Customs / Re: Price check - set of nine G1 customs
« on: November 01, 2022, 04:47:03 PM »
Thank you

Trouble is, it's going to be the hardest thing to calculate the actual time taken. The shortest time was five days for one (the first one done) but the others took quite a lot longer, researching certain costumes and hairstyles, and how to turn them from human to pony (actually very tricky!). Most of the materials I already had hanging about (I can be somewhat of a hoarder) and only had to buy one length of ribbon and two pieces of material.

The buyer already knows how many ponies are in the set, so I won't have any problems there.

Luckily she requested some time to get some money together, so I don't have to be right in there with a price, but I ought to let her know soon about my plan B possibly not being the actual plan after all.

Customs / Price check - set of nine G1 customs
« on: October 27, 2022, 05:28:12 AM »
Okay, so first off let me say I never intended to sell these guys, but oh boy, problems.

I made a set of G1 customs based off the TV shows "Ghosts" to enter the custom contest at UK Ponycon. Now, I love Ghosts, and I love ponies, and it was never my intention to sell them, as I already cleared a shelf in my cabinet to home them.

They won *eep* seems they were quite popular.

When I was packing them up to take home, I was approached by someone asking if I would sell them. I told her that I did kinda want to keep them myself, and so we came up with a solution - I would make another set for her (bearing in mind it took me about a year, on and off to make the current set).

But.

About a week ago, I had a bleed in one of my eyes, which has affected my vision quite brutally. Still waiting to be seen at an eye clinic, despite my optician making an urgent referral across  but that's another story. Basically though, I can't see well enough to even make a start on another custom set, and I have no idea how long it will take to get the eye sorted out.

So I've decided that I might be better off selling the current set, and making another set for myself, should my eye permit. But I have no idea how much I ought to charge for them. Bearing in mind that I honestly never intended to sell them, therefore some bits here and there aren't quite 100% perfect. They are all pretty well glued into their clothes  my dressmaking skills being basic.

Anyway, pictures. Any kind of price assistance is welcome. TY.

Customs / Beheading assistance required!
« on: April 26, 2019, 09:50:58 AM »
I love beheading ponies, heheh. But this one has me totally beaten.

I'm trying to get the head off of a G4 seapony - you know the ones that have a clear body with colourful liquid inside, and the liquid 'disappears' when you turn the pony upside down?

I'd guess there must be a chamber inside the head, that the coloured liquid goes into when the pony is turned. I have to assume this, cos the head is attached so well that it doesn't turn. But I want that head off, because there is such a stupid open-mouthed lollopy expression on there that I don't want my custom to have  :P

Has anybody tried removing one of these seapony heads before, and if so, how did you do it, please? I've tried hottest tap water, and then boiling water, in a vain attempt to soften the glue even a tiny bit - if I could get even a tiny gap, I can get something in there that has a chance of dissolving the glue properly. That hasn't worked - I guess Hasbro do NOT want these heads to come off!

Haha, my mum would be so chuffed if this actually happened

I remember you telling me this and bringing one when we met up in Manchester :)

Coastalot!!!!!! That is brilliant, do you remember which pony was Costalot? :lmao:

Love pkw xxx

Costalot has to catch on. I want to know which one she was too, maybe we can use it :D

Costalot was a Romper, no symbols  sadly for her, as a result of my mum goading me into it, I painted a symbol onto her. Oops.

She got a green £ with gold glitter.

Years later, when I realised what I had done to her, I removed that, but it has stained her quite a bit. It's one of those instances where you just want to reach back into the past and give yourself a good slap in the chops for your own idiocy.

She also has biro ink on one leg, after somebody with ink on their fingers picked her up to have a closer look at her

That was a good read  :) I enjoyed that.

I bought two varients - one Happy Tails and one Princess - new from a TRU in south London, on two separate occasions. I remember that in particular because, both times, my mum was very offhand about me buying 'funny' ponies - ones she didn't think were real ones - and actually naming one of them 'Costalot' because she was convinced it was a waste of money as it was 'not a real pony', despite being in a proper box. My princess even came with a bushwoolie, which was what made her sure it couldn't be real, as neither of us had ever seen one until that time.

We both know better now, of course!

Customs / Are there any visually impaired customisers about?
« on: March 05, 2018, 06:18:20 AM »
The reason I ask is, that I now find that I am one  :(

I've known for a good many years that I have cataracts, and go to the hospital every six months to get checked out for another eye problem (diabetic retinopathy). The retinopathy checks involve having photos taken to check the veins at the backs of my eyes, and for the last two years, I've had to have stronger and stronger drops put in for the doctors to be able to see through the growing cataracts.

Well, now they have suddenly decided to get much worse, and quickly. Over the last nine months I have noticed my sight deteriorating quite a lot. And now it's got so bad that I can't see to do customising any more

I can barely see the plug holes for hair, certainly I can no longer do any eye repainting. Sad thing is, I'm knee deep in a pair of customs that I MUST get finished to give as a gift at the end of the month. I intend to do this, no matter what. The hair and eyes are about done, though I suspect my poor non-pony OH will have to check the quality of the eye painting and maybe have to do a touch up on the eyes tonight when he gets home from work.

I will be doing no more customs after this pair is done, until I get my cataract surgery done, which won't be until the end of the year.

I just wondered if anybody else with any eye issues does/did do customising? How do you manage, if you still do customs? What do you do instead, if you've had to stop?

I've been making customs for almost 15 years now, and I will be quite sad to stop, if only temporarily.

I first started customising in 2003, after visiting a pony website run by TicTacToe, and thinking "That looks like fun!".

This is my first custom. Her name is Aqua Jewel, and she was made with whatever stuff I had handy  Humbrol model paint, hair from some hair accessories from Claires, and embroidery rhinestones glued on. I didn't have any tiny brushes, so her eyes never got redone.

About a year later, I wondered if two of the best loves of my life - ponies and beads - could go together. So I decided to find out! The result was this lovely lady, Mississippi. She has beaded hair, but as I used sewing cotton rather than beading thread, the cotton has stretched and there are gaps at the top of each plug now. Also, as I didn't 'weave' the bead threads together ( a technique I am still trying to perfect!) there areas where the beads are just glued rather than threaded, so has bald patches where the glued-only beads have come loose. She has to live in a Ziploc to prevent any more from getting lost.

But she really worked for me. Nearly all the customs I do now are 'beadies'. Sadly my output is not huge, as I am now a stay at home mum to two children, but I do occasionally get something done.

This is not my newest custom, but is fairly recent. Her name is Watermelon Martini.

I think my proudest moment was being told that I'd been chosen to be one of the artists who will be exhibiting at a pony themed art exhibition in a proper art gallery, happening later this year. Although, saying that, I've not heard from the gallery for a while, I guess I may have to email them to find out if it's still going ahead!

Off Topic / Re: Jeepers Creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
« on: February 17, 2017, 02:57:31 PM »
I've worn glasses since I was six years old - I am short sighted, and my eyes are getting steadily worse as time goes on  :( I've had four, maybe five, goes of laser surgery - not corrective, but preventative, as I have early stage glaucoma, and if I dont have repetitive goes of that lasering, I could end up with strained and/or burst blood vessels which would cause permanant black patches in my vision. This actually did happen to a former work manager who is now registered blind, so I make very sure that I go for regular eyecheck ups at the hospital.

To add to that joy, I have recently been diagnosed with cataract in my right eye.

I'm doing well  :lookround:

I *think* savetheponies has one? I keep meaning to keep an eye out for one and then keep forgetting to do so

I believe I'll be seeing her on Saturday  :) I'll ask her then.

I was getting all keen then, thinking I had a OOAK. Still, if there are only two known ones, that's not so bad.

IDK if this counts, but I have a Moonstone (bog standard UK release, I assume, she's not my childhood one) that has lilac eyes instead of dark pink ones.

Here is a somewhat fuzzy photo of her, the only one I have currently (she's in storage like all of my other ponies).

Whoa, I must have that backcard somewhere (I have one from each set of ponies, thanks to my mum being very forward seeing!) and I've never noticed that before.

It looks so cool! If I ever find doubles of the appropriate ponies, I am SO going to do hair reversals on them *plots* mind you, I'd also have to find the other ones so I could put a stripe in the tails of the ones that don't have to have mane changes. this could get expensive

Pony Corral / Re: Any pony regrets?
« on: November 18, 2016, 04:53:56 AM »
I have two big regrets, both caused by my silliness.

I had to choose between getting Baby Cotton Candy and NBBE Baby Heart Throb once, as a child, while out shopping. I chose CC  my reason was that at the time I had mummy CC, but Heart Throb wasn't sold new in the UK, to me she was just another pony in the comic, and I wanted baby CC to go with her mum.

The amount of baby CCs I have got in job lots is unreal. I've never again seen NBBE Heart Throb without also seeing how much she's being sold for and going - can't afford that.

The other time, I was out again, and found the pony friends, on card, in a cheap shop in London. Mum was all keen to get them, but I said "those aren't actual ponies" so we never got them.

Yup, I feel pretty daft now

Pony Corral / Re: Minty will be coming to Build-a-Bear!

I've had to get two Mintys, cos my daughter was going to steal miine :( naturally she rooked me of so many extras when we went to buy hers - the MLP theme tune box, a mint scented thing to put inside as well. Must remember to never take her to Build a Bear ever again! It's too expensive

« on: August 04, 2016, 09:46:46 AM »
I use Facebook. You can either have a link to the picture (and only the picture), people who aren't on your freinds list on FB can still see the pic if it's the direct picture link, or have it as an image on the page you're posting to.

I used to use Photobucket and it is just dire now. Haven't even logged in there since I realised FB pictures could be put on pretty much any website out there  :)
