Trader & Shipping Support / Craigslist apprehensions
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:32:50 PM »
So the other day I found a Craigslist ad for a group of 70+ G1s being sold in LA for $45. Seller says: "Bad memories for me, could be good for you" to explain the price, and their name under the Craigslist contact banner is "Bronie Joe".

I email to ask if they're still available and a bit over 24 hours later this person emails me to say "Let's discuss - please call me" and lists a Philadelphia landline, signing off this time as "Brony Joe". The Craigslist ad has now been taken down.

I don't know why exactly, but this is setting off "weird!" alarms in my head. Has anyone dealt with this kind of thing before? I figure some bronies are sort of secretive, so there might be a reasonable explanation for this behaviour, but if you're so cagey why would you request a phone call instead of an email...?

I emailed back to ask if this person is based in LA or Philly but given how slow they were to respond last time I'm doubtful I'll get a reply any time soon. I can't figure out what the scam would be, I'm just kind of hesitant to call.

@Skyline - interesting o.O. Do you remember if your friend in the neighbourhood had dragons or bushwoolies or neither of the above with her princesses?

That is a great question, and one I often wracked my brain about when I started re-collecting in the early 2000s. I could never make up my mind. Both felt familiar, but I couldn't remember if the bushwoolie memory came from Quest of The Princess Ponies, and the dragon memory from brochures. I think the reality is that by the time I hung out with her and played with her ponies she had lost most of the accessories, so it's impossible to know if they were US or UK release. I WANT to say UK, but that feels very un-scientific.

For what it's worth: I grew up in Australia, but my grandmother lived in Johannesburg my whole childhood, and we would visit her at least once a year for the bulk of the 90s. She bought me MANY ponies from local sources, but the ones I remember most clearly were First Tooth Baby Ponies - she loved spoiling me and my sister, and some of my best memories of her & her house were opening the cupboards in the guest room that she would stash with presents for us. For sure she gave me FT Baby Lickety Split, FT Baby Fifi, FT Baby Bouncy, and FT Baby North Star, but I'm pretty sure there were others as well.

I also distinctly remember a friend in the neighbourhood who had a lot of first group princess ponies (Princess Sparkle stands out in my memory), and the Dance N Prance puzzle...

Funnily enough, though we would go to department & toy stores, I have absolutely zero recollection of these Nirvana variants. All my experiences with MLP in South Africa were later release official ponies I had seen on backcards & in catalogues elsewhere. The local kids' TV station, K-TV, had My Little Pony N Friends on high rotation.

Pony Corral / Re: Did you have any rare ponies as a kid?

In Australia we had a lot of the later UK ponies.  At least at the stage when I was at the age to collect.

Yep, this! My sister is four years older than me so I inherited a lot of her earlier gems, but then I had plenty of Y8/9/10 - Dazzeglow, Diamond Dreams, fancy mermaid babies, Secret Beauty, Sheertrimmer (who I LOVED so much), Chocolate Delight, UK Princess Sparkle... apart from the latter two the rest continue to evade me  :stressed:

Never seen this one! When I was a kid I used to wish and wish for the Petite snow cone/popcorn (I think? Definitely snow cone) set that was shown in all the pamphlets. I think it took me many years to realise it was never made.
