Title: How do you really feel about pumpkin spice?
Post by: dragonfly on September 27, 2017, 05:48:55 PM
Every autumn, people here in the USA go bonkers over pumpkin spice flavored and scented EVERYTHING. From coffee to candles.
People have very strong feelings about it!
What are yours?

I love pumpkin flavor in general but I don't go nuts for it. Pumpkin spice lattes, I've had a few, not my thing. But bring on the pumpkin pie, that's been a fave since I was a kid.

I love the smell of pumpkin spice.  But I love a lot of other scents as well.  For instance, rose and apple.  A little more variety wouldn't be a bad thing.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT.
Why is this a thing? Pumpkin is a vegetable! Why put it in Coffee? Are all Americans mad?

We're all mad here.

I once tried pumpkin soup. Thought it'd be gross, but it was surprisingly scrummy.

I like Pumpkin Spice Cheerios. Don't think I've really ever had any other product with it in it (aside from the obvious pumpkin bread and pie). I mean, I don't drink coffee or whatever it's normally put in that people love.

I gave it an open minded try when I worked at Starbucks. Nasty.

I like pumpkin as a vegetable, in soups, stews, pies, pickled, ...
Never tried anything pumpkin spiced though, and I doubt I ever will. As a coffee flavor, it just sounds so wrong!

Depends on what it is, I suppose. Some things will work better with the flavor than others. I'm not a coffee person so I can't say anything about pumpkin spice coffee since I've never had it and never want to. I had a pumpkin spice cupcake at a local cafe a couple weeks ago and it was pretty nice. It worked really nicely in a cupcake.

To be "that person", pumpkin's a fruit, not a vegetable, because it's got seeds in it!

I tried it one year at Starbucks, it was OK, very sweet and I could certainly sense that pumpkin flavour!

Tip for those who can't get enough: do a search for Monin Syrups - so many flavours (I have popcorn as well as pecan caramel from a sugar-free alternate syrup company) perfect to pour over porridge, icecream, hot chocolate....

haha! pumpkin soup is delicious. I like pumpkin as a vegetable but I have to admit I don't get the hype for the flavor. If I'm going to have a sugary coffee, then I think I prefer the gingerbread one.

I'm not sure if pumpkin spice is something specific, if so, I've never had it (but I'd love to try). I do love everything pumpkin though! I also have a perfume stick that claims to be pumpkin scented. It's a lovely smell, but I don't think it's really pumpkin scented...

wheres the 'I like it and will have a few things during fall but other then tea I don't go bonkers' option?

I will take advantage of pumpkin puree though in cooking and baking in the fall and winter months.  But that's different.

Never heard of it - that option wasn;t on the poll. From Glitterball's post it sounds like it has got here but I don't drink tea/coffee so *shrug*.

I had a pumpkin spice latte once, a couple of years ago. It was... okay. To be honest, I don't remember much about it, only that the friend I was with made a big fuss about me trying it. I don't recall either liking or disliking it. I haven't been tempted to try it again since.

I really like it! Especially in food. I love pumpkin pies, cookies, lattes, etc.

I've never had it, but from this talk of it being sweet, I'll probably steer clear. Things with spicy scents are always good though, so I might give pumpkin spice candles a whirl sometime. :)

I agree that there should be an option between loving it and indifference; myself I like pumpkin pie (more than berry ones, actually, I don't like bits of mushy fruit in my food) and I've had it as a tea as well and liked it well enough, I'd probably like some other things flavoured with it, but not everything and sceneted candles/air fresheners seem like a bit much

I could not be less of a fan of it. I don't see why when fall comes there has to be pumpkin spice /everything/

I'm not a fan of pumpkin flavored things, nor do I like the smell of it so every year when this happens I'm like  :nope: :X

IN pumpkin it's fine.  However it gets excessive every year with wacky marketing.  :(

Eww gross on my behalf , and WHY DO WE HAVE TO PUT IN IN EVERYTHING!!  Seriously stop please, I would be fine with candles, and coffee stuff and that is about it.

No idea what it's supposed to smell or taste like, never tried it. I am curious though. I don't drink coffee, and scented candles can give me a headache and nausea if they have the wrong thing in them.

We eat pumpkins as a savoury vegetable over here. Pumpkin soup is not as popular as butternut soup but that is on every menu as it is very popular. I have never tried pumpkin spice, and would seriously love to try pumpkin pie  :)

However if pumpkin spice flavoured coffee is sweet then I think I will pass. I love (love!) coffee but not with sugar in it - yuck.

"Pumpkin" spice is mostly a mix of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg which is why it actually tastes very little like real pumpkin.

I've only ever tasted homemade pumpkin spice, following a recipe online - it's essentially just a blend of spices, right? Just like Pokey said. Though I assume the pumpkin spice you find everywhere in the US is an artificial flavour? Those always divide opinions, I cannot stand cherry flavour for example, but I have no issue with fresh cherries.

We tried making our own pumpkin spiced lattes too last year: pureed pumpkin (or butternut squash in our case), coffee, hot milk, sugar, and the spice blend. It was very nice! :awake: Probably not even close to what you get at Starbucks but I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing, lol.

I'd love to try pumpkin pie, too. In fact, I just realized I've probably never tried pumpkin as in the round variety, butternut squash is what I typically use for soups and such. Last weekend I made pancakes with leftover squash. Yummy!

Mmm, pumpkin pie spice.  I'm a big fan of it!  Yeah, it's a mixture of cloves, cinnamon, ginger (?), and nutmeg.

It tends to be in things I can't eat (Coeliac here)

Now this is helpful! And it sounds good, too. :D I never knew exactly what it was, I guess it's just not as known here (except at Starbucks probably, but I stay away from there, I just don't like that business).

Ew...that's it

I like the candle scent just a tiny bit. Too much is overpowering and nauseating. I think mainly this is because always had this scent of candle in any decorative candle holder she owned. So, it is nostalgic but sickening all the same.

As far as the flavor, I am not one for the "baking spices" other than cinnamon, lobe cinnamon. It's just gone ridiculously overboard in the US. EVERYTHING seems to come flavored like this as soon as August gets to its end. Pumpkin Spice Oreos, Cheerios, Greenies, Hershey Kisses, oatmeal, baking bits, coffee, Life cereal, Peeps, peanut butter, Chex cereal, yogurt, cookies, marshmallows, pudding, beer, M&Ms....omg and the list continues. It's actually disturbing all the things, all due to marketing.

My husband and I always joke that every pumpkin spice thing should include a pair of Ugg boots, and a pair of sweatpants with something written across the butt. And when I find new products, I send him a photo. It's become such a thing that you can find tons of spoofs if you search it online:
Spoiler
just saw a spoof Trojan condom in PS, I guess if your SO is into that...
Sorry to those not in the US, probably doesn't make sense.

I don't care for pumpkin pie either, but I do like a stew that we make that is made in a pumpkin, and you scrape some out with the stew. My pup likes pumpkin too, pumpkin cinnamon treats, and canned pumpkin if she is refusing to eat or has tummy upset. Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin is my favorite autumn scent from Bath and Body Works!

Pumpkin spice is my best friend. Pumpkin spice hot chocolate is my favorite thing :)
Every year, I stock up on International Delight pumpkin spice creamers for my hot chocolate for the winter season to come.
I also love pumpkin spice Tasty Cake mini donuts and pumpkin spice Keebler's fudge striped cookies  :)
Pumpkin spice is love. Yum!
