Eeks!!! Look what happened to my ponies!!!
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:53:04 AM »
My ponies have been long in storage(like 5 years?), but recently I have actively taking them out to inventorise on my Wordpress site (FINALLY!). Much to my dismay a lot of my ponies have developed spots, mold and discolourations - some are for the better, some are painfully for the worse. I'm awfully upset about my Locket since she was in very good condition when I first bought her, but now she has 3 huge neon pink spots on her. :(

I feel so ...discouraged, especially since I made an effort to preserve my ponies properly in ziplocks and in storages that are cool and dry. I didn't think they would deterioate in there.

Anyway these are the unpleasant surprises I got when I took out my ponies:

Moldy .... luckily washable, but still GROSS! I hope they're not penicilin :P cos I've killed them all with Dettol. lol Funny, coz I think I coated Pinwheel a light layer of lotion before she went into storage a year ago....omgz fungus like to eat lotion?

Good thing this is washable too. No permernant damage on Snuzzle, still kind of awful though.  A few ponies came out having brittle hair too :(

I obtained a few MLPs that looked like the first one! They stunk & needed a good bath. I haven't even touched 2 because they look so shlummy.

Aww, that is so frustrating, especially since you took extra care so this wouldn't happen.

Good luck with cleaning them up.

I wonder if it was possible the little bit of moisture on them mixed with a little bit of mold and bacteria, and spawned new growth.

So I wonder what is worse for the pony, leaving ponies to the air, or sealing them up in packages?

Omg!! I had a very similar problem with my ponies! Mine were in storage for a similar amount of time however mine were kept in a big plastic bag! Eep! But! There were no major issues. A few spots of mold that's it. However when I moved house I transported them all in a luggage holder and they were left in that and quite tightly packed. I was soo stupid! Some of my beloved ponies had got black faint ink streaks were the casing had obviously imprinted on their vinyl!!! I was absoutely distraught! Funnily enough, I also had a mint Locker that got marked up very badly :-(. I think though, they fade easily un sun so going to try that as soon as some sun hits the UK ;-)

I think its better leaving the ponies in to the air, I threw my ponies into our shed for storage for like a half year or something in a plastic bag and they were fresh and dandy when i got them out.

Bread tend to mold if you seal it and don't put it into the freezer, and I'm guessing that thats exactly the same effect here...
I'm so sorry that it happened to you... I hope you can fix them up.

So sorry dear :(

Basically this is why I don't ever store ponies in ziplock bags. Plastic needs to air, without fresh air mold and such develop so much easier :( I've seen this happen on gen2 ponies with horrible plastic quality, but it affects other ponies, too, apparently.

I hope you can get them fixed!

Oh my goodness GC! Thats a terrible surprise!! I hope you manage to get them cleaned up ok for the most. It wouldnt have mattered how you stored Locket unfortunately - if she was going to get regrind...she would have got it in a hermetically sealed vault :P

Good luck! And sending virtual pony hugs your way!!!

probably best would be ziplock them in and then take a hole punch and punch the bag in all 4 corners..thus letting air in and out but not much else

I am so sorry. I don't pack mine in ziplock bags because of this.  If you must use a bag...what I do is put the bag empty on top of felt fabric and use a needle and punch tiny holes all over the bag and add a bag of de-humid pellets you can get for free in your new purses or shoe boxes.  Also its a good idea to wrap the hair in acid free tissue paper to avoid it staining the pony skin.  I have ruined some ponies too...its really a very disappointing thing to have happen. It really hurts.  I feel for you.

No! This is kind of why I'm nervous about the idea of storing any of my ponies, especially my G1s, out of sight.

Looks like it's pony spa time! Think of it as pampering them a bit!
