Customs / Re: More stolen pictures of custom ponies?

Thank you to those who found this, have reported, and have contacted those of us that have had our art stolen.  Really obnoxious.

Katsilk is very nice for smooth, flowing hair, but if you want some sort of shape to the hair, there's nothing you can do to make it keep it.  It's just not part of what the hair is good for.  Even if you can make it stay temporarily, it won't stay long term.  People have tried and failed for years.  :/

Sounds good to me!  I'm not sure if my kids are old enough to really appreciate the sort of games they have there yet, so having the main portion first is definitely preferable for me.

Cover as much of the pony as you can so that the paint doesn't get wet, get the hair in place how you want it with rubber bands or whatever, then /pour/ the boiling water over it.  Just dipping the hair in the water doesn't do the trick, partly because it's not getting the roots.  The stiffer hair can take some work to get it right, but I'm pretty sure nothing is harder to get to lay down than kanekalon and pouring boiling water does the trick every time.

Just as a side note, in the future when you're painting with a custom blend, get a baby food jar, make plenty of the blend inside of that, and then put plastic wrap on the top before sealing the lid.  Throwing some retardent in there doesn't hurt too.  This will keep paint fresh for a fair amount of time and that way if you need to do touchups, you don't end up with matching problems.

Don't use sculpey if you have any animals in the house with sensitive respiratory systems like birds.  Other than that, though, it's fine to use in your usual oven.  If you're worried about it, though, you can also do it in a toaster oven.  I don't know about your area, but it's possible to get cheap toaster ovens for $30 or less each here.

Customs / Re: Help with shaky hands
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:06:28 PM »
Everyone shakes.  What you have to do is brace yourself to minimize it and to make sure everything shakes in the same direction.  You should brace your forearms or elbows against your work surface.  Then brace your wrists together as you paint.  If you can't keep your wrists together while still getting at the area you need to, make sure both wrists are braced on the pony so they're "connected" by it.  It's a bit awkward at first, but it makes a big difference.  This is what the model railroaders do and they paint on surfaces that make our ponies look huge.

I'm rather astonished by how few G1 customs I've actually finished.  I have tons of baits and things in various stages of progress!

I did Red XIII here with a cat-like tail.

Or I did Moochi here, based off a real cat for what a cat might look like with a typical pony tail:

I'm glad I wasn't crazy thinking this had been done but I am sorry to hear the long term results aren't good.

Customs / Re: blending doll hair
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:13:13 PM »
The best option is just to request a blend from Tina.  She can do custom blends with any colors that are in stock.  If it's stuff you've already got around, the others have some good tips, but for future projects, keep the ordering option in mind!

Customs / Re: fabric winged starcatcher wing removal

Oh dear!!  I was planning to use one to make an alicorn.  Am I going to be able to take the head/tail off without ruining her?

From what I remember, you're not going to be able to change her tail without some destruction involved.  That doesn't mean you have to remove everything, the custom I did still has her wings (see my avatar), but she won't be as sturdy.  Customs just aren't, though, so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Hmm, I think the only one I've done with skulls is this early commission I did:

I'm pretty sure I used a hammer too.  There was much violence and swearing involved to be sure.
