It's the only photo I have from the seller, and we have some uh, translation issues, so do you think that forelock's the normal pink or is it bright red? Looks way red to me, but it could be just the camera...

What do you think, should I flip out and drop big bucks on her, or is this just the normal rainbow hair scheme with pink? If it's actually red in the rainbow, it's soooo pretty, I'd really love her but I don't want to overpay on a misunderstanding...

What would you price her as if she has normal rainbow hair? PC if that's actually red in the rainbow?

Augh, foreign purchasing dilemmas. :drunk:

Customs / 100% waterproof paint?
« on: July 16, 2013, 02:48:05 PM »
Hi guys! I've recently been musing about custom-sculpting a g1-to-g4 Sea Pony, and experimenting with resin-casting them to be 100% waterproof and floatable... An ambitious (and probably long-term) project for me, but I can't stop thinking about it.

My question is, what paints out there can be used on resin (or vinyl, or a similar synthetic), that is 100% waterproof? In my experience, even craft acrylic that's been sealed with "waterproof" sealant will get mushy and peel off if it's been exposed to moisture for too long... Or maybe I should use a different sealant? I want to make something you could feasibly display floating in water (for a not-too-long period of time, like for photo shoots or an art show)!

[7/31]:
Just finished a reroot commission for mermaid_splash, a microfiber perfume puff style for one of her Fizzys! (Fizzies? lol)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Aside from that I've got a boatload of WIPs going... Until I have more stuff worth posting, I've started a Flickr for my craft and custom stuff, which you can view here! I'm also open for reroot commissions now, yay! My pricing and info is here. Thanks, all!

[7/16]:
I've decided to keep all my custom stuff to one thread since I've felt like I've been spamming too much content lately. XD I'm just making TOO MANY THINGS!

Last night I decided to try some HAIR EXPERIMENTS, and the subject of the evening was Pinkie! I can gladly say... it was a success!

She was rehaired in brushed microfiber yarn quite a while ago, but it still wasn't as totally on-model as I would have liked... and straw curls usually aren't super-tight enough for me to want to use on pinkie. That's why I tried this: mini safety pin curlers!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I used the super-mini gold safety pins, and used them much like those clip-on foam hair curlers, by first rolling a strip of moistened paper towel onto the safety pin for cushioning, like so:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Then I just rolled small sections of hair onto the safety pins, tightly from tip to root. After that, they got set with boiling water, and she sat in front of a fan to dry for a few hours:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The safety pins and paper towel bits were then removed caaarefully so as to not un-curl the curls, which left her with AMAZINGLY tiny poofy tight curls. <3 A really fun method that I haven't seen anyone do before!

Anyway, hope you like her. :D I should really re-do her cutie mark to be on both sides now, too... (dang it, hasbro.)

[7/15]:
Hooray, my first fully-repainted G4 custom (and second full custom ever)! I've been wanting to do this girl for a while, Ringlet being one of my faaavorite G1s. <3

She's repainted in craft acrylic, rehaired with microfiber, and boil-permed - no product in those lovely curls! They're so light and bouncy... you wouldn't believe it used to be yarn!

I was originally making her to sell, but I think I love her too much... Maaaybe I'll just let her share some space on my desk for a while, haha. :drunk:

Hi again! :whoa: It's been a while since I posted anything here... Anyway, just wanted to share a handful of brushed yarn rehairs that I'd done in recent months. Enjoy!

First is on-model Rainbow Dash! I'm SUPER proud of her, and wish I had gotten more pics, but I was in a rush to bring her to EFNW, where she sold to go live in Australia!

Another Rainbow Dash, this one in Perfume Puff style!

Here's one I'm still working on... Dewdrop Dazzle, to be done to better match her blind bag counterpart, with rarity-styled curls! Just have to curl it now...

Here's a winter-y (or maybe ocean-y) gradient attempt, done on a de-eyed beddy-bye eye (you don't want to see the front view... creepy eyeless pony! xD )

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Next is a blend, done with white, ice blue, lavender, and pink. The lighting kind of killed the ice blue, it's VERY light... but it's there. :'D

Last is Moonstone, re-done in microfiber with her original colors!

Hope you like 'em all! Right now I have a handful of rehairs & a custom I've done in the past for sale HERE, which includes that Moonstone!

Thanks for lookin'! <3

Extra root holes were added to achieve the shape of the bangs. To get her short hairstyle to hold I used just a couple drops of diluted styling glue. Her tail is left silky and natural with no product added.

Hope you guys like her! <3

Customs / Custom sales - How do you price yourself?
« on: April 03, 2013, 04:41:37 AM »
I'm pretty new to the world of customs, and I've found myself completely baffled as to what the standard method of pricing customs is. For example, how long do you spend on a custom vs. your final price?

I'm asking because customs seem to take a LOT of time, and I see most basic paint + rehair customs going for $20-$30?... So far FBRs take me HOURS to get them as smooth as I'd like, with 6-8 layers of thinned paint and having to wait until each layer is perfectly dry before the next one. Then a rehair will be ~2 hours, and eyes and symbols will be another 2-4... Am I just slow, or is everyone out there massively undercharging for their work? I guess there's the whole "it's just a pony toy" factor when determining what people will pay for, but now I really gawk at the comparatively low prices out there vs. the hours and hours of work that has to go into that sculpting and those perfectly-smooth paint jobs...

Anyway, please tell me how you break down your prices, ponies!

She's my first painted custom, fully re-painted in acrylic and sealed with Dullcote. Her hair is brushed and straightened acrylic yarn, and it is SOFT. I'm really proud of her, it was a lot of work to make sure I didn't leave any brush strokes behind! :P

She's currently for sale, asking $40 + shipping.

Pony Corral / G1 symbol misprint?
« on: March 29, 2013, 09:34:49 PM »
I got a Moondancer on Ebay lately because her symbols seemed like they were in really good condition (and they are! kinda rare for symbol-rubby moondancers!), but when she arrived I noticed her symbols also seemed oddly misprinted!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The symbols on her other side are better aligned, but on that side the moon is just kind of floating away like that, haha. How common is this? Do you think it'd devalue her, or add value because of the rarity of it? I haven't seen symbols be so off before...

I guess if anyone else wants to share their really misprinted symbols for curiosity's sake, go right ahead.

Customs / Gauging interest - Custom Playset Swap?
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:37:33 PM »
Hey everybody! I'm still a super newbie on the Arena, but I got this idea for a swap and it just seemed like so much fun I couldn't resist throwing the idea out there! If enough people get behind it, maybe we could find an older member willing to host it? Anyway, onto the idea, and it's a big one!

Custom playsets!

The idea is to make a basic custom themed pony with matching playset, much like Hasbro has made in the past! I'm talking something like the G4 accessory sets and other playsets.

Now, before you get scared, this swap wouldn't necessarily require intense prop sculpting! For those that prefer not sculpting, assembling a collection of to-scale dollhouse miniatures would be an option - common 1:12 dollhouse scale seems to work well for G4 ponies, maybe slightly bigger for G1s/bigger ponies, and these are easily hunted down on ebay, dollhouse sites & craft stores, etc. Of course, accessories would have to be pony-fied in appropriate colors and patterns, and all match a similar aesthetic - IE, no unpainted antique-styled wooden dinner tables with pink plastic barbie plates. The point is customizing, not assembling a collection of purchases!

Playsets would include 5-10 small accessories, one "furniture" or feature piece, one basic, matching, un-sculpted pony, and one tri-fold cardboard backdrop - which could be printed, collaged, hand-drawn, scrapbooked... whatever you prefer, as long as it pulls the set together!

Partners would be grouped by skill level and crafting preference: those willing to sculpt and those that aren't (although sculptors aren't required to sculpt EVERYTHING - like if you wanted to include something like a brush - it would just be the most raw-creation-heavy). A participant's "wishlist" would be their top three desired playset prompts with up to three possible matching ponies per playset (if specifics are desired), that way the partner could choose whichever scene and pony would best suit their abilities.

Here are some silly ideas off the top of my head of possible playsets!

Outdoor picnic
Vegetable and flower garden
Roller derby
Day at the beach
Mr. Breezy's fan shop!
other FiM scenery recreations (with matching background pony?)

This is still all very brainstormy, so please give me your feedback and ideas! Let me know if you think anything flat-out wouldn't work, and ideas of what might make it better. :'D Likewise, if you're really set on participating and want to do accessory sculpting, make sure you have some examples done before sign-ups might happen!

[NOTE] >> If you're an old enough arena member and you'd be interested in hosting this swap, please say so!

Customs / Soft rehairs - Ringlet and on-model Fluttershy!
« on: March 28, 2013, 02:38:16 PM »
Hey again! I've got a couple more yarn fiber rehairs I finished recently that I wanted to share, so here they are!

First is Ringlet, with alternate colors to match her rainbow symbols... This girl as-is is one of my FAVORITES, but this one had hair that was simply un-saveable, poor thing. Now she looks much better!

Next is Fluttershy!

She's SO soft and petable, I can't get over it. No product in her hair as well, just styled with hot water then dried. She's my favorite FiM pony so I'm glad she came out so well. <3

So far next on my definite list is Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Applejack (with a sewn hat!), so I can have the whole mane 6 all with on-model hair. I'm also working on my first fully-painted custom that has soft yarn hair as well (lol, maybe I should finally give in and order some dollyhair...), so I'll be posting that soon, too. <3

Customs / On-model rehaired Lyra!

There's no product in her hair, it was just styled with hot water then dried!

She's not for sale unfortunately, as she was my prototype to try and figure out rehairing in the first place, so she has some flaws... For one, her neck plug snapped while I was trying to re-attach her head (before I learned about boiling to make it easier to pop the head on/off, whoops), so her head's glued in place... I might be selling similar ones later, though, or if you're really interested, just PM me!

Customs / PHOTO TUTORIAL -- Yarn fiber rehairing! [VERY pic heavy!!]
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:57:41 PM »
Hey everybody! I got a lot of interest in my soft fluffy yarn rehairs I did....

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

...so here's a tutorial on how you can do it yourself! I didn't invent this method all by myself or anything - I had been using it for years, but for making faux fur accents on costumes instead, and it's fairly well-known among other creative communities like that. In any case, I thought it would work great for rehairing ponies, and it does! Without any further ado, here's how you do it:

Materials:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

100% acrylic WORSTED WEIGHT yarn (AKA standard or medium weight - ask the yarn store person for help if you don't know what to look for!)- do NOT use cotton, wool, alpaca, or any other natural blend. The softer the better, so avoid cheap scratchy bulk yarns like Red Heart or I Love This Yarn.
Hair straightener with adjustable heat setting on LOW
Metal-bristled pet slicker brush
A smooth, disposable surface to brush on top of - this is because the pet bristles are pretty scratchy, you will totally ruin the finish on your tabletop if you're not using something like smooth cardboard or cardstock!
Rehair tool - IF you're using the needle-and-thread method instead, follow all the following steps but DO NOT separate your yarn in half! Simply tie a knot in the middle, thread one half of the yarn strand through a hole in one row, and the other half through the neighbor hole in the other row.
Not pictured: GLUE! whatever brand you prefer for sealing roots after using the rehair tool (I prefer Aleene's Tacky Glue)

GETTING STARTED:
Cut your lengths of yarn - the longest you can usually get your fiber is about 6" (12" total, since you fold it in half). So, cut a BUNCH of 12" segments (or however shorter).

>>NOTE!<< The following steps for splitting a piece of yarn in half is only necessary for G4 PONIES! Their plug holes are much smaller, and it's hard to fit a whole piece of yarn folded in half otherwise. With G1s (and possibly others), you can skip right to the folding-in-half-for-brushing stage...

Take one piece of yarn and twist it slightly in the middle to expose the segments, like so:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Gently separate the segments into two halves, with two segments per half:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now you take your length of yarn, and fold it exactly in half, holding it firmly in the middle:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Take your bristle brush, and GENTLY and SLOWLY start to brush the yarn from tip to root. Only work your way up a couple millimeters at a time with each brush. You're only trying to untwist the fibers, so be gentle! If you pull too hard, the thin fibers will break, and you'll get a very short plug and unnecessary fiber loss.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

This does produce a LOT of waste fluff, though! This is all the fluff from just ONE plug:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

By the time you're done, you'll have a huge pile of fluff bigger than your pony, haha! Don't let it freak you out, though - this happens because when yarn is woven, it's comprised of loads of single-size fiber segments all twisted together at intervals. When you cut off a segment of yarn and brush it out from the middle, any fiber segments that aren't anchored right in the middle will be sloughed off - so it's just the ends of other fibers that you've cut.

Anyway, you now have one fluffy little fiber plug! Hooray! If you want floofy wavy mohair-like hair like Pinkie or Sundance up there, you can go ahead and root it!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

If you want silky-smooth hair like Lyra up there, though, go ahead and run your hair straightener set on LOW over it once, give it a brush, then maybe straighten over it once again- It's like TOTAL MAGIC, now it's super soft and silky, like this:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now just pick it up in the middle with your rehair tool...
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

...and pop it in!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now look at that long silky hair plug!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

fluttershy: "yay."

After you've filled in all the plug holes, coat the roots inside the head in a generous helping of glue, then let it dry for 24 hours. Once it's dry, you can brush and style as you like! I should note, though, the un-straightened wavy yarn hair isn't very brushable - it's just too thick! It can, however, be teased, styled, separated, and combed through with your fingers...

Making the tail uses pretty much the same method: Tie a bunch of strands together as if you were making a normal nylon tail, then just brush 'em out! (Note, you don't have to split the yarn strands in half before tying them together, though.) Easy peasy~

I hope you all enjoyed the tutorial! If you wind up using this method to rehair any ponies, please show me, I'd love to see what you make!!
 :frolic:

<3 Anyway, have a good one!

Customs / Super FLUFF! Rehaired Pinkie Pie and Sundance [pic heavy!]
« on: March 19, 2013, 05:02:29 PM »
Hey everyone! I finally dove into the world of customs, so these are my first few rehairs! Of course I just couldn't do things conventionally, so these rehairs are done with brushed-out yarn. The finished product is incredibly thick, fluffy, and soft, and feels pretty much just like mohair!

First up is Pinkie Pie, rehaired and styled to look much more like in-show Pinkie!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Here's her before cutting and styling - holy 80s batman!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Next is Sundance rehaired, with some nice soft pink yarn fiber.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And as a bonus, here's a WIP! I'm rehairing Lyra with the same method, only the brushed-out yarn is also straightened... this makes it VERY much like super-high-quality faux fur, so after it's cut it will be very easy to style into Lyra's in-show hairstyle!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

It's SUPER shiny and lush. So thick you can barely see the roots!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Hope you all enjoy, thanks for looking! :D
