Title: Craziest Cover Letter I have EVER received at my job.
Post by: Tilas on January 26, 2012, 03:35:14 PM
So as some of you may or may not know, I work in an employment office. We get resumes & cover letter’s constantly to forward off to companies for people. Well, today I was checking my email and printing off resumes, when I came across this one, and I HAD to share. I’ve deleted anything “identifiable”, so I hope this makes you laugh as much as it made us. And yes, this person was completely serious in their application, and had an actually quite well done resume! Good luck to you applicant!

Cover Letter

Top of the morning to you:

I guess you would like to know a bit about me. Are you sure? OK. I just want a steady job where I’m not running all over the country, job to job. That doesn’t look good on a resume now does it? It’s been said that I work and play well with others. Well that’s what my kindergarten teacher put on my Report card this year anyway. I like to work hard. I don’t see a point in sitting around doing nothing when there is work to be done. I’ve been told that I work too hard. BLA! I’ve also been told that I have a good sense of humor… But what do they know? Maybe you would like to find out??? I’m good looking. SSSH! Don’t tell the secretary that. Just keep reading, I’m almost done. I am always early. Never late. If I happen to call in sick, then I am most definitely much too sick. Not hungover or any other type of self inflicted “illness”. If I am not too sick why stay home and not make money when I can be sick and make money. I would be sick regardless. My typing skills are horrible. So it took me some time to get this done for you. I just hope you take some time to read it. I did. 10 times. Just to make sure I didn’t mess up too bad.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and look at my resume. If you need a  worker, I’m here any time. If you have already got all your staff… Oh well at least you have just read the weirdest cover letter ever.

Have a great day. Regretfully not yours yet:  *******************

Hey! I'd hire him! Too bad I don't have anything to hire him for. Everyone is desperate right now and I'm sure this one will stand out. Right now "standing out" among the masses isn't easy. Seems worth a shot to try by being entertaining!

I like it. My resume is something like it. Anything to stand out and make you memorable you know.

With a cover letter like that, they deserve at least an interview! :lmao:

I'd give that them an interview. It's clever, and still written well enough to prove the person isn't just an idiot.

I agree!!!  Good on them for taking a risk too rather then being prim and proper :)

Actually, as an employer myself I find that letter quite engaging.  I can't believe I am going to say this but I would probably interview that person (so long as their resume was good, as you stated, Talis).  Hehe, best of luck to them!

Can you tell us which kind of job that person was looking for? If it's something creative, like journalism, I'd say well done! The person proves that they know how to write engaging pieces. I've read a few cover letters lately because we were looking for a new part-timer, and none was as interesting as that one.

That is an AWESOME letter. I actually have done similar when desperately needing to stand out. Not quite THAT random, but I tuck my tongue firmly into my cheek and write a cover letter version of a stand-up comedy routine.

Also, when I quit a REALLY bad job in my postal worker days, I maaaaaay have submitted my two weeks' notice in the form of a snarky parody of the song "Still Alive" from Portal (my version was "Still Employed" since I had another job lined up). Too bad all my co-workers thought "video games" were those gambling things you play at the bar. No one got the joke, but I'm sure they thought I was off my rocker!

Surprisingly, the person is a Heavy Equipment Operator and contractor looking for work in the local mines.

Well then, his/er "horrible" typing skills shouldn't be a problem.  I'd interview him/her!  :)

I would have never guessed that...I would have thought maybe they were going for a field job because of the typing, but not in the mining industry. Goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover :)

Wow...  it's not surprising that employers are having trouble finding employees who can properly communicate in written fashion!  :(  Those kinds of cover letters and resumes don't even get looked at in my office - we dump them all into a folder called "NO".  Regardless of whether the employee is expected to write techical manuals or operate mining equipment, there NEEDS to be the ability to write a professional cover letter!

It is a shame that most places would not give this person a second look. They may not know or care what a professional cover letter should look or sound like. At least you can be sure he wrote it himself, he didn't pay a service to write it for him. What I like best it that there's absolutely no fake "BS" in there, like alot of cover letters sound.

I hope for that guy, employers in his industry can overlook the lack of professional writing skills and him a chance to show what he can really do!

Thumbs Up from me!

He would definitely get an interview if it was me!

As a composition teacher, I'm terrified.

Please, folks: INVEST in writing skills!

While this seems cute on some levels, it does suggest someone with limited communication skills or someone who has been "out of the loop" for a while.

I would contact her/him and suggest some application material help sites or books to help them better their chances.

They appear to have a good heart; their approach just needs some tiding-up.

Although, they do have a better grasp of content than some other folks!

I'd say it's probably meant as a tongue-in-cheek piece. With that in mind, I like it!

As an employer I'd be bored to tears reading dozens of stuffy cover letters that are probably half fabrication and half exaggeration. If it gets him an interview that's all that really matters.

See, thing is, I've written dozens upon dozens of cover letters over the years at my job for people, and employers *know* when I've written it for a client. I warn the clients employers know and it can look bad, but sadly, so many are just SO BLOODY LAZY they expect me to do all their damn work. Which is why I love stuff like this, and I don't even mind "professional" style ones with errors, cause at least I know the person wrote it themselves! Employers notice it too, and I've seen a lot of cover letters "I've" done get passed over. Not cause I didn't do my best FOR the client, but because the employer knows it was form me, NOT them.

I am currently looking for employment and recently saw the perfect job! In the ad they said you must have a fantastic sense of humour. I literally redid my CV so that the first page had silly little anecdotes and info about me plastered all over. I got the interview based purely on that! I was so happy! :)

So yes, even though his writing skills are not top notch, I'd still interview him for his creativity!

I think that the letter is awesome. I also think that what type of cover letter a person writes probably depends on the job they are seeking. I know in my field that, even though most psychologists have a good sense of humor, if I submitted that I would never get a second look.

Hopefully though, the guy does well because that will most certainly get him a second look!
