G1 Ponies are scented?

Hello! I just started collecting ponies, and I noticed with my first G1 that came in the mail is that G1s have a smell! Kind of like a cotton candy type scent? My Sparkler, Milkyway, and my twin's Bowtie all have the same smell, but Bowtie's is the strongest. My twin says they smell different, but I disagree.

I can't find anything online about it. Were G1s scented, or am I imagining things?

Only scented sets are deliberately scented, like the Sweetberries, Sundae Bests and Perfume Puffs. The plastic is soft and porous so it will certainly pick up and absorb scents around it.

People have gotten ponies smelling like gasoline, cigarette/marijuana, must, mildew, animal feces, urine etc.

Perhaps the old owner liked making cotton candy? Or wearing cotton candy body spray?

Some were, yes. However, I've noticed a sort of plastic smell on mine. Like the old plastic toys at grandmas house. Best smell ever...

i always associated the smell of ponies with bath toys. they smell like wet plastic but, in a good way!

Older G1 collectors do talk of a "pony scent" and I have a couple of ponies who still have it.  It remind me vaguely of vanilla, but honestly I think it is the type of materials they used to make the vinyl.

I asked my mum to smell on of the ponies I finished cleaning after I said it still smells. She said it was a perfume smell.

All G1 ponies originally had a mild smell, it's quite unique and distinctive - softly sweet, a bit like vanilla.  The vast majority do not smell like this anymore though, so many years later.  It's a mystery if this was just a happy side-effect of the materials used in G1 plastic or something Hasbro did deliberately.

It is also possible for G1 that were not intentionally scented to absorb the scents of perfumed ponies if stored together. Chocolate Chip  (aka Coco Berry) is particularly lethal in this area...she is good at making other ponies smell sickly sweet.

I love the smell of G1's! Like a sweet, plastic smell (in a good way).

Takes me right back to being 6 years old!

I have a few G1 ponies that still smell new, some type of pony pheromone Hasrro cooked up. LOL.
There are lots of delicious smelling hair soaps/conditioners out there. You're lucky you got a batch of good smellers shimmershine.

It's really apparent when you walk into my pony "room," a small walk-in closet containing about 400 G1s. There is definitely a scent that unscented G1s seem to have. A vanilla/baby powder/plastic sort of smell.

There is also "pony smell" itself which is the vinyl - it does smell like baby powder perfume a little tiny bit.

Aside from a couple specific sets (like the Sundae Best ponies, the Sweetberry ponies, etc) G1 ponies aren't "purposely" scented.  But the plastic itself does have a pleasant smell that a lot of people describe as "the pony smell".

Back in the 80s, I would LOOOOOVE to sniff my new ponies when I opened the package. Sweet, sweet new plastic with a tiny hint of maybe vanilla? 

I can still get a hit of this scent from certain new plastics - and a wave of nostalgia flows over me.

The last thing that smelled similar was a blow-up ring float for the paddling pool...
