I just finished reading 'Sins of the Father' - the untold story behind Schapelle Corby's ill-fated drug run. It was very thought provoking.
What is everyone else reading at the moment?

New Arena posts. :silly:

I'm reading "The Spark" by Chris Downie for the second time. Since I've been absorbed in new Arena doings, I haven't read very far into it yet.

Me too!
I'm also about halfway done with The Two Towers. I got a Kindle for Christmas (OMG I love it!) and read the Hobbit first. Then I bought a digital copy of the 50th anniversary edition of LOTR (I own the hardcopy of that edition, it's big and bound in red leather), which is the most accurate version published and has all 3 books in one, as originally intended. I should have all of them finished by the end of the month :)
-
I'm reading Survival of the Sickest by Dr. Sharon Maolem. It's really interesting; I suggest you all check it out. :)
-
I'm just about to start on Neal Stephenson's REAMDE. I'm excited!
-
Hooked on Murder: A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hechtman
It is as bad as it sounds.

Awesome reading, Zenna! I love LOTR :frolic:
I like the sound of some of the other books listed in this thread too. *runs off to google*

Hooray, you have wonderful taste! I am about as big a Tolkien nut as you will ever find. I've read every single Middle Earth-related book published (including the Silmarillion, which was a toughie) and in high school I studied Quenya and the Tengwar in my free time. *is a nerd*
-
I am not reading anything at The Moment
LM
-
Awesome reading!! I love the LOTR languages too!

I'm re-reading Animorphs. When I'm stupid stressed I always pick easy children's literature to read so I can totally relax :))

Oh I used to adore those books! Can't remember for the life of me what they were about, but I remember the flip pages at the bottom :P

Every December, since I was 12, I've re-read the entirety of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I don't really do holidays, and I don't identify with any sort of religions, so reading Lord of the Rings becomes my December sabbatical.
I just finished up Cinderella Ate my Daughter, which talks about how young girls are, from a young age, pressured into wearing pink, and being generally frilly. If you're into gender equality and feminism, it's a good read.
I've been meaning to start on 1Q84. I heard it was long, took place in Japan, and involves murder, I think. I'm not sure, but that was enough to make me interested. Have a copy of it, just need to dig in.

Loving Spirit ..It's about a girl and her horse that share a very special bond :)
-
I haven't picked up a book for a while, but would like to start reading again. I have a few books sitting aside, last one I started reading, but a friend of the family "borrowed" it before I could finish was "tigers child" by Torey Hayden, she is my favourite author, and I am really upset I now have to source another copy of the book so I can finish reading the story I started. So unfair >.<

Men I've Loved Before, by Adele Parks (http://www.adeleparks.com/MILB_book.html (http://www.adeleparks.com/MILB_book.html))
Hehe, I know, but I love reading light literature, it makes me relax :)
Oh and arena posts of course!!
-
I just sent back two books to the library because they were due soon, North of the DMZ, and The Cleanest Race.... I wasn't going to have a chance to finish them. I already extended it 3 times XD, I just never get the time to read. ... I wish I could buy them for my kindle, but I don't wanna pay $10-$15 for a digital book. I'm only a read once, never again type of person.
Bah. Today is a lazy day, perfect for reading. I guess I'll watch a movie instead. :O
-
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin. Its the fifth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series :)

Hubby just finished that one, he really seemed to like it.
I'm on the... 3rd (I think) book of the Wheel of Time series. It's good :)

The ones I had at my library had really cool covers with the characters turning into animals on it. Unfortunately I'm reading them on my kindle this time around, so no sweet covers :/

lol, basically. Each book takes about and hour to read, and they don't take any brain cells to comprehend. Although, they're kinda like Disney movies or Harry Potter in that I realize reading them now that they're a lot deeper than I realized when I was little. They actually have a lot of torture and death, plus some really hard decisions and deep concepts. So I like them :D
-
I'm currently reading Dragoncharm by Graham Edwards - its pretty good so far, a bit slow though which has caused me longer than normal to get through the book.
I'm really looking forward to reading the Song of Ice and Fire series when I finish reading Dragoncharm. I''m one of those people who can't read more than 1 book at a time, I just can't submerge myself into more than 1 book or else I don't feel as connected. If that makes sense.
-
Dragon forge by James Wyatt^^
-
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin. Its the fifth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series :)
I love this series! :D My brother picked up a brand new version of the latest book at a school fair for me for $1. I couldn't believe my luck because it was still a new release at the time :frolic:
-
I just finished all 3 of the Hunger Games books. You guys should check them out! Really great books and the movie comes out in March!
Also, for anyone with a Kindle who loves to read a variety of stuff...I'd like to make a suggestion.
Pixel of Ink https://www.facebook.com/#!/PixelofInk and Pixel of Ink-Young Edition https://www.facebook.com/#!/PixelofInkYoungEdition
Also Inspired Reads https://www.facebook.com/#!/InspiredReads
If you have facebook, you can like their page and they let you know about free books on Amazon. Sometimes the books are only free for a day or so....I try to check every day so that I can buy the ones that sound interesting that are free. Pixel of Ink also has a website for those of you who don't have facebook. www.pixelofink.com
They are great resources for free books. I got my Kindle for Christmas and I don't have time to constantly check Amazon for the deals. I currently have almost 300 free books.
-
I'm reading an anthology set in Valdemar, "Inside the Vale and other stores." Edited by Mercedes Lackey of course. Loving it, and missing new full-length Valdemar novels.
I remember Animorphs! I LOVED those books when I was a tween! The TV series they made out if it though, notsomuch.
-
I've been reading a lot of grimdark/horror stuff recently, and I also just finished reading a 4 year old fanfiction I wrote, laughing my butt off. I never realised at the time how bad it was XD
-
I'm reading the Hobbit. I have about 20 pages left but I keep falling asleep so I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it! D:
(I'm not bored, I just have insomnia so i grab sleep where I can)
-
You guys have me wanting to reread the Hobbit!
I'm half way through Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' which is good but LONG so I'm taking a bit of a break and I read "The Red Queen" by Philippa Gregory, I wasn't a big fan of some of her other books but I really enjoyed the 'cousins war' books.
I'm now reading 'Inheritance' by Christopher Paolini and it's not too bad. I stared reading that series and was fairly disappointed with Brisinger... It seemed like there was a lot of extra that didn't need to be there and it dragged on and on and on for me. This book is SO much better, I can't put it down and enjoy every page.
-
The arena since my child keeps forgetting to give me the book I want to read. Or the sports pages. LOL
-
I'm reading my latest issue of Grazia.. :coffee:
-
What a great idea for a thread!
I read several books recently:
The Werewolf's Guide to Life: A Manual for the newly bitten.
Poseidon's Steed (a wonderful nonfiction on seahorses)
Greyhound (about a 12 yr old boy traveling across the country alone)
-
I've not been reading much, I'm still making my way through a Song of Ice and Fire and I've been reading Small Gods from time to time, I have too many books and not enough time. :P
-
Twilight.
I just recently saw the movies(I know I am behind) and I figured I should read the books to see what I might have missed.
-
Tuney, Greyhound sounds like an interesting read.
Ponylady, the Twilight books are better than the movies, imo. I hope you enjoy them :)
-
I'm currently in the middle of Tokyo Vice by Jake Adelstein. Before that, the last book I read was Three Kingdoms (unabridged Moss Roberts translation) by Luo Guanzhong. That one took ages to get through.
-
You guys have me wanting to reread the Hobbit!
Dooooo it! The Hobbit is my favorite book of all time :)
And fun fact: Christopher Paolini used to be my Aunt and Uncle's neighbor! They bought one of his self-published copies of Eragon when he came to their door with a little red wagon full of his books. He even signed it :) So I read their copy before it was available through a mainstream publishing company :accomplished: I haven't read Inheritance yet, since I like to only read one book at a time. As soon as I'm done with LOTR, I think I'll start the series over to remind myself what the heck is going on :P
-
Zenna that's so cool! It's amazing how young he is for the series he's created. I really am enjoying the final book, its a real page-turner. In fact, it's cutting in to my sleep because I keep saying "just one more chapter, and then I'll sleep" but instead I don't put it down until I'm cross-eyed from exhaustion. He did a recap in the beginning that catches you up pretty well. I was worried since it had been so long since the last book too but his recap was great. I'm not the fastest reader around so rereading them would've taken me to long X) I re-watched the Eragon movie the other day too though so that helped too in a cheating kind of way. I hope they make more of his books into movies. Hard to do some of them without a huge budget though.
I'm so excited about the Hobbit movie coming out so I'll be sure to reread it before I see the movie. My dad gave me an awesome copy as a kid with beautiful illustrations. So much to read, so little time!
-
Welp, I finished the Hobbit last night and I think I'll move onto the Lord of the Rings trilogy....wish me luck!
-
Ponylady, the Twilight books are better than the movies, imo. I hope you enjoy them :)
Thanks, so far I agree!! There is just something about a book that is always better than the movie.
-
I'm reading "Rivers of London" by Ben Aaronovitch, the German version. I really like the book.
-
Zenna that is so awesome! I'm a huge fan of Eragon, it's my most favourite book in the world! Every now and again I re read it :)
-
I just finished all 3 of the Hunger Games books. You guys should check them out! Really great books and the movie comes out in March!
Oh me too!! I loved them!!! I was a little dissappointed with the last one but i'll leave it at that. I can't wait for the movie though!!
-
I've nearly finished 'From The Corner of his Eye' by Dean Koontz. Not as good as some of his others - it just hasn't really gripped me - but that may be because I can't sit and read for hours on end like I used to :(
-
I'd like to read Battle Royale someday, but not sure I can stomach it
-
Reading Mockingjay at the moment, book 3 of the hunger games! My first copy was a misprint, though... So I had to wait until I got a proper copy! The wait was agony! xD
-
Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin.
I've been enthralled with the series since I saw Game of throne on HBO and even more so as I get through the books. He's an amazing writer!
-
I just got my son started on reading The Hobbit. He's 11 and has never really been a big fan of reading, despite the fact that the rest of our family reads all the time. He just couldn't find any books that seemed interesting to him. My brother brought up The Hobbit, which he first read back when he was in the 3rd grade, and I added it to my son's Kindle. He's been reading it for a few days now and he actually is enjoying it.
-
Re-reading "Reckless" by Cornelia Funke (I want her new book...)
And trying to read "Wicked" but... it is not friendly... I can't read more than one paragraph and get bored with it...
In my list is "The Abyss" and "The vampire" by Wolfgang Hohlbein (I need the last two of this serie...)
-

Yep me too! Just started it tonight. Finiished book 2 last night. I just hope the movie is at least half as good as the book and I'm hoping for a pg13 rating too. I hope they don't kiddie proof it.
-
I recently finished the Hunger Games trilogy myself...fantastic read.
Now I'm reading The Girl Who Played with Fire, the new Monster High book, and I'm re-reading Persuasion...as an old English major, I like some variety...haha!
-
Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Well, I'm on the second book of the series but it's all in one book =P Haven't been reading often though.
-
And trying to read "Wicked" but... it is not friendly... I can't read more than one paragraph and get bored with it...
The first part of Wicked is pretty slow. The following two books are much better though :) Plus the 4th one just came out and I ave it on my "to read" list. I already have it but it's not next in line to be read lol xD I just finished Dexter by Design (the books that the Dexter show is based on!). Now, I'm reading Dead Reckoning by Charlainne Harris (the books that Trueblood is based on). I seem to really like books that are based on shows/movies lol. Next on my list is The second Blue Bloods book :)
-
There is a lot of talk about Hunger Games. To me, it rather sounds like a ripoff of Battle Royale...
-
Various drafts for publication. I'll know these books by heart soon.
-
Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. It's amazing so far. n_n
-
I'm slowly working my way through a large pile of Stephen King books.
I'm on Skeleton Crew right now, one of his short story compilations. I just can't get enough of his writing. xD I'm also reading a bunch of true crime stuff on the side, I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.
I really wish I had more time to read. I'm a massive bookworm, but I only have an hour set aside each day for books D:
-
"Alice in Deadland", by Mainak Dhar.
It's... different. But since I've started reading it, I have to now finish it. I'm stubborn like that. Even if I don't like a book I'm reading, I HAVE to finish reading it.
-
I'm reading Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook. :p I'm not really that interested in RPG gaming but tis research! I'm helping a friend start up an RPG club on campus and they all want to play pathfinder. ... I'm sick of being out of the loop.. tis boring and I feel like an idiot sitting there not knowing what they are talking about.
-
I put down "The Spark" mid-book and started reading a book I received for free called "The Cross and the Switchblade." Interesting read, so far.
-
I'm reading Firebringer and I'm also reading Wolf Speaker in the Circle of Magic series. I've read both several times before.
-
The "Dragonlance Chronicles"! My friend turned me onto the series and I'm really enjoying it... but, I love me some fantasy literature! :)
-
im reading the wreacker by clive cussler at the moment i love his stuff
-
DragonLance is wonderful^^ I recently got a friend at work into them myself. Gotta tell ya, you're in for a long haul. There are a lot of books in that series.
-
I just found a dusty old book called, 'Thunderhead'. It looks interesting... I'm starting it tonight.
-
I'm reading "The Silmarillion", which is practically Tolkien's bible to the Lord of the Rings universe :') I've read it once before, but there's just so much information at once that it probably can't be understood on any level from just one read through. But what I did get from just reading it once has done so much to enrich his other writings on Middle Earth! It's incredible, what this guy had in his mind.
Edit(s): I hate typos.
-
Finishing up the Hunger Games trilogy. Then going to finish the other two books from Stieg Larsson's trilogy.
-

Oh me too!! I loved them!!! I was a little dissappointed with the last one but i'll leave it at that. I can't wait for the movie though!!
I just finished the first book! I really want to splurge and buy the other two, but I'm trying to be good and not go overboard on book buying. Maybe I'll borrow it from the library instead. ;)
-
I sooo badly want to go to the store and buy "Ameritopia" by Mark Levin. It just came out a few days ago. *searches under couch cushions for change*
-
I am reading The Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter. It's part of her Lords of the Underworld series and I adore her books.
-
Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon at the moment. I needed a new series to read after devouring the Song of Ice and Fire series just before the holidays.
-
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin. Its the fifth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series :)
Hubby just finished that one, he really seemed to like it.
I'm on the... 3rd (I think) book of the Wheel of Time series. It's good :)
In the middle of A Dance with Dragons.
Wheel of Time is one of my all time favorites. There's a few books that can drag in the middle of the series. They pick up again later. Can't wait for the final book, #14. I think Brandon Sanderson has done a great job.
BTW, great topic! Thanks for starting.

I have had such a difficult time with The Silmarillion. Did you read it straight through or stop and start?
-
I am reading Seekers by Erin Hunter. I am addicted to her writing. Love the Worriors sreies. YELLOW FANG WILL LIVE ON IN MY DREAMS
-
Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin.
I've been enthralled with the series since I saw Game of throne on HBO and even more so as I get through the books. He's an amazing writer!
I'm reading (well, re-reading) A Storm of Swords too! XD I've got about a hundred pages to the end. Since I refuse to pay extra for HBO just for one show, I've been consoling myself by re-reading the series. It's been over a decade since I read the first three books, so in some ways it's like I'm reading them for the first time again!
But then I've got a dilemma--I borrowed the fourth book to read when it came out, so I don't yet own that one or the fifth book. And I'm trying soooo hard to not spend any money right now, but I hate to leave off in the middle of the series as it currently stands! Also, I didn't much care for the fourth book, but I know I should re-read it before starting on the fifth one....So I basically am all grumpyface over not having a book I don't want to read anyways. MY LIFE IS PAIN Y'ALL. XD
-
I just started The Fellowship of the Rings. wish me luck! XD
-
I just finished up reading Jurassic Park. Before that I read Quitter, by Jon Acuff (which I think EVERYONE who doesn't currently have their dream job should read). Right now I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series. I'm almost done with Order of the Phoenix!
-
I am reading book 6 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward. I am addicted to these books!
-
Doing a re-read of Starfleet: Year One. A lovely little piece of literature.
-
I am reading book 6 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward. I am addicted to these books!
I love that series. I need to start on book nine which is in my backlog pile of books. I have heard rumors that Blay and Quinn are getting their own novel and I so hope that's true!
-
I've been reading The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner. Not the easiest book to read! But good so far.
Edit: I also just recently finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Couldn't put it down and ended up buying all five books. Worth it though!
-

Such a awesome series....
Sound and the Fury is one of my faves from assigned reading in school.
-
I've been reading free ebooks I found on Goodreads. Currently I'm on the Don't Read in the Closet Anthology.
I love anthologies, they're great for trying out new authors.
-
Peter Pan! Lol. I never read it before and it's a classic so... thought why not? It's cute
-
I am reading Rakkety Tam in the Redwall series. I got so behind on Redwall without even realizing it. Rakkety Tam was published in 04 and this is my first time reading it. D: I haven't read any of the others published since then either. But...anyway. Squirrels with Scottish accents are fun and win for the wolverine villain and his white fox and ermine minions.
-
Inheritance
-
Before that I read Quitter, by Jon Acuff (which I think EVERYONE who doesn't currently have their dream job should read).
Thanks for the recc! I love reading things like that, especially as someone who's chasing dreams. I'll have to look this book up!
-
I mostly read non-fiction science and nature books. Right now I'm reading The Encyclopedia of Sharks.
-
Before that I read Quitter, by Jon Acuff (which I think EVERYONE who doesn't currently have their dream job should read).
Thanks for the recc! I love reading things like that, especially as someone who's chasing dreams. I'll have to look this book up!
You will love it! It's by the guy who runs the "Stuff Christians Like" blog, which I thought was going to turn me off at first, but it is very religion-lite and full of incredibly helpful motivation and tips!
-
"The Novice" by Trudi Cannavan. Good inspiration for my one-day-to-be webcomic ! :)
-
I just finished Terry Pratchett's latest - Snuff, and I'm currently reading Anthony and Cleopatra.
-
I'm reading the 4th book of the House of Night series by PC Cast. I'm becoming addicted to getting these books. I hate buying new copies of books but I had to splurge on getting book 4 to be able to get to book 5 which I already have waiting for me to get to! lol
I'm also listening to the Artemis Fowl book series on cd at work again for the 20th time. There are certain book series I like to keep reading/listening to like Artemis Fowl series, Harry Potter, Janet Evanovich's Plum series, Twilight series, and many others. :)
-
The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan! I loved his Percy Jackson series, and this new series is really standing up! I like to read pre-teen and teen fiction in between the heavier stuff. And what I;m not reading AT THE MOMENT, but I suggest you ALL read is The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. And don't be swayed by the summary. It's not a stupid romance book (even though I like stupid romance books lol).
-
Am I Hungry? by Dr. Michelle May. She's a nutritionist that specialized in helping people get back in touch with their intuitive eating cycle rather than dieting. I've found it to be really informative and it certainly has helped me stop 'emotional' eating as much.
-
Finished Peter Pan yesterday lol. I just started The Hobbit!
-
I just finished reading the first two books of The Secret of the Unicorn Queen series, Swept Away and Sun Blind. Also I read half of The Handmaid's Tale on Google books, had to look at a synopsis online to find out what happened in the rest of it. I've been meaning to read it for awhile. I haven't decided yet if I'll try to find it at the library to finish or not, it was kind of depressing.
It's been awhile since I read the Hunger Games books, but I really liked them. Except for the last half of the last book.
-
Right now I am reading the 6th book "Tempted" in the House Of Night series by P.C.Cast and Kristin Cast.
-
I am also reading Wheel of Time- I am on book 6 or 7 lol. I lucked out and bought them from a guy that was getting them for his e-reader. I am taking it slow even though I want to be caught up by the time the final one comes out this year. The first time I tried reading book 1 I actually gave up- last year my friend encouraged me to try them again (it had been several years) and now I am so glad he did. I hope Jordan's wife/estate decides to let other authors write more books in the setting.
I also read Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I thought it was a really good and different approach to fantasy- it is hard to explain without reading it though! The story isn't centered around a war and it is about a Chronicler that comes to hear a man's story. Some of the most exciting (I think) parts of the book feel like a battle scene but are about the guy playing his lute/guitar/ something with strings (lol).
Book two just came out and I am actually waiting to read it until more come out- they are being released really slowly, which is confusing since the series is already written, they are just re-editing it (the author wanted it to be all one book and they told him it was too big!).
I wish there was more Wheel of Time stuff... I need to check out the website. *makes note to self*
Anyone else out there that still thinks holding a real book is way better than an e-reader? I think there is no comparison and will be reading printed books as long as they make them!
-
I was able to find Ameritopia at the Chapters store. So I've been slowly reading it. Not one that can be easily breezed through, I have to read segments at a time and let it absorb. XD
-
I just finished The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: The Mysterious Howling. Next up is Revelations in the Blue Bloods series. I recently became super addicted after one of my friends said she has read all of them and loved them :D
-
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin. Its the fifth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series :)
This!
I have the digital version on my iPhone, that's how I've read the entire series. It intrigues my 80's brain that I can carry a library in my pocket  Saving trees is also a nice bonus! I haven't seen the series yet but I think we're going to buy it when it comes out on DVD in about a month.
I'd like to read Harry Potter all the way through again now that all the books are out but I don't want to wag those hefty suckers around and Rowling seems pretty adamant about not releasing them as eBooks.
I love the LOTR books too and have been meaning to read them again but I always seem to have something new to read instead. I'll get around to it one day ^.^
I am reading Rakkety Tam in the Redwall series.
The Redwall series is so cute! I have a ton of them but I haven't read that one in particular.
I also love the Warriors series but I think I'm a couple books behind. The first set was the best in my opinion but I keep reading them anyway because I love cat books ^.^ Catwings is next on my kitty reading list whenever I find a job and can afford to order from Amazon again ^^;

Reading American Gods By Neil Gaiman and Frankenstein! Almost done with both. I'm looking to pick up grimm fairy tales from barnes and noble soon.

The original Grimm and Anderson fairy tales are awesome. Plus, it's great being able to shock people when you point out how much Disney and children's literature has butchered them. My mother was absolutely shocked when I told her what really happened in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid.

I'm reading Game of Thrones from the sond of ice and fire series. It's very good, but entirely too many horses get killed :/
I'd like to read Harry Potter all the way through again now that all the books are out but I don't want to wag those hefty suckers around and Rowling seems pretty adamant about not releasing them as eBooks.
She is releasing them, but it's online only, so not very useful. I LOVE the Harry Potter books, but I'm one of those rare oldschool folks who prefers books on paper. I was pretty tempted by a kobo this year, though.
Any fans of Douglas Adams out there? The hitchhiker's guide is one that I can read over and over.
