So in the last 5 months I have bought 32 pre-owned G1 ponies from a swap meet. I have never gotten so many G1's like this before and as I have been looking up the information on them it made me wonder how everyone collects their ponies. Is it enough just to have the pony? Do you need the brush too? Must you have all the accessories/pieces it originally came with? Do you need the box/backcard?
For me, at this point I think I am good with just having the pony. I never find G1's, so suddenly being able to get them has been enjoyable. Cleaning them up hasn't been too bad (but I am picky about what I buy when I pick them out) and it has been fun to see them all cleaned up and styled on display.
I also started to keep a list of which ones were bought pre-owned, and I will admit to saving pictures of the backcards/boxes from mylittlewiki.
How about you?

I'm fine with just having the pony, to me having the accessories and box is extra. I would definitely have everyone's back card/box if I could, but that would take some effort and money. I would like to have some accessories like newborn accessories and playset accessories but that's it.

I’m fine with just the pony but I like to have the back cards for any super special ponies or sets. I’m not bothered about the other stuff really.

I'll be more likely to buy a pony if it has its brush and ribbon. They complete the look to me as hasbro was quite clever in making the color scheme so harmonious back then

I like buying lots of beat up ones at once and fixing them up best.

Pony accessories are awesome, but I literally would not know what to do with all the brushes and combs if I had one for every pony I collect. I have a couple random combs / brushes but I'm definitely not a completionist when it comes to those or the other accessories.
I do love backcards and I'd love to have one for every pony I collect, but it's also not something I 'have' to have when getting a pony.

My answer actually isn't in your poll xD
I collect accessories haphazardly. Some I want more than others, and I have a whole bag of ribbons but unless I am sure, I don't necessarily assign them to the pony. If I had a lot of time and money and space I would like to have the brush/comb for all of my ponies but it isn't practical. Some ponies I have MIP simply because it's easier than chasing down the accessories loose (ie some newborn twins and 2nd set princesses, whose accessories are either costly or fiddly to get or both)
But for me the most important thing to go with a pony would be the backcard. I don't say that I set out to get every card to go with each pony. My card collection is a separate and precious part of my collection that has equal status to the ponies, really. So if I had to choose a must have thing to go with my ponies, it would be the cards more than the combs :)
So backcards not brushes for me if I have to choose.

I stick too just ponies, i'm too poor for much else xD I dont quite understand the original ribbon thing, surely a lot of craft shops sell ribbons of similar colours and thickness to the original G1 ribbons?

I guess it depends on your perspective. I don't ever try to replace ribbon with other newer stuff because my ponies mostly don't wear ribbons in their tails unless I know it belongs to them - so it's really not that big a deal to me. I like to keep every ribbon I get in a bag because they probably account for about 1/3 of my ponies but because they fade, it's not worth chasing up and trying to match them exactly unless they're distinct for me.
But...I am of the persuasion that I don't do replica. I don't do replica ribbons, wings, anything. I don't do rehair, repaint, or any of that either. So for me it's real ribbons or no ribbons. Not that there's anything wrong with replica ribbons. I just don't like replica.
The ONLY exception I have is a replica shell for Sea Breeze because after 20 years of her leaning up against the wall and falling over, I got fed up and gave up and got her one from ponycon a year or two ago...but that's it. A functional means to prevent eternal face-planting ;)

I'm happy with just having the pony, most likely because that's what my sister and I had as kids. We had a couple of brushes but as an adult, I'm not overly fussy about accessories. I like displaying my ponies along with other toys as well, it's nice to have a display that looks eclectic but has been carefully thought out; it's a bit easier to achieve that when you're not having to factor in accessories.

I'm happy with just the pony. Ribbons and bandanas can be replaced with whatever I like and the only pony I want with accessories and in this case Bushwoolie is Princess Tiffany. She's the last childhood pegasus I need.

I normally collect just the ponies, unless the accessory is an important part of the pony.
eg. Soda sipping pony sundaes, big brother hats, nurse hats, that sort of stuff :)

I'm fine with only the pony, but I'd be so happy to get their accessories too, or even better : MOC pony. :D
I'm especially a huge fan of the ribbons but I have only one so far out of my 184 ponies. Well, that's something I suppose. :lol:

I'm usually after just the pony but if a pony comes to me with a ribbon still in their tail, I keep it in. The only childhood pony that still has almost all her original accessories is my Princess Serena/Aquamarine. She is only missing her tail ribbon. I also bought a near mint Princes Tiffany off of Ebay years ago and she came with all her accessories even her tail ribbon and comb. :) I have a Baby Cotton Candy that was a gift from a friend and she came with her diaper/diaper box playpen, bottle and necklace I have Baby Moondancer's bottle necklace and rocker also.
I'd love to have more backcards or at least replace my childhood ones but to me it's more about the pony.
To me the original accessories are usually a bonus unless it's a pony like the Soda Sippin ponies.

I'm usually fine with just the pony, but when I have the opportunity to buy a pony with a comb, ribbon, or any other accessory for a good price I'll buy it. There are some ponies I'd like the ribbons and combs for, but I don't go out of my way to find them. I'm not too big on backcards.

It's all about the pony for me - but I am not a completionist at all, not even worried about getting full sets, just the ponies I like.
If the accessories come with them then that's nice and I keep them safe.

When thrift store shopping I have found accessories on the same trips as finding G1 MLP ponies like.... once. Once ever. Actually I don't find accessories all that often. :(
I LOVE accessories but I don't have many really. So I mostly collect loose ponies.
Ribbons I am honestly meh about, only because one can go to the store and buy all kinds of awesome ribbon there too. It doesn't HAVE to be original with me...

I am mainly here for the ponies, I really dont care for comb or brushes they came with, but I do like the barrettes, stuff that came with baby ponies. As well as things like the wands that came with the princess ponies, it all depends on what they came with.

I'm totally fine with just having the pony, but if I can get my hands on the matching brush or other accessories, I will ^^ I don't display them together necessarily, but in separate labeled bags for each pony/set because I'm a sucker for organizing stuff xD

Fine with just the pony itself, but having accessories is always a nice bonus when it happens!

I'm generally just good with the pony. I will keep the accessories if I happen to come across them though. The only accessories I've really hunted down was to complete my Lullaby Nursery set.

If it can't be worn, I don't go out of my way for it. If it can't be used as a prop in a photo (i.e. duck pull toy, pillow) I don't care at all. I like wearable accessories but don't usually care what came with whom, though big Brothers' and princess ponies' hats are the exception sometimes.

Ponies only! I like to display my collection, and I'd end up loosing the brushes.

The Soda Sippins have fantastic accessories. I wouldn't accept a Roller Skater without them either.
Oh and I want a baby sea pony with her floatie.

Just the pony is all I need. I have accessories with my G3s but I can do without them, especially Balloon Flying Merriweather's balloon which is always playing music because I keep bumping it when I sift through my closet.

Mostly I just want to buy the pony, but I consider it a great bonus if it comes with original accessories like brushes or hair clips. If it comes with the original backcard or box then all the better. Recently have been buying up big lots of brushes and combs, I love how they look displayed in a large decorative glass jar which all the beautiful colours jumbled together.

Just the pony for me, especially since I mostly buy baity ponies for restoration. Ribbons can be replaced by ribbon from the local craft shop (all ponies must have a ribbon. I like ribbon a lot). I will buy accessories if it's something the ponies can wear or use as a prop in photos, but I don't mind about matching it up to the correct pony, e.g. Baby Dibbles has currently adopted the pull-along duck but I'm pretty sure it's not hers originally.
For some reason I have a bag of random combs and brushes. No idea why. I'm always meaning to sort them out.
Backcards and boxes are fun and interesting, but I only have two. I couldn't justify the expense of collecting them, and I'm not sure where I would keep them. If I had lots of money and space, I might collect the backcards for all my favourite ponies (I have about 50 favourite ponies; they get to live on a bookcase while the others live in a cupboard) and have a folder of them, probably in chronological order....but a lot of my favourite ponies are UK/European ponies, or Argentinian/Brazilian/Mexican, so I think collecting backcards would be very expensive and/or completely impossible! So I'll stick to looking at pictures online.

I am actually perfectly happy with just the pony, but if that pony were to come with their original ribbon then it's Christmas all over again. I really love original ribbons but so much! However, if I don't have the original ribbon for a pony in my herd - and let's be honest, that is most of them - I will give them a replacement one. All ponies deserve ribbons.

I think price plays a part in that as well. I mean, I still want to know who the crazy people were that drove sweetie baby clips up to $100ish each when they're just cheap monocolour plastic. (And I'm annoyed naynie still can't find hers, grr).
BB hats and bandanas are some of the nicer accessories I think. Also princess wands, hats and attendants.

Most of the time I can do without the accessories. If I get the pony with their accessories, that's a bonus! I know I was lucky enough to get some ponies with their original bows. I don't really care too much about every pony having a bow right now, but in the future when I have my collection more finalized, I'll hunt a replacement ribbon for them.
The ponies I would really love to have accessories would be the first set of princess ponies. Specifically the wands and little hat thingies. (I can't remember what they're called at the moment :blush: )
Now I wouldn't mind having Tex and Wigwam's hats but I don't need them.
I'm pretty passing on items since I usually have items that could work as well or I don't really want the pony that needs a certain item.
Although if a pony came with a pet (ex. Peachy's cat) then I would like to have that as well, but it's not needed.
HOWEVER playsets are a different story since I like to have all the accessories. The box would be nice for storage, but not needed. Playsets I'd like to have 85% complete or higher.

I’m just after the pony. However I do collect accessories, just not as often. I don’t care if my ponies are missing theirs. (Most of my ponies are baits— they need love too!) :heart: it also makes it easier on my wallet. Most of my herd comes from the flea market or the thrift, and since accessories are so often lost, they don’t show up as frequently, making them more expensive for me to add to my herd :)

I used to not care about accessories. Then I stared collecting G2 either complete or moc since they are newer. So getting G2's with their accessories carried over to G1. I found out G1 ponies have some super cute accessories too.
I don't care about ribbons or combs so much. I do want the special accessories though like barrettes, dance n prance pony accessories, ballerina accessories, newborn twin accessories, guitars for the Rockin Beats. Basically anything that's special. I think they really add to the pony. I now feel some ponies seem really incomplete without them.
Some sets I only really want the main accessories. Like for the 2nd edition princesses I just want the crown clip. The wand and comb would be nice but I can live without it. I also don't mind repros.
I would also like to get at least one moc/mib pony or backcard from each set. Eventually! lol

That is a neat idea actually. Never thought about putting toys or accessories into decorative jars. I kind of agree with some of the comments about the big brother accessories. They might be nice to have eventually, but honestly I was just lucky to find two big brothers at all (Steamer and Wigwam) . Same with the princess ponies in regards to the damsel hat and wand. One of the ones I did get recently was Princess Tiffany and her Bushwoolie Friendly. Having the pair made it more of a set for me than if she was alone. I might like to get her wand and damsel hat though eventually. I have Princess Primrose from my childhood so for now they can share.

It's not the brushes I need, it's the barrettes...and sometimes the ribbons. I love pony accessories, but have (mostly) restricted myself to the princess's.

I don't hunt accessories, but i like when i have them and can display them with the ponies, like all the accessories for my baby buggy or the hats, wands and combs for princess Serena and Starburst

I think I wouldnt mind a few key accessories If I am collecting. Example: I want the newborn baby accessories because they are so super cute. I got to the point where I can go back or upgrade a pony I want. Or I can go after their accessories I like to. I think It depends on the set if I like to.

I have a drawer full of accessories that don't seem to match the ponies that i have. I have UK releases primarily plus some unique USA German and one Dutch pony. I have not tackled the problem and with so few G1s remaining on my wish list i should probably match them up and pass on my spares for other people to enjoy. I mix up genuine accessories with Care Bears and Fairytale Birds, intergenerational fun and random ribbons, cocktail umbrellas, random stuff. I'm really keen to have more Sweetheart Sister and Brush n Grow accessories and to finish my Perfume Puff Palace.

I want all the stuff too, including backcard and puffy sticker. I don’t however buy that many ponies- I only currently have around 35 ponies. Most of them childhoods. I do have a «core collection» which I collect everything for. But I do admit that some of the outlier ponies dont have all their stuff and I’m not currently looking for it either... I would however rather complete a pony with all its accessories than buy a lot more ponies...;-)
