Pony Corral / I need help...
« on: August 03, 2022, 06:35:03 PM »
Ok, long story short, I attempted to sell my entire MLP collection to a local comic shop that I have done a lot of business with and their offers have usually been more than generous but I declined because I felt like their offer of $100 was just way too low. They've given me twice that for stuff I would have personally considered to be utter crap. understand that this stuff probably is much more of niche market than what they're used to dealing with but if I'm honest, I have to admit that it stung more than a little, especially after all of the effort I put into curating it all and sorting through all of the accessories. It's mostly G4 stuff and spans a good bulk of the line but I also have some vintage and a number of con things and other exclusives. Maybe my pics werent't good enough? I dunno. I'm really just looking for a fair assesment in the general ballpark of what my stuff's worth. Am I really overshooting? I was expecting $200 at the bare minimum so when I saw $100 I was honestly a bit shocked.

I tried to take pictures of specific key pieces but I guess if you don't know anything about MLP then you'd probably have no idea what you're looking at. These people usually look this stuff up before giving me an offer but I just pulled up 5 sold listings on ebay of lots that weren't even a quarter of what I have that went for between $150-$500 just for the rarer items. I have all of the earlier wave non mane 6 G4s that may have only ever had 1 or 2 releases in the entire line, all with accessories. I have the TRU Collectors stuff, the SDCC/Pony Fair :muffin: Pony. I dunno. I'm sure MLP, especially G4, isn't as big money as something like Transformers but $100 honestly felt like a kick in the gut. It's whatever tho. I love that store and their staff have always been great with me so I don't take it personally. I wasn't even asking for cash. They usually offer more in store credit so I was just gonna have them give me credit to put towards stuff in the store since I buy from there a lot. They've generally given me around $180-$300 for assorted lots of stuff much smaller than this.

I know I come on here every other year or so reminiscing about the old times so I'm not gonna lie to myself and pretend like I'm gonna come on here and start regularly posting again, lol. I miss this. MLP was such a huge part of my life for a good chunk of a decade when G4 was at it's peak. Collecting these brought me so much joy and I have so many happy memories of interacting with other fans and community members and I met two of my best friends in the entire world through this fandom. I miss these times so much. I love and cherish every moment I've ever had as an MLP collector. The main reason I was looking at selling my collection is because so much has changed in my life since I was an active member on these boards. I've moved on to other special interests and collecting hobbies and I just don't have the space to keep everything. My living situation has changed dramatically since I was actively collecting Pony stuff. It actually took a lot for me to finally decide to let go of this stuff so I think that's really why the lowball offer bothered me so much. I'm not looking for a fortune, just an offer that is proportionate to what I have.

My pics make everything look small but it took me a LONG TIME to go through all that. Most of it has been packed away for the last 5 years between 3 different moves. To give scale as to how much all that stuff spanned my living room floor, My TV is 80".

Hello and welcome back! I didn't realise that there was never any full series release of FiM, wouldn't that be great? Actually if there was a box set of just the first two series I'd like that too because these are my favourites. I remember being so blown away by the vector and colours combined with those familiar motifs and loving it so much. I'm a G1 person mainly, and really hoping to unpack my collection when we finally move house in a month or two. I would find it really hard to part with any of my collection too! Look forward to seeing you around and sharing pony chat.

Yeah I was really bummed. They made it to Season 7 on DVD and then abruptly stopped all FiM DVD releases all at once as soon as the G4 era was losing steam. They were so close to finishing the entire show! There used to be single disc compilations that were released every few months in between the season sets. As soon as the single discs stopped, I knew it was the end. I was hoping they would at least release seasons 8 and 9 some time after the show ended just to finish out the series at least.

Steven Universe and Gravity Falls even have complete box sets now which I never thought would happen before Pony because we were getting complete season releases fairly consistently for awhile where as the former 2 shows were only getting random piecemeal compilations for the longest time.

Introductions / Hi Again!
« on: May 14, 2021, 08:18:13 PM »
Hello all. It has been quite some time since I last posted here and every time I come back for a minute I say I'm gonna stick around then I end up posting a few times and disappear for a long time so I'm not making any promises but I am truly glad to be back on here again.

It's been a long long road for me over the last 5 years or so and a lot has changed in my life between the last time I was on here and now. Most of that change has been for the better but it took a few years of bad times, family problems, deaths, and toxic living situations before I got to where I am now. I am finally in a fairly stable position and have been able to live my life in peace mostly stress free aside from some dental issues which have started to crop up in the past few months and I am currently in the middle of having them taken care of.

To be honest, I haven't bought a My Little Pony thing in almost 3 years. I've been more into collecting Sci-Fi/Horror and Jurassic Park/Dinosaur related things as of late and I was seriously contemplating parting with my Pony collection or at least seriously downsizing what I have but as I've been unpacking and going through stuff that has been boxed up for the last 3 or 4 years I've started to realize just how much My Little Pony meant to me and I'm not so sure it's going to be as easy for me to part with a lot of this stuff as I thought it might be. I'm sure this might sound silly to some but as a 33 something Man as of this year, My Little Pony brought me the most joy and happiness I had in my life for the better part of a decade.

I am on the austism spectrum and 10 years ago I was barely out of my teens. I didn't have a particularly large pool of friends and I was going through a lot of anxiety/ stress related things and identity issues. I didn't really have any serious thoughts about what I wanted to do with my life at that point and I was heavily under the influence of my mother who had a large amount of control over my finances and how they were handled even though I was working and had 3 jobs by that point. It took years and years before I was finally able to gain complete control over my finances and I had a lot of bad experiences that ultimately pushed me to my breaking point when I decided that enough was enough. I now have total control over every aspect of my financial situation and am currently living on my own through an arrangement I have with my father and a friend of his who he has a renting agreement with.

I've always had a bit of a quirky taste when it comes to things that interest me and I've always had the mindset of a collector since I was a very small child. My interest in collecting MLP was mainly focused around G4 just because I was in the right place at the right time when it was coming out but my interest initially was sparked by G3 and MLP was exactly the sort of thing I would have eventually gotten into and liked regardless of whether the Brony thing ever happened or not. I love toys in general and all of the history behind them. It never mattered to me whether it was a line aimed at boys or girls. toys are toys to me. I also love bright, colorful things so Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, all that kind of stuff appeals to me but I also have always liked shoot 'em up, smash and bash toys like G.I Joe, Ninja Turtles and Batman just as well.

I never really identified as a "Brony" during the height of the G4 era but I didn't mind being called one, I just didn't necessarily relate to a lot of what the community represented as far as being exclusively based around G4. I liked all gens, but since G4 was current at the time that is mostly what I collected. I also was very big into the show for at least the first few seasons because of it's unusually high quality for a show of it's target demographic, so much so that I bought every single DVD release that ever came out just so I could support the show and see it through to a complete series release which unfortunately didn't happen. I also didn't really participate in many Brony centric gatherings or attend any cons but I loved the atmosphere at the time and the whole idea that some random thing I liked had blown up into this huge phenomenon. I didn't really experience or hear about any of the negative stuff from the community like you sometimes hear about now, I just loved the fact that Pony was everywhere at the time. I love the show's messages, the animation style, the voice cast, the music, It was just an all around exceptional cartoon in my eyes and it helped me through a lot that was going on at the time. The only con I ever attended was MLP Fair 2012 which was right when the Brony thing was first blowing up so even though it was a general Pony con, there were a lot of Bronies there. One of my best friends was a vendor there and I bought a lot of really great stuff at that con.

Going through all of my Pony stuff recently has reminded me just how big of a part of my life this all was for a very long time. For like a 5 or 6 year span, the biggest joys in my life were going to Disney with my best friend who I used to work with and collecting My Little Pony. In the beginning when G4 had just started I got really deep into it really fast and started buying basically anything I could get a hold of. Eventually, I started to be more selective of what I really wanted but for the most part I got a lot of the new stuff that was coming out at the time until I ended up with a pretty sizeable collection that took up a good deal of my apartment. I lived in an efficiency type apartment building that was part of my parents property at the time. After my parents divorced I moved like 3 different times and most of my stuff has been packed away for the last 5 years. Going through it has been like a massive blast from the past for me just because I guess it's been long enough now for me to be nostalgic for the early days of G4 but also because I haven't actually looked at most of these toys since 2016. At one point the majority of my "fun money" would go to Ponies. Even though I was a 20 something year old guy at the time that was what made me the most happy, going to stores and looking for the latest Ponies. There was just something really euphoric to me about collecting colorful toy horses and I really miss that feeling a lot. I have a lot of really happy memories attached to these toys.

Anyway, sorry for my overlong reintroduction. I just really miss coming on this board and talking about Ponies. I do think I want to downsize a little but I don't think I could ever get rid of my collection entirely. Ideally if I ever have kids I would like to one day hand my stuff down to them.

In all reality I'll probably just stick with some of the more manageable pieces space wise, such as the in store banners and such you can find on ebay. Still, I just can't stop entertaining the thought of how awesome it would be to own a giant illuminated Я.

Toys Я Us held a special meaning for me. It was more than just a store. I know they had a reputation for high prices, and they never stocked what I was looking for half the time, but when I was a kid it was like the retail equivalent of Disneyland to me. It wasn't just a place, it was an experience. Even in my adulthood, It was like one of my favorite places to go to just chill out and relax, and since the place was dead most of the time it was like I had the whole store to myself to just browse at my own leisure.

I will truly miss Toys Я Us, probably more than I have ever missed any defunct retail establishment. I just want to find some kind of really cool piece of memorabilia to remember it by. I guess it's just another extinct relic of my childhood that I'll never be able to experience again, like dedicated video game arcades.

Pony Corral / I think Pirate Applejack is missing part of her Hat!
« on: August 06, 2018, 08:11:57 PM »
I just picked up Boyle and Pirate Applejack on clearance at Walmart, and upon opening them I noticed a notch in Applejack's Hat like something was supposed to go there. I noticed a red feather pictured all over the box, and then I looked up pics on ebay that show a feather is supposed to go there, but it's kinda hidden behind the MLP logo on the box window.

Overall I'm not too bothered by it as it doesn't really detract from the overall look. If it's anything like the feather on Twilight's Hat, it seems like they just forgot to glue it in at the factory.

This may be an odd question, but as I'm still trying to get past the fact that my favorite childhood store has gone out of business (Toys R Us), I have been noticing a number of eBay auctions for some really interesting things such as in store signage, shopping baskets, price scanning guns branded with the TRU logo, and other various TRU branded paraphernalia, but the thing that really is really getting me excited are the listings for the actual storefront signage from the outside of the building.

I'm sure the odds of any joe schmoe getting a hold of something like this are slim, but if one were interested in purchasing/acquiring somethibg like this, how does one get in contact with the owner of the building? There is only 1 TRU anywhere in my vicinity, but they still have all of their exterior signage.

I consider Toys R Us to be an iconic part of my childhood and to own something like this to me would be like the ultimate memento. I don't really expect anything to happen, but I feel it's at least worth a shot to get in contact with the property owner. Realistically I don't even have room to store something like the whole sign, but there have been eBay listings for individual letters and even just the backwards R would be awesome.

Also, most of the signage on my local TRU is pretty new, most of it was replaced a year or so ago after one of the Hurricanes.

I literally didn't even know what the packaging looked like for the new EQG dolls until just having seen one on ebay. I hope they start to appear more. The pony sections in general have been pretty sparse at most places around here.

I wonder how well the EG reboot dolls are doing.

I don't know about other areas, but I literally have never seen a single one of these in a store. I only know they exist from reading about them online. I haven't seen much of anything EQG related in a long time. About 2 years ago there was a huge glut of Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games dolls appearing in discount stores, and that's about the last I've seen besides those little Mini figures that were around for a little bit.

9
I've seen some of the new Jurassic World stuff at Walmart, and honestly until I read this just now I had no clue Mattel had the JP license now, but I did notice the quality of the new toys was significantly better than the uninteresting, poor quality crap that came out for the last movie.

I just looked up the new JP stuff on ebay and apparently they are even doing legacy figures from previous movies. That's really awesome! I've wanted to get into collecting JP for years but some of the original Vintage stuff can be a bit pricey and in my opinion most of the stuff Hasbro released from JP III onward sucked. Jurassic World was where it got really bad tho, most of the toys I saw for that looked like complete garbage.

Also, I agree that the quality of most toys in general have really gone down. Toys from when I was a kid were made with quality, which is why I still have many of them. A lot of modern toys now feel like they are going to break right out of the package. This is partly why (aside from nostalgia) I have been looking to start collecting some of the original toy lines I had as a kid. I am heavily interested in the Star Wars Power of the Force line from the 90's right now. They may not be the most realistic looking toy iterations of these characters, but they still bring me the same joy they brought to me as a kid and I don't feel like they are going to crumble into dust just by me looking at them.

To me the Power of the Force 2 line is what the Vintage line is to a lot of people who grew up with it. That was my Star Wars, and I like the newer stuff but it just doesn't seem as cool to me, lol. This line was very significant in that it helped bring back Star Wars to the public as a viable and profitable franchise again after a long period of stagnation from the mid 80s to the early 90s.

POTF2 seems to often get lumped in as being the red haired step child of Star Wars toylines tho because the sculpting and articulation aren't as advanced as newer lines, but it also isn't the original, so for some reason it seems to have completely lost any appeal to collectors, which is fine with me because it means I can get the pieces I want without breaking the bank.

Off Topic / Does anyone here collect Star Wars?
« on: March 31, 2018, 08:19:45 AM »
I've been wanting to get back into collecting Star Wars for quite some time. I sold most of my childhood collection years ago and later regretted it, but I have hesitated to get back into it because now there are so many different lines, 100 different versions of the same character, and even more movies with new characters and such, ect I didn't even know where to start.

I think I have finally narrowed it down to what I actually want to collect tho. I just want to collect most of the core characters and ships from the Power of the Force 2 line [1995-2000] which is the line I grew up with and love the most. I have noticed on ebay that this line doesn't seem to be as popular as the vintage line or some of the newer modern lines, so you can get most items from this line for relatively cheap. I plan on sticking mostly to POTF2 but if I see an odd figure here and there from another Star Wars line that I like I wouldn't be opposed to picking it up. I don't really care about having the best available sculpt of a figure ever produced, I just want to collect the figures I remember playing with.

Yeah those figures came out a few years ago. It's only been in the last couple of years that more Home Alone merch has started to come out. Back when the first 2 films originally came out they also had talking Kevin dolls, and of course the Talkboy from Home Alone 2.

This is my latest CD haul! I got these at a few different places within the past week. Most of them are Justin Timberlake. I also figured if I'm getting NSYNC I may as well get the Backstreet Boys too, lol.
