Pony Corral / Re: Share your best Pony luck ever.
« on: December 01, 2016, 05:14:32 PM »
I've been very fortunate over the years and have had many lucky moments when it comes to ponies

But my 3 'luckiest' moments were:

When my mother's friend worked at a daycare and showed me the ponies they had there, one of them being Mimic ! I traded an extra Pinkie Pie for the Mimic and now she sits on my shelf safe from all the horrors of being chewed on by kids

Another lucky pony moment was when I stopped at a garage sale and picked up Cutesaurus, Edgar, Spunky, Creamsicle, and Kingsley for $3 each, what a deal !

And lastly, I bought a pony lot of craigslist for $15 and in that lot I received a Dainty Dahlia in near perfect condition with her barrette, ribbon, and comb; and also found a hidden Baby Leafy in the lot whoo !  :P

I just love hearing all these stories about pony luck, makes me so excited to find some more lucky treasures out in the wild  :)

Off Topic / Re: Does anyone here have Sugar Gliders?
« on: November 10, 2016, 05:09:56 PM »
We had a family of sugar gliders for 13 years :)

We bought a female, male, and the male's sister from a breeder in Florida when I was little. We brought them back to Michigan and ended up having 3 babies over the years.

Like mentioned above, they are VERY messy and stinky. Really stinky. We never had a problem with poop flinging, but maybe we just got lucky :P But if you clean regularly this shouldn't be a problem. We kept ours in an old bird cage and we pinned a large sock to the top of the cage and that's where they slept, we would change the sock every week and they loved sleeping in it !

I'm not sure what we were "supposed" to feed them lol, but we just fed them leftovers and whatever we had in the house really. Fruit, yogurt, cereal, granola, etc. We would put it all in a dish at night and they would pick through it. They loved fruit loops the most lol.

Ours only came out at night as they are nocturnal, and would "scream" during the day if we made too much noise and woke them up. But we would still hold them during the evenings when they were mostly awake.

The babies are just the cutest !!! Ours ended up having 3 babies all together, we sold all 3 but it was still plenty of fun having them while they were just babies :) When they were babies we would take them from their mother during the day and keep them in a sock pinned to the inside of our shirt, this is what gets them used to humans and makes them friendly. We would then return the baby to its mother at night and they sleep inside the mothers pouch just like baby kangaroos !

Sugar gliders can live for quite awhile, our last sugar glider died after us having him for 13 years, so if you plan on getting one plan on having it for awhile :)

I also agree with what was stated above, definitely get more than one ! They get very lonely and are much happier with a friend.

Sugar gliders are super fun pets to have, but personally I've had all the sugar glider time that I need in a lifetime lol. They are very snuggly and cute and adorable, but they may seem to get boring after awhile especially when they spend most of their time sleeping during the day. But overall it was a lovely experience to own them, and I'm sure you would have a lovely experience too if you decide to get some :)

Good luck in your search for them ! I know they are quite pricey, especially since it would be better to get more than one. Hopefully you find a good deal, I would check craigslist as many people get sugar gliders and then decide they no longer want them.

Best of luck ! :)

(I don't have any pictures of mine at the moment since it's been awhile since we've had them. If I find some later, I'll be sure to post them :) )

I've had a few ponies/pony items that I've missed out on over the years, but this one I still think about often

Last year I was searching craigslist garage sales for ponies and came across a sale that had 2 playsets (in box) and a box of ponies with accessories on a table pictured. It was posted for the following day, unfortunately I worked that day and had no one to stop by the garage sale for me  :( I couldn't see the prices for anything and I'm always afraid about messaging a craigslist seller because in my past experience it never goes well (rude sellers, raised prices because of interest, no response, won't hold items).

I had really wanted to call off work for that day, but seeing that they were selling many antiques I just told myself that the prices would probably be ridiculous and I just didn't have a whole lot of extra money for it. I decided that work was more important and I needed the money, not to spend more !

So the next day I went to work as planned, and thought about that garage sale all day.

But the following day I didn't have to work, and I decided to go to that garage sale anyway! I got to the garage sale and from the drive way I could see a playset waaaaaay in the back of the garage on the table and ran to it. It was the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe, everything in the box (including instructions!). And the best part? Only. 6. Dollars. I couldn't believe it ! My excited was short lived though, as I looked around and couldn't find the other playset (Baby Bonnet School of Dance) or the box of ponies pictured  I asked the lovely ladies selling and they said someone had already bought the rest of the pony items the day before  :(

While I am still thrilled that I was able to get one playset, and for such a steal, I'm still totally bummed that I missed out on the rest  I'm sure the prices would have been similar and who knows what awesome ponies could have been in that box !

At the end of the day, I wish I had called in sick to work for that garage sale  :pout:

Pony Corral / Re: Taking advantage of collectors?

Am I the only one who thinks $3 for an adult pony and $2 for a baby are great prices?  :P  Especially if you don't have to pay shipping.  I mean, it sucks that the price went up, but still.  I'd be all over that.

Sorry, I should have been more specific   :)

All of the G1s they sell are common and of bait quality: hair cuts, marker stains, cancer, and chew marks. They were barely worth a dollar to begin with lol, definitely not worth 3 dollars now  :P

Of course if any were htf, that would be a different story !

I've had something similar happen to me recently.

I go to the nearby flea market every weekend and there are several vendors there who sell ponies and other toys. When I first started buying ponies there, the prices were always $1 for the 'big' ponies (adult G1s and G3s) and $.50 for small ponies (baby G1s, baby G3s, and all G4s).

After buying ponies every week, one of the vendors asked if I collected them. They seemed very nice about it, so I went ahead and said yes. Every since then, her prices magically changed to $3 for 'big' ponies and $2 for 'small' ponies.

How rude.

I have avoided her booth ever since. I would have loved to have asked her why the sudden change in price, but I hate confrontation.

But now I've learned my lesson, and now if anyone asks if I collect them I reply with 'No, just buying for my niece' and that seems to work out well.

I'm sorry that you've also been taken advantage of ! I would try not to mention that you're a collector, hopefully that will keep you from being ripped off again. Best of luck with your finds though  :)

Thank you everyone, you've all been very helpful ! :)

Question about Apoxie Sculpt: Where do you guys purchase yours? I've searched online and it seems that you can only buy it online, are there any stores that sell it?

Customs / Questions from a first time customizer ~

Planning on making my first custom for the upcoming pony fair ! And since it's my first real custom (I've painted ponies with plastic hair before, but this will be my first official full body re-paint and re-hair after much practice on fakies lol) I do have a couple questions for all you pros  ;)

1. What kind of clay do you use for sculpting on the ponies body?

2. What is the best kind of sealant to use? I've heard that Triple Thick is good for a shine finish and Testor's Dullcote is good for a matte finish, correct me if I'm wrong  :)

3. When re-hairing a pony, what glue do you use to glue the hair in? And what is the best way to apply the glue?

4. Are you supposed to glue the pony's head back on when finished? And if so, what glue do you use?

5. And what glue do you use to glue on other items like jewels, etc.?

6. How long should you wait after finishing painting/sealing the pony before moving on to re-hairing to avoid smudging anything/messing anything up?

7. How can I achieve a gradient/ombre paint look without an airbrush?

I believe that's all the questions I have for now, thank you in advance ! And if you know of any other tips that might be helpful feel free to share

Pony finds from the last 6 months  :)

Thank goodness the winter is over and garage sale/flea market season is back ! I have very little luck in finding ponies during the winter around here  -_-  But here's what I've collected over the past few months, most of which were found in the fall before all of the garage sales hibernated for winter

Very excited about Bubbles and Seashell, I adore sitting ponies ! And Zig Zag the Zebra is another pony friend to add to the collection, just need Cha Cha and Oakly now ;)
