Vintage MLPs - actually, no lead or arsenic
« on: January 30, 2022, 01:48:45 PM »
Hey all, around 2015 there was a study on vintage toys that showed that some contain traces of lead and arsenic.  (Not enough to make a kid drop dead obviously but, y'know, any level of lead is bad.)

MLPs were mentioned in the abstract of the study, because they were tested, alongside 70s/80s Barbies, Little People and other toys. BUT it didn't specify what level of lead etc was found in each toy.  So I emailed the researcher and asked.  And she kindly and very quickly replied back!

"The one MLP tested for this study (I don't remember why just one, as I have several from the 80s) didn't show lead, arsenic or cadmium. But I know from later testing with a different technique that old MLPs and Barbies typically contain high levels of phthalates, chemicals used to make vinyl plastic flexible that are now banned in children's products as they migrate easily onto skin and act as hormone disruptors. I didn't give my kids my old Barbies and MLPs, sadly."

So, although the phthalates are something to consider if you want to pass on your ponies to your kids, at least vintage ponies DO NOT contain lead, arsenic, or cadium.  :)

(Sidenote, I think it's the phthalates that cause that G1 pony smell, which explains why G3s don't smell like that, and also why they and Basic Fun ponies are less squishy than G1s.)

She also sent me a chart of the results of the toys tested . . . Will post that here after I get the image hosted.  For MLP, they tested one pony, a pink saddle, and a pink shoe.

I'm not surprised, having read the abstract from the report...it never said anything about those things being found in old MLP, so I assumed that meant they weren't. But it's good to have it confirmed. It's not that I think 80s plastic is as friendly as it could be, but I feel like if lead and such were in MLP, the article would have said so clearly.

Just because something is a lurid shade of pink, does not mean you guys should lick it to find out if it's full of lead or not.

"Hormone disruptors"
I'm definitely going to move on with my life pretending to know what this means!
Does this have anything to do with the people who insist that kids are starting puberty at younger ages than normal?

Just because something is a lurid shade of pink, does not mean you guys should lick it to find out if it's full of lead or not?

You might joke, but I have a friend who actually did this once. Or at least claimed to. I wasn't there or anything but...

Here lies Karen, who died because of her love of plastic toy ponies.

I mean, ya know, if you gotta go, they always say die doing what you love. Soo, I guess this means buy more ponies, right?
Probably doesn't own a stolen piece of the Taj Mahal.

Reminds me when I was searching for info about plasticizing and found a comment from someone whose brother cut up and ate a pony! They didn't die, I don't know about their hormones though. :silly: :silly:
