What do you consider to be a fakie?

Sometimes I am confused what non-MLP horse toy.... people consider to be fakies. Can all fantasy cartoony horse toys be seen as "fakies"? Even Barbie horses or Schleich figurines?

Or how about those Disney Princess ponies? Are those considered fakies too?

I feel like it depends on the quality and the name and how it looks. I don’t think every toy similar to my little pony is a fakie. Like some things you can tell it’s a fakie but other things look like it’s too different to be a fakie.

I see.... thanks for answering!! I was just curious why some things like these are not seen as fakies despite the visual similarities to MLP's (soft rounded shape, short snout, big eyes and pastel colors)

I think the reason why is because their probably trying to be their own thing.

A toy that strongly resembles MLP but with obvious differences,  made by a small time, obscure company.

 For example Kid Connection has glass-eyed colorful ponies, that resemble the old Cabbage Patch Horses. That would be a fakie, because its a company dedicated to making very affordable knock-offs of toys. Such as log cabins, soldier sets,  tea party sets, toy horses etc.

Fantasy Fillies made by the  now defunct Marchon/Empire would not be a fakie. They were in the model horse business since the late 80s and had two fantasy horse lines,alongside their real horse lines and were a big, successful company up until the early 2000s because it got taken over by Alpha which eventually sunk them.

Fashion Star Fillies, Breyers, Sarah Bella and Schleich have always been there own thing.

I think I heard someone once say that Remco predates MLP a little, but I'm not for sure.

The quality varies among fakies.

I picked up some Zuru Sparkle Girlz Unicorns last year, which puts Hasbro's MLPs to SHAME with their thick, luscious, silky hair.

I've also passed up fakies who were complete crap. Thin plastic,  tail pulling out because there's no clamps, missing plugs.

It's cool to see the Teenie Genies MIB, I found a pair of those on eBay and figured they were no-name fakies, until someone corrected me! They're very cute, thanks for sharing that!

What was my point? Oh right! I am personally someone who plays very fast n loose with the 'fakie' title - because to me, the idea of a rooted, brushable horse toy, MLP is the original. Everything else feels like a branch-off. I've been guilty of calling Cabbage Patch Ponies fakies too - because in my herd, that's just how I classify them! Even though they're their own successful line!

I consider anything of a malleable plastic with brushable hair to be grounds to be called a fakie. If it's hard plastic with hair, I consider it more of a Barbie horse or Fashion Star Filly knockoff. If it's sculpted with no brushable hair, it's something different entirely. (Even though I just called those Teenie Genie ponies fakies! I'm a fakie flip-flopper!) For me, the fakie title has to have brushable hair! Or uh, sideburns, as some fakies have.

For me it's any horse toy that seems to be trying to ape the MLP style. So a Schleich horse I wouldn't consider a fakie, because they're nothing like MLP, it'd be difficult to mistake the two, they're clearly their own thing. And the Shopkins Happy Places ponies I think may have been a little inspired by MLP, but again, they're different enough that I wouldn't consider them a copy. (I don't think Cabbage Patch Ponies are fakies, either. Weren't they by Hasbro anyway?)

I wouldn't say any generic realistic horse toy is a fakie either. nor one with realistic proportions and fantasy colours (I.e. Fantasy Star Fillies). I mean, I guess you could call those "Dream Beauty fakies" but I wouldn't consider them such.

Now something with similar/comparable proportions to MLP, symbol, similar packaging, etc... I would consider that a fakie. I think there's definitely a distinction to made between "fakies" and "jumping on the bandwagon" too.. I can think of several toy lines that are obviously "[company]'s answer to [other company's toy]" if that makes sense. (I.e. Monster High vs Bratzillaz) But I wouldn't consider those *fakies*. They're trying to *compete* with the original brand, but they're not copying them outright, they're not trying to be an exact duplicate, or a cheaper version of them, or whatever. I guess that's a way to put it.

I agree w/ this assessment too, definitely think the company behind the toy plays a part in whether I'd consider it a "fakie" or not.

Any brushable plastic horse toy that is clearly trying to look like MLP. If it's clearly trying to be its own thing? Not a fakie!

I agree that things like breyer etc are not fakies.

Fakies are wannabe MLP type ponies, with features that MLP might have...generally cheaper.

It's not a fakie MLP if it actively belongs to another toy line that is something more than just the copy pony. So a pony from a Disney line or a Barbie line for me is not a fakie but unrelated pony.

Anything properly equine also isn't a copy MLP - just as Dream Beauties are not FSF fakies despite clearly having influence from that kind of concept.

I agree that horse toys like Disney Palace Pets,  Fashion Star Fillies etcc aren't fakies. 

To me fakies are toys that are clearly copying MLP like Kid Connection and those pony toys from places like Dollar Tree.
