Title: Getting cigarette smell out of Rainbow Brite dolls?
Post by: mylittELLEpony on August 11, 2017, 10:35:26 AM
My husband bought me a lot of Rainbow Brite dolls on ebay as a gift. They came today, and I'm really upset. The listing said "currently from a smoke free home" which was clearly worded that way to hide the fact that they PREVIOUSLY came from a home with a smoker. They smell horrific. How do I fix this?

La La Orange's hat also has 0 elastic and I don't know how to sew, so if anyone could help guide me towards a tutorial or something for learning how to replace that, I'd appreciate it as well.

I just want to fix these dolls. My husband was so proud of himself for buying me something I actually wanted (he's not great with gifts lol) and now I have to pretend not to be disappointed. Help me save them!

Well I'd start with a good wash and airing out. You can try odoban or other sprays that have those enzyme thingies in them and once she's smoke free try, spritzing her with some citrus scent, I swear citrus outlasts everything, even cigarettes.

I fixed them!

I soaked their clothes in Dawn and oxyclean for an hour and hand washed them. The dolls and sprites I put in a pillow case and soaked in oxyclean and detergent for about four hours before washing them on delicate. They smell fine now and look new (besides some lip paint issues that they had when they came to me, which I will fix soon.) No idea if it's a "no no" to wash the dolls this way, but it worked and there is 0 issue so...win/win.

I wash everything that comes into my house.  So yay for you.  I tend to wash dolls in pillow cases.  I use Imgur.

Glad you saved them!

I usually will try a wash in a pillow case- and oxyclean soak for hard cases- you just have to be a little careful with oxy as it is great with stains and odors but can dissolve and discolor some fabrics (I learned this the hard way unfortunately)
