then it's incomplete, though the building is intact. I still need the G2 School & accessories for the mansion & the castle. I'd also be after a ballroom set without a Pony.
I'd be very interested in G2 accessories, especially the rarer kind!!! And a lot of folks liked my pic of the mansion I put up in Pony Brag thread, so I think there'd be quite the interest there

I also go for that later playsets/accessories are more wanted than the earlier years due that most of them were sold outside of the USA.
I am not sure if a few years of extra waiting would help. Another thing is shipping. Prices are so high these days and not every accessory is something that fits in an envelope. Then it's best to try to sell them locally for a good price.

Playsets can be hard to move due to shipping costs and space issues, but the rarest stuff will still sell.  For the more common stuff, the selling price will need to be low to compensate for the shipping costs.  Some of the later G2 playsets aren’t too big, and they’re pretty rare. Those can go for a pretty penny, especially if they’re something really fun(like the boat set). The Mansion is rare enough that it’ll probably get snapped up despite the shipping issues, especially if it’s got the ponies with it.

G2 collectors aren’t a huge group, but they are passionate.  There is a market for the playsets, but it’s complicated.  I think the fact that it’s a smaller line might help it.  It’s the one generation that it’s logistically possible to actually complete, and I think that may contribute to the playset market.  The fact that the later stuff rarely comes up also means that people who are going for a complete G2 line tend to grab whatever they’re missing as soon as it hits the market because who knows how long it’ll take to come around again?  They’re also more likely to be willing to pay for the high shipping costs as well.

If you have the early large playsets, you’ll probably have to sell them at rock bottom prices, or hope to find a local buyer.  The later, rare stuff will get a lot more interest, and you should be able to sell it for a reasonable amount.  If it’s a smaller playset, and it’s a late one, those should get snapped up pretty quickly since shipping will be less of an issue.

Thank you all for your input. I have the Mansion, Schoolhouse, Wedding carriage, Castle and pretty much all of the earlier stuff.

I think the G2 playsets are so fun and clever! I'd love to own more of them, but they don't come up very often, and shipping from Europe (where they were originally sold) to the US is often cost-prohibitive. And sometimes they aren't even offered to be shipped out of the EU, so it makes it even harder to obtain! But I imagine to the right collector group, they'd be very popular!

In addition to my primary post. What do or would you do with a damaged playset? I have a bait mansion I can't trash (which my hubby suggested). Are there playset custom artists as well? I know there are for pony's.....

There have been a few collectors in the past who have posted customized playsets.  Then there are the crazies who tear a playset apart and sell the pieces at ridiculous prices for "repairs".   -_- It might depend on the extent of the damage and how much you are asking.  I *might* be interested.

The mansion itself is quite hard to find so I will sell that one as it is. Next in line I would put the castle and the wedding carriage.

Woah, I’m glad you didn’t trash it Nella! A baity mansion would probably still be worth something to a collector, because I imagine it would be like a baity Mimic - it’s still a Mimic, but more affordable for the average person!

True, well, you've all convinced me to indeed wait for the correct buyer. If someone is interested, please PM :).

(I don't have all the missing pieces, the roof, hinges and the base are broken and the handle to carry it is missing)

If someone is looking for some G2 playsets AND not horrified by the shipping cost, you're welcome to PM me as well.

I forwarded your pictures to a german group, maybe someone is interested.

I was fortunate to get my complete g2 mansion from another collector who quit collecting.
