Late last year, I realized that my current shelf setup wasn't going to last me very long at the rate my collection has grown, and I wanted something that looked a little bit more uniform than the assortment of shelves I had, so I decided I'd redo the shelf and riser arrangement to something that would give me even more space than before.
Once I figured out where I wanted things and how I wanted it to look, I had to measure all the different kinds of ponies I had so I could make sure I was using up as much space as I could. Then I had to find out the dimensions of where the holes for the pegs for the shelf risers would go.
After that was finished, then came the hard part of actually making it. I started out with some Billy bookcases from Ikea and re-used the last shelf risers I made. Then I had to make some more risers out of craft board from Lowe's, cut them to length, cut slots for the pins to hold the risers in place, and drill the holes in the shelves for the pins to go in.
In all, I had to drill 132 holes, Route 68 slots, Cutoff 16 boards and then put on three coats of wood stain on each one to match the bookcase. And you have to do it in such a way that your measurements are very close to what they should be, or else things won't fit.
It took about a month to finish, but here it is, my new main display!

It's kind of hard to show all of the detail in photos since the shelves are all black
Still some more work left to do, though. I got my display for the smaller stuff done, now all that's left is a place for playsets and plushes. But that's a lot less of a challenge.

Looks good! Gotta love a job well done,eh? Can't wait to see all the ponies on there. You must be so proud to have such a large collection!
-
Great work on those shelves! I bet you can't wait to put all your ponies in there :)
-
I use Billy book cases as well, so I am very impressed by the work you did to take them to the next level and really customize them to suit your collection! Thanks for sharing these great shelves, will you share pictures of them filled soon?

That looks great I have a question though. It looks like you have slats going across the front of many shelves. Is that an optical illusion I am seeing? If they are there how will you get your ponies on those shelves if the slats are there? Does it open on the side? I have a friend that has a case where everything opens from the side rather than the front. Just curious as to what I was seeing. I would love to see them covered with pony goodness.

Oh okay I understand what I am seeing now. I have the worst eye sight and sometimes I can't tell what I am looking at. That is really going to maximize your space and provide a fabulous way to display all your collection. I would love to have something like that, but with cats the best thing for me has been cabinets.

How lovely! Can't wait to see them filled :D

These are SO cool. I hope you'll share more photos once you've started displaying your ponies!
I'm curious... can the woodstain leave marks on ponies after prolonged exposure? Or have you sealed them with something?
-
So much beautiful shelf space! Please take pictures when you've got your collection in there. Should be awe-inspiring.

The stain I bought already had sealer in it, so I didn't have to do it separately. I've not had any problems with the stain leaving marks on it and they've been on there since I finished my old setup for the bookcases about 2 years ago. I don't think they even got stained on the wall-mounted shelves I made and that was just spray paint.

The things we do for our ponies! Your shelves look great. I would love to see some pics when you put your collection in them :D

Since you all asked, I figured I'd give a little update. I still haven't gotten everything unpacked, but I've got everything for my main display mostly how I want it. I still need to do something for the plushes and playsets, and I also need to finish setting up the shelf with my Equestria Girls stuff. Luckily, the window into my bedroom has a large space that I'm able to put a couple of castles on, so I don't have to have more shelf space allocated to that.

I am seriously envious of your shelves! I have to rotate my herd.
They all really pop against that black too!

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I just finished putting up my full-sized Equestria Girls. These things take forever to set up, since you have to place them just right to keep them from falling down. I ended up having to make some shelf risers to keep it from taking up two whole rows of shelving. This time I went with something a lot faster, albeit more crude than the wood on my main shelves- cardboard.

I have more leeway with these risers, since you can't really see them once they're all filled up.

It may not have fit all of them in one shelf, but I got close.

The risers are a fantastic idea! I could use that for my own collection, actually...
-
Wow, they all good great! Awesome idea for the shelves.
