Hair Tinsel - Where do you get yours?
« on: June 06, 2014, 10:36:43 AM »
So I'm looking to start putting tinsel in my pony hair when I'm rerooting, but I hav no experience with it and I'd like to know what other people use - and where you buy it.

I noticed Retrodoll has hair mixed with tinsel, and then just hanks of tinsel (although I don't see where you can actually buy the straight tinsel?).

Anyway, I assume I want to use something pretty fine, but I'm not sure which seller to look at.  Any recommendations?

I use Sulky brand metallic embroidery thread from Joann Fabrics. It comes on a spool but is not too difficult to work with. I believe it is this stuff. (I have only purchased it in store.)

I believe Fizz (?) hair would be another option, for a similar effect. I have never used it though. There are some good examples of that in the alternate re-hair thread. :)

I've been thinking of trying Angelina Fantasy Fibers.  Has anyone used this for tinsel before?  I really like the fantasy film and the fibers come in so many nice colors, but they are bunched up in a bag so I wonder if they would be wrinkly-crinkly and impossible to use.

I use blending filament. http://www.kreinik.com/shops/Blending-Filament.html I've found it at a local craft store. It does have a bit of "thread" that you have to separate from the tinsel itself.
Ponies I've used it on:

This stuff is quite thin (based on pic 1 you can barely see it in her hair). I've found it holds up quite well with how I root (pulling up through the head). Considering the lengths of it that I've used I've done the CP adult and the short-haired baby with just one spool.

I also use embroidery floss/tinsel that I found at a thrift shop... honestly, you'd be amazed by what you can find at second hand stores sometimes...

I picked up a spool of this from Hancock fabrics today.  I really like that it's very fine.  The downside to me is that it's on a spool and I have to pull and measure out a length.  And if I need a whoole lot of it, then that could get tedious.  I'm thinking of setting up a peg system to get several lengths with less effort.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been thinking of trying Angelina Fantasy Fibers.

I really like the way this looks and the variety of colors it comes in.  I'd be interested to know if someone else has used this... I'm saving this link for later.
