I pulled the pegs off a outlet plug and cut up some soft plastic wings from a dollar tree doll

Um... those are really stinkin' cute. What a great idea!
-
This is genius! I love a fix like this. Cheap and a nice tidy job. I guess you could make them iridescent with spray paint if you liked, but they are really lovely. I like the shape of them better than the originals.
-
Brilliant! Those are just the prongs off an electrical outlet cover you used for the tabs? Who would have thought those were the perfect size? The wings themselves are really pretty too!
-
that is a fabulous idea
-
They look amazing! For how good they look I think it would be worth a trip to Dollar Tree to see if I can find them. What kind of doll did they go on?
-
Oh I love them! They're perfect and gorgeous!

Agreed

What a creative idea...I would have never thought of using the outlet covers to make tabs!
-
That's a fantastic idea! The replacement wings look really lovely.
-
Thank you guys!

They were on a fairy kelly clone doll in the toys section :)
There's also fake butterflies and birds in the craft section that could be used
-
Wonderful idea! That color is perfect for Peach Blossom, too. Theoretically, you could just find any old thing with wings you like and use the tabs to make them compatible- amazing!

They look so effective! Looks as if they were actually designed for Flutters!
Hmm, I need to scour some of the UK toy stores (after lockdown) to see if they sell similar winged dolls, some great foundations for customisation projects!!
Thanks for sharing your idea!!
-
That works :)
We might need different material for the tabs, here in the UK...but I imagine a plastic package of some kind would work. A lot of soup pots (plastic ones) have little tabs on them that might work...
-
OK, well I'm taking notes on that because I just ordered two Flutter Ponies and I didn't want to pay for custom wings... so... I think I better check my local Dollar Tree! :snicker:
-
Glad you guys liked it!
I'd love to see any flutter ponies with homemade wings, and if anyone comes up with more ways to make flutter wings, I'd love to see too.
I want to give mine a smooth uniform iridescent finish, does anyone know of a paint that would work?
They are soft plastic, and spray paint reacts badly to that.
-
Wow those are super! The outlet plug trick is very clever!
You might try a translucent acrylic paint that you apply with a brush. I think some companies have ratings for the opacity of their paints, so you could look for one with low opacity. Ah, maybe try Golden brand, I think they have those ratings AND I think they have iridescent paints!

I think it's these: "Child Safety UK Plug Socket Covers Mains Electrical Protector Inserts Guard"
The pins are are the same shape in the UK as the USA except the USA only have two pins. In Europe the pins are more cylindrical so probably wouldn't work

thats awesome and it works

Now both of my flutters have wings :)

That's gorgeous! I have never owned a flutter but looking at her makes me think again...
-
I went to my dollar tree yesterday and didn't see any dolls with wings. But they had some Cutie Mark Crews so I picked those up. I'll have to try another dollar tree this weekend.
-
What's an outlet plug?
-
Morning Glory looks great with the yellow wings!
-
What's an outlet plug?
One of those plastic things you put in electrical outlets for babyproofing purposes. I tend to call them "outlet covers."

They're like Pringles. You get one and your hooked.

So true!!
I have been scanning ebay here in the UK for inexpensive fairy dolls to harvest wings from (ooh, that sounds kinda creepy?) but cannot find the exact dolls that starrynights found; can anyone help? Do these dolls have a label saying who their manufacturers are? Their wings are so flutter-compatible!!!

Hi there, they're kelly clones made by Greenbrier International for sale at Dollar Tree.

https://www.dollartree.com/pretty-sweet-fairy-dolls/164370
They're listed as pretty sweet fairy dolls but they are commonly sold in different packaging under different names, with different clothes and eye paint, and varying wing molds.
Sadly they aren't for sale on the website right now but they may be in the future - you usually have to buy bulk if buying from the dollar tree website though,

Oh wow thank you for such great information, I am going to investigate!!! :thumb:

I'm gonna hafta go looking for some.

I just had an idea what we could maybe do with the leftover dolls. I heard somewhere that Creamsicle may have come/been seen as a prototype with a doll called Alyssa... does anyone know any more about this? I've completely forgotten! I was looking for a doll bait to make an Alyssa doll for Creamiscle anyway. If I had one of these they look like a good candidate.
-
I've checked 3 Dollar Trees in my area and none of them had the dolls. I'll have to keep my eyes open when I go to the thrift stores. If the Dollar Tree here ever had them, they'll eventually end up there.

Can you link me info/pics of her? Never heard of this.
They would definitely make good reroot candidates - soft head and not many plugs so you can define the hairline, plus the hair is falling out on its own already
Maybe I'll try making one :)

I found it! http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/File:Prototype-pony-friends.jpg (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/File:Prototype-pony-friends.jpg)
Zigzag: Zinnia
Creamsicle: Alyssa
Spunky: Cornelia
Kingsley: Kendal
If you CTRL+F 'Pony Friends' on this page: https://mylittleponyaccessories.weebly.com/page-4-paradise-baby---prom-queen-shs.html (https://mylittleponyaccessories.weebly.com/page-4-paradise-baby---prom-queen-shs.html) there is a further description saying that the dolls were in the style of Molly. The Molly dolls do look younger but maybe a new face-up would work. The proportions look OK. Just an idea.

Oh, they're pretty cute. Too bad I already gave mine to my niece.
They sell Kelly clones like these ones (without the wings) at dollar general too.
And sparkle girls at Walmart. In case any of those are around and you'd like to make one.

Yep, we had them at our dollar stores for awhile too. :) I don't remember where mine came from, I have a Green Haired girl in a yellow dress with green wings

I swear I've seen a piece of merch that featured these, too; it was either a poster, bedsheet, or something else flat with creases. I bring this up not only because they were illustrated instead of photographed, but at least one (I forget which) had a different name! I'll have to go digging for it...
If Kelly clones are what you want, I recommend the Sparkle Girls ones over the cheaper ones since they're quite a bit higher quality. The DG dolls have visible seams on their limbs and each individual piece is a slightly different color; I'm not sure about their Dollar Tree sisters, but I imagine they're similar due to being at a similar price point, if not worse due to the inclusion of wings or the little furniture sets they can come with. I have been thinking about getting one of these and giving it a plush body to be a sort of American-Girl-type doll for dolls, but I haven't actually bought one yet; I don't like the seams on the DG dolls and I don't know if the Sparkle Girls would come apart quite as easily!
-
My Dollar Tree had a bunch of these today so I bought 4 of each color wings. That way I can experiment a bit...
-
I'd love to see what you end up doing!
-
Wow! That's brilliant! And they turned out so beautiful too!
