Airbrush paints
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:11:03 AM »
Just bought my first airbrush an Iwata Eclipse Series HP-CS Gravity feed and a Iwata Silver Jet Airbrush Compressor.
So now I would like to know what paints to get for it.
Does anyone have some good recommendations? I don't want to buy some and find they are rubbish on pony plastic!
Thanks
Laura

I adore Createx airbrush paints!  They have very smooth coverage, typically do not dry tacky, and flow well in the brush.  I get mine from Hobby Lobby, they are by model car paints.

I have heard that the Testors Acryl paints can be used for airbrushing. I just paint with them straight from the jar and they are perfect and flawless. When I have some time to test my airbrush, im going to give them a try.

I use Model Colour by Vallejo. The thing that I like best is they do a colour chart booklet that I have brought home and always measure up against a pony to get an approximate paint match before I've started mixing.

They do Airbrush paints as well but I just use the normal ones with some thinner/water and a retarder medium; because they're acrylic they dry fast on the tip of the airbrush and can clog it, so using this medium and giving it a quick swipe with a wet brush now and again does the trick.

Woot yay Laura! I tend to use Americana paints/ Decoart paints for my airbrush tried using the Citadel ones before too but i found that occasionally they dried tacky so I just use them for symbols now!
Have fun with you're new airbrush!

When I cant afford the fansy $$ expensive paints. I will water-down acrylic paints where its a thin paint
This helps if you wish to save money! and it stays on your pony without no plastic problems however ... use thin coats and build up the ponies colors layer by layer. Looks better this way and no spots or water lines ~ Have fun with your new airbrush

The airbrush I bought and haven't been able to try yet said to use paint thinner with whatever I spray and mix it 50/50

Does this not work with acrylic? I ask since I hear so many people saying they use water.

I'm sure there was a topic about this sometime ago, can't seem to find it now though! i have a;ways used water to thin my paints down and have never had any problems with painting with it or using it in my airbrush!

My paints actually say on them that they can be thinned with water, but they also make a proper thinner so I use a mixture of both.

I just don't want to add paint thinner to mine and ruin them. I guess I'll just have to try it and pray :(

I don't think you'll have any problems as long as the thinner is meant for acrylics.

I wasn't aware there were different types. I'll be sure to check before I open it. I just grabbed the cheapest bottle I could find at wal mart.

I use Createx, but I do tend to mix it with normal artist acrylics and water it down :)
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!
