Pony Corral / Re: Is it better to put MLP on hiatus or not?
« on: September 17, 2020, 06:07:35 PM »
The thing about brand fatigue and My Little Pony is that it is primarily a toy aimed at the 3-8 age range.  Which means that there are always new kiddos coming in to the brand all the time.  So while brand fatigue could apply to the older fan base, there will always be room for ponies on the toys isle.  Even if it’s down to only 1 shelf now.

Really I think PL is as much a break as Hasbro is ever going to do at this point.  And since PL isn’t really my cup of tea, I’ve been treating it as something of a break.

Not necessarily. Too much exposure and fans old and young get tired of it.

The influx of comic movies these past five years comes to mind when every three movies is a comic movie, and two more are announced in the making whether they're made or not.

TTG has had schedules that took up literal days at a time with very little inbetween. Absolutely insane.

The mane suxx is ignored on the shelves and little kids pass by without sparing it a second glance. Going for toylines with more variety.

So yes, kids do get tired of businesses hyper obsessiveness.

I didn’t mean that there isn’t going to be an ebb and flow of popularity in the brand (thus the 1 shelf comment) or that Hasbro shouldn’t mix up the characters they offer.  But there is always going to be a certain percentage of children who just want a colorful pony.  And since MLP was the first of its kind and is a household name, there will always be adults who will grab MLP as a gift just because of brand recognition.

Does anyone have the dcpi for the two latest sets?  Not for the individual ponies but for the whole set?

I must be one of the only people who actually likes the looking up pose!

All the same, I did vote for Skyflier.  I feel a little guilty about it because she was a childhood pony.  But for me it all came down to the colors.  Her peachy/orange body color just doesn’t do anything for me.  And orange is my least favorite color.

I just picked up the retro tshirt at 5 Below.  For those interested, it wasn’t with the wall of other tshirts.  I nearly missed it because of that.  It and a couple other tshirts were on a middle display with some toys.  The sizes are S to XL but are definitely junior sizes.  Smallest XL I’ve ever seen.  Think I may try  to make it into a pillow cover.

Pony Corral / Re: Are there any positive aspects to appreciate from g4?
« on: September 07, 2020, 12:02:58 PM »
The Pegasus wings on the playful sized ponies are very sweet.  Just the right proportions, not too clunky and very cute.

I have very mixed feelings about the blind bags.  On the one hand, I wish that Hasbro hadn’t decided to concentrate all of the “collectibility” of the line into the blind bag sized ponies to the detriment of the brushables.  However, I loved the FIM collection.  This is mostly because of the train.  I loved the train because I have spent a lot of time assisting my parents with their massive Christmas train display.  So the combination of the train and the FIM collection allowed me to make my own 8 foot pony train display.  Though I do agree that three dimensional play sets would have been even more ideal.  I really wish they had gotten around to doing Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash’s houses.  Or at least Fluttershy’s with extra animal friends.

G4 is also the only generation so far to give us a carousel for the brushables.  (G1 had one for the petites.). But really, a carousel for ponies just makes so much sense that I can’t believe it isn’t a standard play set for every generation.  I’d have preferred for the g4 set to be even bigger and more traditional carousel shaped.  (I even bought an old matchbox carousel several years ago to customize for the g4 pones but I’ve never gotten around to working on it.)

I appreciate the inclusion of the hippogriffs.  I personally would have preferred they were more on model with the ponies with their own symbols but I really appreciate that Hasbro was willing to try out some other brushable toys past the usual earth, unicorn, Pegasus, and “mermaid” pony that they have done in every generation.

In regards to the show:
When I first saw it, I really loved it.  It was clearly aimed at a slightly older audience than the g3 specials which I appreciated.  While I have watched every episode, it really did become something of a chore in the later seasons, with a few bright spots.  I have always characterized myself as more of a collector/fan of the brand rather than a fan of the show.

But things I like specifically about the show:

The songs!  There are very few of the songs that I don’t like.  The more songs the better, I always say 😆

The walking and running cycles are really nice.  I appreciate that someone actually researched how a horse walks/runs.

The Kirin.  I really wish that we had gotten some Kirin toys and I hope that they make it into G5.

My best luck is usually at flea markets.  There are still a lot of misses but flea markets give the most bang for your time.  *edit to clarify that the kind of flea markets I’m talking about are the kind that pop up only on the weekend or once month and tend to be outdoors.  Not the kind that are permanent and indoors.  I’ve only had luck with one of those just the once. (And that was the kind of store that looked like it was owned by a hoarder and I had to dig for the ponies in a back corner and hope that nothing fell on me while I did it.)

Unfortunately, none of the thrift stores in my area are the kind that sell much in the way of toys.

Garage sales are almost always too much work.  Having to look them up, plan out a route, drive all over, only to come up empty handed.  Now I only do garage sales when I see a listing that either specifies My Little Pony or there are pictures that look promising.  I did one time get up early and go to a a garage sale that advertised loads of (G4) mlp and even though I got there at the start time I still didn’t beat a couple of ladies who I absolutely know run a booth at my local flea market.  But it was all good, they went for the larger toys like the talking ponies and the fashion styles.  I got my pick of the brushables.  In a way, it’s kind of reassuring.  Their prices aren’t unreasonable and they do all the work of driving all over town.

I would also advise checking your area’s Craigslist regularly.  The older crowd may be more comfortable with it and I have twice come home with two large hauls from people selling off their adult children’s collections.

Pony Corral / Re: Pony brand collabs- what do you desire?
« on: September 02, 2020, 05:02:51 PM »
...if Hasbro wanted to use the 'Japanese' element, they'd throw pinkie pie out in a kimono...

In a way they already did.  There was that giant Pinkie Pie celebrating the Year of the Horse.

For collabs I’d like to see, I’ve recently gotten back into Breyer model horses (mostly for the traditional sized unicorns) and I wouldn’t mind seeing a model horse painted up like a popular mlp character... so long as it isn’t PP or RD.

I went with March Daffodil but December Ponsettia is a close second.

I sincerely hope we get a whole new cast but I’m not going to get too excited until there is actual confirmation.

 Re: non-pony cast members.

I actually hope that the majority of the primary cast remain ponies.  I like My Little Pony *because* they are ponies.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the other creatures as supporting cast.  But I don’t want half the cast to be non-pony.  To me it would be like having half the cast of Smurfs not be Smurfs.

That being said, I think that a good number of the species in G4 should have been subspecies of pony rather than an entirely different species, with their own symbols and everything.  Particularly, the Kirin, the hippogriffs/sea ponies (and make them separate species this time!) the Breezies and the zebras.

Pony Corral / Re: Figure, figurine or doll
« on: August 26, 2020, 09:11:37 PM »
I guess if I had to choose I’d call them “pony toys.”  I agree with the doll sentiment.  I’ve seen them referred to as dolls in articles and interviews and such.  Even Bonnie Zacherle has a refrain she uses in interviews I’ve seen comparing her idea for a pony toy to a doll.  But I also have this slight inward twinge when I hear that word used for ponies.  I also tend to equate “dolls” with something human shaped.

And just for fun, here is what Merriam-Webster has to say

Quote
a small-scale figure of a human being used especially as a child’s plaything

So you know by that definition, an action figure, no matter how masculine, is closer to being a doll than a pony toy is

As I said in the other thread, these aren’t my thing.  But the princess are really tempting!

I notice that Luna has a horn but Celestia doesn’t.  But then Celestia has that really nice suggestion of wings on her sleeves.

I won’t get them because they generally aren’t my thing but Luna and Celestia are by far the most tempted I’ve been to getting one.

I never thought the Lame Six could become interesting again but here we are! I am happy about those awesome customs becoming a reality, I will ignore the fact it's just the usual suspects with a new gimmick.

My Re-Ment skeleton dog will go great with AJ

These are not my thing so for once I’m glad it’s just the mane6.  I might have been a little miffed to actually get a new or uncommon character on a figure like this.
