I just got a very nice Li'l Sweetcake for a pretty good price, yay! Her condition is great, but she has the beginnings of tail rust. I've heard that toothpaste is good for cleaning rust, so I'd like to try it by removing her head and cleaning inside. Sweetcake is a Peek-a-Boo Baby, so she doesn't have a neck seal since her head is designed to turn. Can I just pop it off? Will I be able to pop it back in without causing any damage? Sweetcake is a fairly hard-to-find mail order G1 (she's one of the little unicorn sisters), so I don't want to risk damaging her. The rust is quite minor and I could actually live with it.

I wouldn't pop her head off if its avoidable, if you clean around the tail hole with some toothpaste then condition the tail, this would probably help get rid of visible rust signs, however, if it really bothers you alot, I would see if someone more experienced would be willing to pop her head off & give her a proper clean for you, with a normal pony I would say tackle it yourself, but I know how much sweetcake is worth, would hate to see you accidentally damage her over a bit of tail rust :) Good luck however, and congrats on scoring her for a good price! Her & her sister are quiet a rare find.

I'd practice on a few baits first before tackling such a expensive pony

But if it's not too bad I'd try to get it from the outside first.

The rust can eat away at the inside of her body if it's left untreated from what I heard.
I would just go for it.

You can removed her head without damage. I've done it several times with PAB ponies.
Just be careful and she will be fine!

It's a tough call to make with her being a MO. I'd treat the tail from the outside first like others have said.
