Kirin WIP update - Sculpting DONE! 6/25

Started a new sculpted custom as an anniversary gift for my hubby.  Our anniversary was actually last week (June 18th), but we both dropped the ball this year and didn't have anything ready for each other on time so I decided to take the time to make something nice.  His gift to me is in the mail (a portable airbrushing station!   ) so I still have a couple of days leeway.  The hard part was deciding what to make and then working out the design!     I have a dragon planned for his birthday in August, so I wanted something slightly less labor intensive.  So I decided on a kirin!     Yes, I am insane.

So here is the first pic!

Bait is all prepped, anchors for the three horns and the tail are set and the head is glued back on.  Sculpting will include scales and belly plates, cloven hooves and possibly some changes to the structure of the face.  I couldn't decide on color, so I asked him his favorite color and he said that he really likes black and red together.  So I am going with mainly red, then black and some touches of gold.  Whew!

Thanks girls!  I'll be able to make more progress on him tonight when hubby is gone for the evening. I'm itching to get back to him!!  He's burning a hole in my brain!

So far horns and hooves are sculpted, tail base is on and many many scales are placed!  I foresee a couple more hours of sculpting before I'm ready to sand a few rough edges and then start painting.

I've decided to post the WIPs on my sculpted customs for two reasons really: firstly to get a little feedback from those of you out there whose sculpting skills I admire and strive to emulate, and to help out other newbies like me to learn the process and hopefully learn from my mistakes and feedback that I am given. 

So please, any and all constructive criticism heartily welcomed!! 

PS - I canNOT figure out why that second pic is sideways!  I swear I rotated it (and saved it!!) in PSP before uploading.  :/

No comments on the sculpting so far?  Good or bad?

she looks great so far! really like how her horns are twisted and I think you pulled of the cloven hooves greatly!  can't wait to see more.

Thank you so much!  The twisted horns were a happy accident - I was making the first one in the traditional sense and accidentally twisted the clay around the wire as I partially dropped the pony!  I thought it looked really neat, so I did them all like that and it works perfectly for the whole dark mood that I'm aiming for with him.

I finished all sculpting tonight and will post an updated pic in the morning. I'm so excited to paint him tomorrow!!

Sculpting is finished!  I decided against belly plates and altering his facial structure since kirin are supposed to basically be composites of horses and dragons so I thought he should retain some horseyness.    And holy cow, I need to find a faster/more efficient way to do those scales!  Rolling snakes of apoxie, then chopping off bits and rolling each bit individually into a ball to squish into a scale on the body takes FOREVER!!

Next up is FBR, then other paintwork, detail painting, then rehairing.  Can't wait for him to be done and give him to my hubby.  He knows I'm making something for him and he suspects that it's a pony, but he will NOT be expecting this!  Hoping to blow his mind!

Thank you so much!  His FBR is now done and it's on to the details!  I'm putting a push on to try to finish him today if at all possible.

Holy cow, I can believe those scales would take you a while!    Great job though, the sculpt looks awesome and I can't wait to see the finish paint job!
