Title: My thoughts on getting some G1 to G4 ponies from Hasbro *Poll added*
Post by: Sunset on July 12, 2013, 06:19:18 AM
**** My updated thoughts on forming a group on pg. 4! *******

So I've been thinking for a while about how it is that so many brony favorites are being made and what we collectors can learn from this.  My conclusions are that the bronies initially strongly focused on a very limited number of ponies that they were lobying for.  I think that the problem with getting G1 characters made is that there are so many choices and we all have our favorites and no single pony stands out to Hasbro.   And then let's consider Minty.  All signs are pointing to an official release.  Now Hasbro may have been intending to release her anyway, but it is interesting that this comes have an extended campaign for this particular pony.

My suggestion is that we all concentrate and campaign on a single pony, at least initially.  If we can get Hasbro to set a precident for a G1 to G4 pony, then we can procede to other popular ponies.  I am going to suggest Firefly.  Now just so you know, she is not actually my favorite pony personally so this is not me campaigning for my favorite pony.  But Firefly is a featured character in the first special.  She was one of the first ponies inducted into the pony hall of fame.  And also a lot of bronies like her, too, and I think we should definitly take advantage of that.

What are your thoughts?

I think Firefly would be a great choice, and probably one of the most likely releases.

I personally would love Glory, she's my all time favorite and I've seen her on a lot of the new G1 shirts.

Maybe Snuzzle would be a good choice since she's been on the MLP Fair Logos?

I always wished Firefly would be Rainbow Dash's mom. :) I agree!

Ok - so I am clearly going to say Baby Fifi :P

But I actually agree and see your point. In addition I think Hasbro does like its little nods to bronies and Firefly is a pony which has some acceptance in that community so perhaps Hasbro can feel as though they are covering all their bases.

Plus...SHE IS PINK!

I don't know about ONE pony.  We also have the copyright/trademark crap to put up with.  The less trips to the patent office Hasbro has to make the better for them.  However, if we concentrated on a set of six ponies (two of each main species) it would be better.  Perhaps start out with Faust's original picks for the Mane 6.  If that's a success then move onto perhaps the "Movie Star" Ponies from the 1986 film and the Twinkle Eye Ponies as Crystal Ponies.

I would be all for it, but I would like a different pony ^^; Like Twilight or Glory :D Firefly is too Rainbow Dashy for me. I LOVE RD, but wouldn't want two of her ;)

There is not a copyright issue with these ponies and with these names. That whole thing is just an excuse. And as Hasbro never actually said it - it was Faust which claimed that is what they told her - I still take any of that genuinely having been actually said with a giant pinch of salt.

There is absolutely nothing stopping Hasbro trademarking a G1 pony name. Applejack's very existence in the G4 line - in her G1 colours, symbols is enough evidence let alone getting down in to the legalities of it.

Also, Hasbro created the original ponies and first set of rainbow ponies for the 25th anniversary so they couldn't be a copyright issue :)

Butterscotch, Firefly, and Bluebell wouldn't be too risky for them, either.  They have really cute color combos that aren't found on any current G4s that I can think of.

Also, either G1 had a lot of really cute purple ponies with blue manes, or my mom and I are color-biased, because that's most of my childhood pony memories. :)  This may also be the reason why when I created Zena, I settled on a purple pony with a blue mane.

A couple of the babies wouldn't be a bad idea either, as the G4 line seems to be awfully short on fillies.  I'm thinking maybe Baby Lucky (no boy G4 babies yet!), Rainribbon, or Pineapple.  Picked them for the possibility of easy trademark, and the pleasant color schemes that could sell really well.

The reason I thought one pony would be better is because I just don't know if Hasbro would be willing to do a whole group at once.  I'm not saying that we should only have on G1-G4 pony ever, but that it might be easier to get Hasbro to try it out on one.  Once they figure out there is a market, then we can start campaigning for more.  Plus, if we are all chanting the same name, then Hasbro is more likely to hear us.  The more you split that up the more it all just starts to sound like chatter.

Now I'm not saying that a group wouldn't work.  But there are some problems with doing a group.  First of all, we would need to keep it down to a very small number of very specific ponies.  Otherwise, it is too tempting for everyone to just split off and lobby for their own favorite pony.  Then we would need to come up with a unifying name or slogan for that group.  I agree that the G1 ponies that Lauren Faust based FiM characters off of would be a very likely group.  But it is quite a mouthful to be running around saying "the G1 ponies that Lauren Faust based the mane 6 off of."  And not as catchy or likely to stick in Hasbro's collective mind as single pony name.  Btw, that would be only 5 ponies since there is no point in lobbying for Applejack.

If we decided to do a group, I would also say that another likely group would be the ponies being used the most  for the retro merchandising.  Let's see, that would be Firefly, Glory, Sundance, Snuzzle/Peachy ( I have a hard time telling the difference on some of the pictures I have seen of the merchandise) and that princess pony that keeps popping up but I don't remember her name.  Clearly Hasbro already thinks these ponies are popular and there is already merchandising built in.

One added note,  I think we need to make sure that Hasbro knows that we want G1 characters in G4 molds.  I just don't think Hasbro will ever try doing the retro G1 molds again.  And to be honest, I don't think they would sell as well to children as G4 molds and all of the G1 characters we are talking about are common enough that most of us already have them in our collections or can buy them for fairly cheap. (Those are a couple of reasons that I don't believe the retro collections sold well.)

If you gonna do it, Minty, have to have her.  I love the G1 Minty.  Or Mimic.
Title: Re: My thoughts on getting some G1 to G4 ponies from Hasbro
Post by: ravengusty on July 12, 2013, 11:03:05 AM
I've seen Gusty on a few retro t shirts and Sundance too so I'm championing them myself. Firefly is too much like Rainbow Dash (don't get me wrong I love Firefly but not enough to ask Hasbro to make her).

I don't think they will be more likely to make a single pony we want than a group of six ponies. If Hasbro bother to listen to us at all they'd probably take the idea of making some G1s into G4s and then pick their own choices ignoring the little people. Remember FiM is their cash cow so it will come first before all other pony related things and Equestria Girls is their current big push on the market. I don't think it likely that they will go with the idea anytime soon no matter how many collectors ring their doorbell.

It's a good idea though  I think if you wanna set something like that up then go ahead, bring the masses to Hasbro and demand a Firefly I'll be in the shadows occasionally shouting out the word Gusty

When I first heard about the "we lost the trademark" rumor in regards to why Applejack was the only G1 pony in the G4 universe my husband was quite skeptical.  He's a paralegal and one of his jobs is registering trademarks so he went to one of the databases he uses and looked up a few of them, I remember Firefly and Moondancer in particular.  Hasbro has merely let their trademark lapse.  Trademarks are quite specific.  While Firefly may be quite a popular name a "fashion doll in the shape of a horse with accessories" named Firefly (not a direct quote but it was something like that) is not being used elsewhere.  It is not a question about whether they can get the name trademarked again, it's a question of whether they think it is worth it to renew the trademark.

I would love G1 ponies as G4 and am quite willing to join any campaign to get whatever pony is agreed upon in the spotlight.  I think it's reasonable to expect that if one pony does well others might follow but I can offer no guesses as to how difficult it may be to even get one produced.

Hey many bronies want to see G1 ponies too, like myself! I think firefly must be rainbows mom, Posey should be Fluttershy's mom, and her dad a pegasus, and she was raised by her dad in cloudsdale perhaps because her mom decided that he should raise her since she was born a pegasus. Fizzy is my all time favortie G1 I would love for the group to just travel somewhere "dream valley"? Or another locaton in equestria where you would see many G1 ponies even if they are backgrounds. Also a flashback with Applejacks parents and how they died perhaps her mom was the original Applejack, and the dad Tex?

They didn't put in the names, so I guess you can say that Hasbro can the same thing off again with the G4s. Somehow they are not very keen.

I don't think making just 1 pony is going to make me very interested. I will be more compelled to collect if Hasbro actually makes more than just Firefly. It's either they make a full set, or don't bother at all.

I don't think the first 6 collector's ponies is a good idea because while they are the "classic", they are too tame and mild to create a big bang as an introduction set. I would like to see something more vibrant and interesting such as maybe the Twinkle Eyes or Twice As Fancy, if not characters from Year 4/5/6. Something fancy and not look tacky when put into prduction.

Personally, I'd like to a 4 seasons unicorn set, with a G1 unicorn representing a different season and sold in a box set.

Spring - Majesty
Summer - Greek Sunbeam
Autumn - Gusty
Winter - Powder

Foronce, I'd like to see symbols on both flanks and a thicker tail.

I would be happy to see any G1 made into a G4.  I would have suggested Majesty but in G1 time she was the Queen of the ponies, lived in Dream Castle and Spike lived with her.  She wouldn't be able to have her own playset or anything so I'm not sure how that would work.

How is Hasbro finding out what bronies want anyway?  Hasbro said they lurk here they should know what collectors want too.

In all actuality, Applejack has the name most likely to have copyright issues(and other issues for that matter).  Applejack is the name of a LIQUOR, and it far proceeds MLP, and was literally the liquor of the US before Bourbon took over.  It's actually very tasty. . .if you can find it.

But thats the joy of trademark - lots of things can be named the same thing as long as they are not impinging on one anothers identity. There are trademarks for plenty of other items which are also the names of ponies. *shrug* It was an easy argument to simply say "be quiet collectors we are having Fluttershy and not Posey".

Just my opinion but I agree we need to work on one pony and if that gets made work on a few more. Maybe the orginial poster can add a poll for a few of the older more popular ponies ie: Firefly, Glory, Gusty, Moondancer to see which our first pony should be. We need to stand united so Hasbro can't possibly ignore us. If they come back with the copy right excuse we need to tell them we don't care if she's called Firefly or Firefly Sparkle ()

They have contacts with brony sites like Equestria Daily.  Maybe we should make a Dream Valley Daily.

I vote Wind Whistler.  A nice color scheme, has been gaining some attention with bronies, and of course my favorite.

I think this is a great idea and perhaps Hasbro would finally pay attention if all of our voices were focused on one single character.  :)

Firefly isn't my first choice either but I'd happily support her re-release, her petition and any other chance we have to bring a g1 character onto the market.

Leaning a little further into the late G1s, I really think a set of the 4 glittery Sweetheart Sisters (GSHS) would be an awesome introductory set. They all have glittery symbols, tinsel hair, and earrings! Plus, I would die if they really made Starflash again! Also, TAF ponies or Twinkle-eyed would be really cool to see as well as G4 re-introductions. Oh-me-oh-my!!! The possibilities!!!! I just hope they stay away from flocked ponies for now- they just end up so dirty and sad looking lol!

Definitely Firefly. She's probably the biggest favorite G1 in the brony community. Surprise is also, so they would make quite a bit off of those two. In fact maybe have a G4 set that includes AJ, Firefly, Posey, Surprise, Twilight, and Sparkler since that's what the G4 mane 6 is based off of.
Besides them Glory, Bubbles ( ;) ),  Starshine, Moondancer (who's name was mentioned in the first episode of FiM), and Bowtie. Maybe some big brothers also.  Sea Ponies might have support also.

I wonder what the reaction to a G4 Sundance and Megan set would be? They've got the EqG human molds to work with now. :devious:

I would love an episode of Rainbow visiting her parents in Cloudsdale and seeing Firefly on the screen!!! Eeek if they did that, my dream of having an official Firefly brushable could could true! Come on Hasbro, do this is swear its an easy goldmine!

I also want to see G4 sea ponies! :p Gusty or Sugarberry ould be neat!

I've added the poll.  I wanted to make it so that people could vote for more than one but I didn't see that option?

I did not add Minty since we are already getting the G3 version of her.  I think it is unlikely that Hasbro would do another slightly different version of her so soon.

Firefly is not my favorite pony but I agree that we should all rally behind one g1 pony being made into a g4 mold to show Hasbro how popular it would be. If, say, Firefly, got made into a g4 I think she would be wildly popular and maybe that would get Hasbro thinking along the lines of doing more g1-g4's. If we decide to rally behind Firefly I would totally be on board, hoping that someday they would do more (Gusty!).

Also, just about any pony would give us another color of base to work with to make custom g4's from without having to do FBRs. And I am definitely in support of ANY new non-mane6 toys.

Firefly is THE MLP that fans of all gens recognize, and if there is a big picture with 80s icons, Firefly is the pony representative.  Besides, she's beloved by the brony community as the proto Rainbow Dash, and she's had official artwork drawn by Lauren Faust in the G4 style.  She even appears in the new pony comic books in a background cameo!

I also voted for Glory (as she is, to me, the essence of MLP in the 80s).  She's appeared on a lot of pony shirts and merch in recent years, and she's got such a classic look - white unicorn with 2-toned hair.

I also voted for Medley.  Lauren has drawn her in G4 style, there is a bg pony in the new show who looks a lot like her, and she's got such a unique color theme.  She looks a lot like Lyra Heartstrings, who is also a beloved character, and let's face it - we need more green ponies!  Especially green pegasi!

I agree. I think Firefly would be our strongest G1. She would sell well with not only us collectors but Bronies too and if Hasbro makes a lot of $$ from her they'd be more likely to grant us a set of 4 or 6 G1's.

I really think Firefly could be our "gateway" G1 to G4 pony

So here are my current thoughts.  Would anyone like to join a group that promotes G1 to G4 ponies in general just using Firefly as the mascot?  I was thinking maybe someone would be willing to do a facebook group like the Minty one?   I was thinking then we as a group could focus on maybe the one pony to start with while making it plain that there are lots of characters we would like to see.  And customizers and artists could post pictures of G1 characters in G4 molds and styles.  I'd be willing to come up with some banners  but I don't know that I have the time or know how to run a facebook group.

And any thoughts on a catchy name for a group like that?

Bouncy! ...anyone?
No, I do think Firefly would be the best to choose for something like this. The group sounds like a great idea!

I'd love to see G1 characters turned G4 (very much more than I'd want to see it done for G3 characters) but I don't see myself putting my heart into rallying for one certain character or even a small group of them. I like be surprised by the releases and there isn't one character in particular I'd like to see really (the exception being my personal bias for any of the G1s I had as a child but I don't think any of those would be a popular push). I'd support generally asking for Hasbro to adopt G1 characters and toyline concepts if a way to do that is realized.

Yupp I agree. A group would be great, I'd join :)

I love Firefly and Medley since they were my first ponies along with AJ and Bow Tie.

I will admit I am particularly partial to the ponies that I played with myself.  So I guess in addition to the above four (of which AJ already was made) - I'd also be super thrilled to see Lickety Split, Surprise, and Glory.  I had Cotton Candy, Minty and Peachy too- but wouldn't want just a bunch of earth ponies.

I suspect Lauren Faust is around my age- since she has lots of fanart of Medley and Firefly-  which in turn is why the bronies like these two in particular.

I thought of a way we could tier things.  The ponies that appeared on television are the ones that will get the most attention, so concentrate on them.

Start off with Lauren Faust's original characters
Firefly
Twilight
Applejack
Posy
Sparkler
Surprise

If those are successful, move on to the more well known ponies from the TV series (a.k.a. the "Movie Star" ponies.)
Wind Whistler
North Star
Shady
Magic Star
Gusty
Buttons

At the same time remake the TE ponies as Crystal Ponies (chance to advance the new pony type.)
Fizzy
Galaxy
Gingerbread
Sweet Stuff
Masquerade
Whizzer

Then if this proves successful make the rest
Medley
Heart Throb
Paradise
Lofty
Bow-Tie
Sundance
Lickety-Split
Cupcake
Cherries Jubilee
Truly
Glory
Moondancer
Powder
Ribbon

I voted Firefly because of all the reasons Sunset stated, and for Surprise for those same reasons. I think she's equally well like amongst bronies, as those two are well know to be the 'prototype' Rainbow Dash and Pinkie. I've even seen a lot of fan art which includes a G4 style Surprise as a Wonderbolt.

I voted for Twilight lastly because again, all the reasons above, and also because she's been featured in show as Twilight Sparkle's mother and that's another reason for her to appeal to all three demographics.

I would love to see a whole wave of 'Prototype G4s', with those and also including Sparkler, Posey (although she may be too close to Fluttershy), and... Applejack. Okay, maybe not Applejack :P

This just made me think how much I would love to see so-soft ponies in G4!

I know it's been a while, but I thought of something.  Hasbro might not be inclined to make Faust's originals first because they already have Mane 6 who are essentially the same characters.  I suppose they could change the characters a bit (I like picturing Sparkler as a irritable explosives expert whose only joy in life is making things go boom in the biggest way possible.)  However, I think if they wanted to bring back G1 characters they would want characters that are not essentially represented in the generation already.

It was hard to vote only for three!  I would buy EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE if they were made into G4's.  I voted for Moondancer, Medley, and Fizzy because they are some of my favorites, and they are fairly unique when compared to the G4 line.

Yes I totally agree with you. I would love for them all if I could. I would love to see Hasbro make these. But then I am not going to hold my breath on it either.
