MLPArena Card Swap 2012
Get those pens and cards ready - IT'S CARD SWAP TIME!
The annual card swap is back for its 7th year.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Everyone and anyone can join. Participants will be put into groups of approx 8-10.
Group A will send to Group B, B will send to C, etc. That means you will send and receive 8-10 cards.
The number of groups, and number of participants per group, depends on the number of participants.

**RULES & Things to keep in mind:
1: Each group will have a variety of addresses - USA, Canada, Europe, etc. If you cannot send cards overseas, do not join. You should plan to spend at least $20-$30 for cards and mailing.
2: You may get a variety of cards - various holidays, traditions, cultures, and religions. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not join.
3: If at any point you run into trouble or delays, PM me ASAP.
4: You MUST include your Arena username when you sign your card, so the person receiving your card knows who you are! Make sure your username is legible.
5: Cards can be store bought, hand made, computer print-outs - whatever you want. They don't even have to be pony-related.
6: You must let me know [via PM] when you have mailed your cards.
7: You must let me know [via PM] when you receive cards and from who.
8: You must ship within the set deadline.
9: All members are expected to actively participate in the swap threads. This includes posting in the Partner Interest Thread.

**Requirements to join: have been here at least 3 months with a post count of 100 posts or higher
(ie - must have joined August 2012 or earlier)
No - I will not deviate from these requirements, please do not ask. I will not respond to those messages.
If you don't have enough posts yet, start posting. There is a full couple of weeks of sign-ups. If you don't have long enough membership, hopefully you will join us next year.
NOTE: This swap does not count towards your swap limits.

**How to join: Please PM me (ArenaHunt) to let me know you want to join.
IMPORTANT: All participants will be required to fill out a questionnaire upon joining to ensure that you understand ALL the requirements of the swap. All questionnaires must be received no later than Nov 9. If your questionnaire is not received by that time, you will not be included in the swap.
NOTE: The questionnaire will also ask for your mailing address. Please ensure that all your info is correct and fully complete - it is not my responsibility to track you down for countries, zip/postal codes, last names, etc.

**Last day to join: November 5.
Please take this as seriously as you would any other swap. Once I have sent the group lists out - you cannot drop out. If you have any doubts about being able to fulfill your requirement, don't join.

**I will have the group lists out to all participants the weekend after the join deadline (Nov 10-11). That will give you a month to shop and fill out your cards.
NEW: This year the initial lists will contain only usernames and countries. This is due to numerous participants last year shipping early with no communication.
The secret swap word is mohawk. Make sure you have this word ready for your questionnaire.

**Card Mailing:
All cards are to be mailed between December 5 and December 15.
Address lists will be sent out in the week of Nov 26-30. That gives you a week to address your envelopes for mailing.

**Feedback:
Feedback will be left by me upon completion of the swap. Feedback will be based on communication, mailing within the deadline, following of the rules, participation in swap threads, etc.

**Swap Timelines:
now-Nov 5 - sign ups open
Nov 6 - sign ups closed
Nov 9 - all questionnaires must be received
Nov 10-11 - group lists PMs to participants
Nov 12-25 - participants shop and fill out cards
Nov 26-30 - addresses will be sent to all participants
Dec 1-4 - participants address envelopes and get ready to mail
Dec 5-15 - mailing dates, all cards mailed

It's always fun to get holiday cards in the mail! This way you'll be guaranteed a lot of mail, and a lot of fun. :) And we all have the fun of sending out cards and getting to know each other a little better. :D

Wow! 25 potential participants already :D Hopefully we can get at least 3 full groups.

I've got as many questionnaires out as I can. Once my hour resets I'll get the rest sent out ;)


Regarding the Secret Word & Questionnaires
I hope the instructions are clear enough for everyone. I've had some people either not understanding or not reading them already. :huh:
Also a reminder that the Card Swap has some of it's own rules, and does not necessarily follow the main Holiday Swaps.

That's what I am planning to do!  I might draw everyone a unique card. Or if there is no time for that I might draw one, scan it, and make copies into cards.

I'm just doing the one design, but if it comes out cute maybe I'll use it for my whole list. Considering I've had an art block for ages we will have to see...

Wow, I envy you guys with the artist talent to draw your own cards! I'm sure they will be wonderful! Mine are just regular store bought cards, but they are really cute, sparkly, and festive. (Yes, I've already bought my cards! *excited*)

Hehe thanks Mari & that is beautiful Ivy! Is that fake snow? I've actually been debating getting some.

I won't say too much about my card. It needs to be a surprise, but I'm doing my best to create three separate images to turn into cards. I dunno if I'm being over ambitious? I wonder if I can make that many tiny Santa hats and stockings in my spare time. :lookround:

Just sent my pm! I've been goofing off, one of these years I'm going to miss the deadline. :blush: I've said it before, but the card swap is the only time I look forward to checking the mail.  :biggrin:
I'm not expecting to really get into the Christmas spirit this year (long story), I hope this will help me along & give me some much needed holiday cheer.  :xmas:

Looks like we're going to have 36 swappers this year :) There's one more survey left to come in, but the person hasn't been on for 2 weeks, so I'm not hopeful. But to be fair, there's still 1 more day before the deadline.

What do members of the card swap think about repeat sends?

Meaning, if you are on one person's list for 2012, they keep your address for 2013 and onward?

I had this idea last year, but didn't get around to asking it.

Perhaps the swap moderator could add to the questionnaire (next year), and we could all PM her this year (if she wants, I am in no way trying to drown her out of mind with this) on those who are willing or unwilling.  Or, perhaps just write in our cards, 'you may keep my address' or something similar.

I had so much fun last year (and know I will this year!) doing this that I wouldn't mind just sending everyone a card!  Well... everyone willing, of course.  (Okay, so this may actually be cost restrictive too, depending on how many people sign up.)

Anyhow, just a thought!

I think if members choose to keep (or swap) addresses for future on their own, that's their choice. I know a number of members that keep addresses from transactions so they can keep contact with people they've worked with, and even send their own cards. :) That would be outside the swap. Just like members that hold private swaps with people they've swapped with before - thsoe are outside the swap. Plus it would be nearly a nightmare to keep that data from year to year - of who participants each year and what their preferences are.

It's a nice idea, but definitely something that is up to the individual to do themselves.

Hi all! Normally each year we have the Partner Interest Thread that's shared between the Card and Sock swaps.

To make things easier for us (and since the Sock swap won't be running this year), I've included the interest questions as part of this thread. They are at the bottom of the main post. Also, if anyone thinks of other questions that should be included, be sure to let me know and I can include those.

I'm sure I'll see everyone posting! ;)

Now that the lists are out I have to answer the big question...should I attempt to make my own cards or just send store bought??!!!!!  Grr, I can't decide!!  My head is going crazy with ideas, but I really can't spend too much money......I hate making decisions!!!   :shrug:

Mari, it is a card only swap.  Sometimes people include stickers, but that is up to the individual posting, it is certainly not required.

Favorite MLP?  I love g1 twinkler and baby pony.  I also have AJ and RD armies that span lots of gens.

Other tidbits of information?  I assume you mean about me, and you don't want to know something like the air-speed velocity of an african swallow.  Hmmm... I love doctor who, Harry Potter, True Blood among lots of things.  I like shiny things.  I'm addicted to scented and glow in the dark stuff.

Haha xeevee! You're so cute! Well, I suppose there's no rational explanation. Pretty sure the wolf thing comes from every child movies that made wolves evil with red eyes. As a result, I always had nightmares about them. The whale thing is more recent. I think because they're just REALLY large and kinda sneaky because they're these mammoth animals that can hide under the water and you have no idea they're there until they pop up! Hence the sneakiness. Like I said, not really a rational explanation!! :drunk:

It is semi-rational.  I can see why you might fear something that large coming up under you.  My friend felt the same way about manatees when we swam with them.  She had a panic attack in the water and had to get out.  Even though they are harmless it can be disconcerting to be directly above one.

Your winter holiday?  Yule, since I am pagan.  The same time period as Christmas, but remembering the holidays of ancient religions such as Norse Yule, Roman Saturnalia, etc.  The human element is the same:  giving, getting and good tidings.

Mari I vote for maybe printing the poem on some cute paper and putting it on the back if you do not want to redo your cards?

Of course it is okay!  :) 

Some of my cards are hand signed, and some have "© Marigold" because I thought I was going to fold the cards in half and that would be like the Hallmark symbol on the back of the card.  But when I fold the cards the middle gets all worn down looking.

Sorry I've been one of those absent ones!

I was planning on making my cards this week now that crazy family thanksgiving time is over, but my 11 month old baby got bronchiatus (I'm not sure that's how you spell it) and so we had a rough week. I started to make some cards yesterday while she was napping, and then realized that realistically I was not going to have time to make enough. So some of you will be getting handmade cards, and some of you will be getting store bought cards. And some of you will be getting storebought cards altered to be somewhat handmade. ;)

^ Oooh, oooh, me too!

I can draw slightly lousy G4 ponies, but I went with storebought cards rather than flaunting my lack of artistic talent.  (Though I'm further embarassed to say I never even thought of Photoshopping my cards... :doh:  Maybe next year's card swap - if I start early! :lol:)

:hug: I'm sure it'll be fine. I can draw but I don't think I'll have the time so mine might be store bought too.

Aww, I'm sorry I've tried to be decently active in here lately. I've just been busy with work, and the thread seemed quiet. I have addresses now though! I can fill out my cards hooray! :frolic:

I say don't feel bad anyone about non hand made cards. Mine I had done through Walmart, so mine will not be hand made either. I wanted to do nice handmade ones, but I lack the skills and the time. I think the exciting part is simply getting nice cards in the mail. I know since the wife, and I moved we have less cards from friends ect on the holidays. It will be nice to have some more again. ^.^

My husband is hating it.  It also didn't help that I wore a sparkly concert dress yesterday that spread more glitter around.  I will be vacuuming forever! And ever!

Aww I wanted to include little extras. I started making pony Santa hats for my cards, but I just felt I wouldn't get done. My mind wanders so easily.  That's very sweet though to include something.

I got ambitious this year everybody got a different card - usually I come up with a design and copy it multiple times... - But this year! Wow! - I've got them all inked now - just have to add color and they will be out in the mail tomorrow.

Wiccanpony, just look up the postcode on the Royal Mail postcode finder online. It's easy when you've got the rest of the address.

So I finally was able to get to the store for cardstock and I found a shimmery version! I am very excited. My hubby took it in this morning and is supposed to be printing it out for me today. :)

I also got my first two cards from xeevee and madhatterda today as well!

It seems the holidays are always time for a bit more stress. We're just having visits by the state everyday. I had someone that is in charge of like all the school districts of the state in my room the other day to view...talk about pressure. >_<

I thought instead of just saying I got cards from members I would show you guys! I have to say I really do appreciate the cards so far, and they cheer me up a great deal. Used to before the wife and I moved away for my job we had lots of friends/co-workers we would exchange cards and presents with. I would have them hanging all over the place, but it's not so much since we moved here. It's nice to have some cards from you guys to fill those sad blank walls.  Much love guys!

update time from me. After the hubby struggled with printing MS word came to the rescue and all my cards got printed today. I think they came out really cute and I really hope everyone will like them. So they are all written, addressed, and sealed. I'm leaving early tomorrow to get some stamps and they should be arriving in the mail soon.

I had fun drawing mine... in the end I just went with what came from the pencil at the last minute rather than the planned one.  Coloring was a lot of fun and I learned a great new way to caricature snowflakes.

Yeah the card got to you in Canada faster than the one's I mailed to neighboring states - well Canada is a neighbor... but still... Oh and the one got to CA before the one's in neighboring states.... now there is a conundrum.

And Ivy I about died when I saw Tornado on there, he looks so handsome!!! I have to say though I am a bit jelly on your drawing ability.  I have tried to draw a horse before and they always end up with thunder thighs and a bird face.

Scary that the cards got to Canada, California and the Netherlands before it reached you in Ohio Ponylady.

It was shimmer paper I happened across at michaels. I was in the card stock section and it was just sitting there and it felt a it sturdier than the plain white ones so I got it. I wasn't sure the ink would stick on top well but I didn't see any rubbing problems so I hope it arrived safely. I was really happy with how it turned out and might do home made cards with this paper for my whole mailing list next year. I'm so glad you liked it!

Due to some personal issues that crept up (mainly, insomnia and major stress regarding a school issue), I wasn't able to make it to the post office in time to mail my last two cards (going to the UK.)  Unfortunately, I'm not sure what the correct postage is for these two (though I have plenty of stamps), and I want to have the weight checked and have the correct amount of stamps on the envelope before it goes into the mail.  I'm very sorry to those two recipients, but the cards are going out on Monday, and I don't think there will be much of a delay if any at all (though I don't know.)  I did let ArenaHunt know; and, hopefully it will not adversely affect me, or the recipients.

I wish I could've been more creative with mine, but with customs I have to make and the craft fair I was doing I just didn't have time. But I love all the beautiful handmade cards ponies clearly worked so hard on! I also love the store bought ones, too! They're going to make a great collage on my door! The card from PrincessDianna1982 is a store bought one, but oh my god is it stunning.  I literally gasped and then swore when I took it out of the envelope (which matched btw).  I love it.

Wednesday night I was out to mail my mother's cards, and there were trucks heading out.  I think the post offices are doing their duties, it's just a good amount of mail to ship and deliver.

As for me, I did receive a card from Puuush and from Hathorcat.  Again, I will take a picture of them once I have all of them (which should be soon.  I need to count them, as I may have gotten close to if not all.)

May I ask if those who received cards from me liked their card pack and stickers?  Uhm, I'm not sure if this is correct in manners to post here, but...  I'm curious.  I like hearing back from people. :P

I think I received my final two cards this week :( sad to see the mail stopping especially since we didn't get many Christmas cards from family and friends this year. 

I received two more beautiful cards though, one from Hilamb and one from PrincessDiana.  All the cards are so lovely this year (not that they aren't always, they just seem extra pretty).  I will try to get a picture of them all together this weekend!

Depending on where you live, it could be a while.  Some people are slower than others.  Granted I said that I think the post offices are doing their job, I was thinking that some may either not be or not as quick as others.  I had some international mail (albeit, this was years ago, so this may be a moot issue now) that honestly took a month or more, and that was just to Canada!  *hugs* I would give it a little bit more time, though I know it's heart-wrenching and frustrating.

Glad people have been getting my cards!!!  And liking them too!!!!!  I'm sad I had to go store bought, but unfortunately, my life has taken a crappy turn these days & I couldn't spend the money I would have liked!  If I will be allowed to do this next year, I am so going to do my own!  I got cards from marigold, snork maiden, kaoskat, lovesbabysquirmy, babysunnybunch, & girlyponce.  Don't know if that's all I'm supposed to get.  I love all my cards!!!  And the hand-drawn ones....wow AMAZING talents here!!  I am uberly jealous!

And I also just want to say that I am so sorry I have been absent from here in a while.  My husband lost his job like a few weeks ago (right before the holidays so nice), & since he pays our rent (I work at JoAnn Fabrics, I make like $120/week if that, which doesn't pay for much), we have to move out of our nice apartment...& into my parents for who knows how long...in my old bedroom with a walk-in closet & bathroom...us & our 3 cats! (Which my parents HATE cats with a passion so my doors must be closed at all times, they can't wander anywhere but my room).  :(  I have been so depressed & crying lately. :cry:  They are also in an over 55 development with many rules, & only I can really live there, not him or his car (which he hand-built, it's his baby) so now he wants to sell it & be a 1 car family.  I have not even been in the holiday mood yet...I just can't get there no matter how many christmas songs I sing.  I even went on 3 interviews for a real job with a company & I got passed on 2 positions there for an already there employee both times, that broke my heart & my spirit too.  So, I am sorry I have been MIA......just soooo much going on.  A lot of packing & getting sad about the new job my husband is supposed to be getting after new years (going away to be a truck driver & be away for weeks at a time & I am afraid he'll be gone for our 1 year wedding anniversary in Feb).  Sorry to vent a little, but I thought I should explain my absence.  But I want everyone to have a GREAT holiday...esp. for me!!   MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!!!!!!

Glad to see the number of PMs I've received about cards arriving. :D From the messages I've received, I'd say we're around half... but there are 11 members that I had to send reminders to for PMs.

Please remember to PM me when you receive cards, and who it's from. I don't mind if you wait for a few days or a week to send a few names in one PM, but please don't wait until the end of the swap. It just causes everyone more work and hassle if you do.

Though we got walloped with a colossal snowstorm on Thursday (45cm of snow and high winds to blow it into all sorts of deep drifts), I didn't even bother to check for post yesterday (Friday).  I figured, if the sidewalks are impassable, there'd be no delivery.

Colour me really impressed, Canada Post!  I got two cards, from puuush and Sweet Scoops. ^.^  They're both lovely, and thank you so much!

Now... off to shovel.  At least I may wind up with better arm tone in the New Year if this continues! :snow: :lol:

Yeah I kept enough to send replacement cards if mine don't show up. It looks like mostly the ones I had out of the states vanished. I don't know I they are taking forever or if my post office did something stupid.

I haven't been counting, so I have no idea how many of mine have or haven't arrived.  Most of my friends and family in Australia received theirs as far as I know, so I assume that everything is ok, but I haven't been cleared from the swap yet, so I guess some are awol.

ETA, well I went through the thread, and I think I counted 8 of the 9 I sent having received.  The other was to Loa, who hasn't checked into the thread at all, so I am going to assume she got it.  :silly:

I've gotten 8 out of 9 cards so far. This weekend christmas is cleaned out tho so the last card will be looked at and put away, if it arrives that is.

Very few have written in this thread if mine actually arrived and I have PMed ArenaHunt asking if any more has gotten theirs. If not I would very much like to know about how to get on, do we send replacements?

Im not to sure im on my phone internet untill friday when i have my laptop back so its hard to check but i dont think there are many poeple still posting here:( i would really love to be cleared ir send out replacements asap as i hate having poeple wait on me for any swap x

Eep!  Did all the ponypeople I sent cards to get theirs?  I just looked at my profile and the info for the swap is gone... where does swap feedback live? :huh:  This was my first swap, so I'm confuzzled (which is normal anyway, but I digress)...

Could somepony let me know?  If there are cards awol, I can send replacements...

I got your card!  I'm sorry if I didn't post about it. It was probably on the same day as I received other cards. I did let Arenahut know that I received from you back on December 26 when I sent the list of everyone I got cards from. So I must of assumed I already posted.  So sorry to make you worry.

Yes, if the swap is not showing in the tracking on your profile, then it means all of your cards made it to their destinations. Sadly not everyone joins in the fun on the thread, but everyone is expected to PM the host account to let me know (and I've had to chase a bunch down).

Aside from Loa's cards (major PO trouble - they have twice now not sent her cards, and instead returned them to her unsent.... weeks later), looks like there are 7 cards left. I have PM'ed those involved in those exchanges. If you are one of them (listed below) - please check your PMs!

But at this point, I can pretty much say this swap is wrapped up. :) Honestly, with the number of cards (332!) being mailed, 7 potentially missing cards is one of our best years yet! 7/332 is a 2.1% lost rate - I doubt any PO's can claim that ;)

And again I say "potentially" missing - it's quite possible the cards have arrived and I don't know about them ;)

I PMed ArenaHunt telling that I swear I got Alexia's card.  Thing is, while I remember that name on a card that I did get, I cannot for the life of me find it.  I said I don't mind mine being closed.  I didn't say anything before because I am in the process of cleaning my bedroom, and I was hoping I could find it - but I can't.  So mentally, I received that card, but physically, I still only have eight cards.  Anyhow, I'm saying this out to the group, especially for Alexia, that I have been struggling with this - is my mind right, or is my physical count right?!

Either way, it was a great time, once again. :)
