Title: Your pony "rules"
Post by: InkyMilk on September 16, 2012, 10:00:15 AM
I guess I'm just addicted to reading about and seeing other people's collections! So, do you have any sort of rules you apply to yourself when buying ponies, maybe in order to keep the number or "theme" to a minimum? Like, maybe only ponies from a certain generation or country? Or maybe only certain colors, or only earth ponies or whatever? Or do you just have at it and buy any pony you adore

Also, if you have any rules, how many times have you broken them? ;)

I tried some "rules" but they were too easy to break. Let's see:
-Only G4s
-only G3s
-only G1s
-only ponies with wings
-only purple ponies
-only boys (since G1 had them)
-only the gingerbread pose

Notice how the rules got more specific yet I managed to find a pony to break the rules. Like the Peru Applejack that I had to have. Then I thought she would be so lonely on the trip from overseas so she needed some companions.

I could go on and on....

Itry to  limit myself to space related ponies, yellow ponies, and Pinkie Pie.
I might have to rethink that last one soon though.  ^^;

Well with G2, G3 and G4 my rules are just to get the ones I like (as a pose to ALL off them!) so that keeps them under control a bit. As for G1s... I want one of every known pony so yeah, no rules there :P haha

Ummmm... pony rules are meant to be broken.

I meant not to collect blind bags, but I seem to have about ten of them.  Besides that, I "only collect blue G4 unicorns and babies".  :D

G3 I have given up on, as I really don't have the space.  There are a few select gifted ones that aren't leaving but that's all.

I would LOVE more G2s!  And G1s... well it depends on how I feel about the set at the time.  Which changes every few months!  :D

If it's a G1 or G2 I don't have, I want it :silly: If it's a G3 I don't have, and it looks awesome, I want it (less interested in ones that have designs that don't really appeal to me). I don't collect 3.5s at all, and any I get by chance get mailed off to live with a friend of mine ;) I don't really collect G4s, but if it's a custom I really like then I'll probably buy it :awake:

My "rules" include only G4s, only ponies that were in FIM, no FS size, no duplicates (unless they come in a set with another pony that I want), and no more BB ponies (I bought 2 just to say I had some and I also bought the rainbow pony pack for the Mane 6).

So far, I've stuck to my rules but I keep eyeing the FS size......
Title: Re: Your pony "rules"
Post by: popyduggan on September 16, 2012, 10:22:11 AM
I only open the blind bags, not the brushables.

I know if I open them I'll cut their hair to look like the show and half-customise them, which will make me want to buy another one so I still have the, "factory version".

I never thought like this as a kid btw, it's just a weird, insecure, "collector" mentality I've learned over the years.

So far, the G4 rules I've broken: Only collect FSs(broken), Only collect FSs and BBs(broken), Only collect brushables, BBs, and FSs(broken).

I also don't want to get into the trading cards, but I think I want to get into the trading cards.

My big rule now is no more G4. But if I (ever) see Sunny Rays in-store, I may break that rule. :P When I did buy G4, I only bought them if they were on sale, or clearance. I finally came to the realization that I don't really want them, and were only buying them because they were new pony stock in stores.

I also like to have one pony of every pose, in G1.

For G3, I just buy whichever I don't deem "ugly". G3 are great.

I only have one rule:

Buy ponies I like

:P

Rules. What are rules? Haha.

I guess techincally I said I only liked G4s.. then I got sucked into G1s and I guess it spiraled down from there...

I only have one rule:

Buy ponies I like

:P
Now this is my rule! I like ponies? I buy ponies. Right now though I seem to be focusing on Rainbows....

I was not going to collect bind bags either. But my wal mart got them and I bought them all. I will not buy them off ebay. So if my wal mart does not get them in then I will not be buying them. As of other ponies. I do not buy to many G1's right. I am buying alot of NIB G3'S and G4's. And alot of G4 prototypes.  :)

I only get mint/near-mint ponies. I mostly buy G1 and G4, but I'll buy a G3 if I really like it.

My rules are pretty simple -

G1 & G3: Only buy ponies I absolutely love.
G2 & G3.5: Do not buy.
G4: Only unicorns. I have a few non-unicorns from before I enacted this rule, and also one Fluttershy because Rarity is my favorite and she and Fluttershy are adorable together.
Bait: Only if I have something in mind.

Well I've actually put myself on a pony buying ban until UK Ponycon (I want to save money to spend there  ) but that's 3 weeks away so we'll see.

My rules at the moment before the ban were:
G1's - Only if it completes a set (That gets broken on a regular basis haha)
G2's - Don't buy
G3's - Only buy if I see them at a car boot or 2nd hand shop.
G4's - Must buy all brushables and FS

When I got into customizing, I thought "I'm not going to collect". HA! I hated the g4s.

 :|

Well, now I collect g4s, I am trying to get one of every character and I try to buy loose ones since I can't keep them in boxes. Blind bags are what sucked me in! Those beady little eyes will get you! I just put up 2 MORE shelves for my blind bags and now I want to customize blind bags as all of the g1's I like. I am determined not collect any prototypes or factory errors...

I wasn't going to collect g1's but soon after I started customizing, my inner child (who wanted but never got a big brother pony) HAD to have them. I don't have any of the expensive ones though. I try to buy ones to restore so other people who care about minty ponies can have the minty ones. So now that I've done the rehair swap I can hardly look at a g1 and think about possibilities. So I am now collecting baity g1's and restoring them with variant colors.

I'm really glad I don't need the minty/Nirvanas, because I don't think my budget could handle it. XD

Haha, I love reading everyone's responses, it's so interesting how everyone goes about it so differently!

For myself, aside from my childhood G1 ponies (only 2 of them), I was going to start collecting only the G4s that I absolutely loved. For Christmas my mom bought me the TRU BB set, and so even though I wasn't really intending to collect BBs, I sort of got hooked into completing the first wave set. Fortunately, I have never seen any of the other waves around here and I won't buy them online, so I think I'm done with those for now, and even then, they're still G4 so they count.

But then I saw G3 babies. Oh dear. I didn't want to collect G3s since they're so big compared to G4 and I really love a smaller, compact pony...and G3s are SO tiny and adorable! So now I'm allowed to collect G3s, but only the babies! Buuuut...I've sort of allowed that rule to reach out to G1 and G2 as well, I'm allowed to collect them, but only if they're babies so I can keep my tiny, cute collection ;) This actually works out pretty well, since one of my two childhood ponies IS a baby pony ( a ballerina baby), and I'm excited to find the other three babies to complete her set.

So far, keeping it to G4s and babies is working out pretty well. I also have a rule that I'm not allowed more ponies than I have "homes" for. I like to build little wood, model homes for them to live in, so I figure that's my allotted space, so I need to be very choosy about who and how many I adopt. I do have one shoebox filled with McD ponies and random odds and whatnot, but I don't consider them an "official" part of the collection, so as long as that shoebox stays just a single box, then all is well.

I have a few rules of my own... I usually try to stick to them, but it does happen that I bend them, depending on the circumstance. Here it goes:

- G1s - only the US and Euro releases, doesn't matter if complete or not. Variants and Nirvanas - only if it's a bargain. Not buying replacements to some of my toys at the moment, and not starting an army.
- G2s - buying only when it's a bargain, and there are no G1s to be seen.
- G3s - not buying until I'm not done with G1s and G2s
- G4s - same as G3s.
- G4 Blindbag - right now concentrating only on the Mane 6.

And that's pretty much it. Also, I usually tend to avoid buying merchandise, acessories and all the like, since I'm quite short on cash and want to save it for the ponies - the only time I made an exception to this rule was when I bought Bowtie plushie, but only because I love Bowtie and I've already missed out buying two plushies before her (Cotton Candy and Starshine), so I decided not to give up this time.

-Blindbags-Only ones i know and like
-Fakies are ponies too

At the moment, I have a wishlist, so I keep on the ones I want from the wishlist. Well, considering it's a biiiit too long xD I just try to get the ponies I am missing to complete the sets I have at the moment. Then I go on buying ponies I have always wanted since a child and complete those sets and so on.

I have a really broad wishlist of G1s and G3s, but I give priority to G1s and some G3s right after. Then all the others I would like to have too come after and any other toy line I like. So yes, those are my rules, more or less.
Title: Re: Your pony "rules"
Post by: BrightIdea on September 16, 2012, 11:41:49 AM
My current rules are:
I can buy whatever I find at the store (fashion styles, brushables, and blind bags).
I can buy any variants I see online, so I can take pictures and share them on my blog.
I can only buy 1 ebay item per month.
Must buy at least one of each character (G4s).

I really tried to limit myself to the main 6 G4s, but then I saw Lily Blossom at the store. I am happy I gave in and bought her.

Then when I had decided "only one of every character" I saw this beautiful Fashion Style Rarity with this adorable leopard print saddle. Hehe, now I am committed to buying every Fashion Style.

But there was no way I was buying those tiny blind bag ponies... until wave 3 showed up at locally and I bought a couple to see what the fuss was about. I opened up this adorable little Apple Dazzle and fell in love. Now I am sitting next to this great big pile of blind bag ponies.

Yep. I broke my rules.

My big rule is a maximum of 50 ponies. (All generations included)
When I started collecting it was every pony I could lay my greedy little paws on  :shifty: And then It was only G1's, and then yellow winged ponies, and then the ones I really wanted, and then I wanted to complete my childhood collection. And now...well now it's the ones I like, And I'm so SO picky about them too  ;)

I was'nt going to collect Blind bags, now I sorta do.. And in the beginning of G4 I bough every single pony, I've sold off all exept 7 and will only collect specific ones from here on, and I only got 2 G3's (both MOC) and 2 G2 (Both thrift store finds i like to much to sell.) So..there's my collecting pattern in shortness XP

My "rules":

-Only G4s, I seriously doubt I'll get into the other generations.
-No "posable" ponies
-no huge play sets
-Get ALL the basic brushables!
-Get ALL the blind bags!
-Get ALL the Fluttershys!
-Find a dang fashion style Rarity!

To begin with I just wanted my childhood G1s back. Then I bought lots of sad looking G1 lots off eBay. Then I started buying blind bags (but only ponies in the rearing pose. Mostly I have stuck to that, my only exception is the wonderbolts) and I wasn't interested in customs. Then I bought a custom. But I wasn't interested in accessories. And now I have some ponywear and shoes on the way. Then I wasn't interested in Nirvanas. Now I have two Argies and an Italian on the way. LOL.

The only rules I haven't broken are no G2s, G3s and G3.5s.
Title: Re: Your pony "rules"
Post by: MoonStars on September 16, 2012, 12:42:08 PM
first it was "Only moon and stars" themed G1 ponies, maybe a couple G3s (Midnight Dreams comes to mind). #fail as soon as I saw G2 Silver Swirl and the TAF  and Sparkle G1s.

New rule is "no duplicates". G1s and G2s and G3s so far so good on that, but G4s= so far, #fail... hard to stick to that rule when they come packaged with the non-duplicates... but OTOH add-on rule = "sell the duplicates", which so far is working somewhat.  (You know, except for the Pinkie Pie that has tinsel vs the P Pie that doesn't, vs the P Pie with a sparkly symbol... etc. *sigh*) Oh and new rule #2 = no more trading cards except any missing gold foils (ie if they come out with a whole new set I will pretend they don't exist. HAHA). And new rule #3: if the colors don't appeal to me and there isn't another reason I like the pony (Like, I hate pink, but P Pie is my favorite G4 character), it will not be bought. So far that hasn't worked out so well either. :-/

Pony collectors: keeping the global economy straggling along, one pony at a time.

ETA after seeing another post... yeah. The rule I regret breaking (but it's too late now..)? "No playsets".
Title: Re: Your pony "rules"
Post by: NoPonySpecial on September 16, 2012, 01:19:08 PM
Broken immediately: for G1s, only ones I had as a kid. Ha, hat was I thinking?

G1: No matching babies and adults. Like, if I have adult Cotton Candy, I can't have a baby one, and vice-versa.
For some reason, I also limit myself to "normal" earth, unicorn, and pegasus ponies. The problem is I love the molds on gimmicky ponies. My grails right now are Lady Flutter and Glow without wings, and I just bought a Bunny Hop specifically because her pocket was broken off.
G2: No rules really, there aren't many G2s I want anyway.
G3: Not actively seeking, but if I acquire some in lots, I only keep ones that
            a) I really like AND
            b) have a pose that no other pony in the collection has (exceptions made for the small number of G3s on my want list.)
G4: No brushable sized ponies. I don't mind if I happen to acquire one somehow, like in a lot or something, but no seeking them out. I don't care for them, even if I love the characters. Basically, Blind Bag and McDonalds ponies only, with few exceptions. I think I have to break the rule for the CMCs and the Crystal Princesses set.)
  Across all Gens:
Try to have a baby from each generation.
Buy/look for broken/damaged ponies. For the reason mentioned above, and because I don't mind ponies with cancer and regrind, but other hate it, and those ponies need love too. (Only issue I can't stand in head/body mismatch. (shrug))
Not a rule exactly, but I try not to have too many repeats of a single mold, but this is pretty lax.
I love fakies, but I have my own bizarre criteria for which ones are too close to official MLPs to buy, and which are too real looking. I don't think I could even explain it.

Hmmm... apart from space and budgetary constraints ($xx.xx per week, not to be exceeded, including shipping for swaps), I don't really have much in the way of rules.  I happily obtain duplicates (though only with an eye for trading/selling, since I'm not an army gal - yet ) and though I'm focussing on G1s and select (ie: ones I really like the look of) G3s, I have a small herd of G4s, blindbags, McPonies, and even two G2s (who whisper in my ear at night that they're really, really lonely being only two and that they'd like more G2 company :P).  I guess it boils down to:

* no G3.5s (I tried to  'em, I really did...)
* no keeping accessories (yeah, they'll all wind up on the block sooner or later)
* no MIBs/MOCs (take up too much room and I could never resist not actually holding them)
* no playsets beyond the Pretty Parlour (again, 'cause they take up too much space)

But if ever I suddenly find myself with a bona-fide ponyroom... all bets are off!

My main pony rule is just to not go too crazy at one time.  I do try to collect all the ponies of certain sets, but not all sets.  The sets I really like are the more traditional G1 sets, like the original main 6, the unicorns/pegasi, the sets of rainbow haired ponies, some of the g3.5's and many of the g4s.  I like most of the G3s and will buy ones I like if I can get them for decent prices.  Mostly, I just collect the ponies that I really like.  If I can manage to get all the ponies in a set that I really like, then that's great, but I don't (usually) allow myself to pay a lot for one pony because she is super popular or rare, even if it completes a set.

I have a few rules:

-> No G3.5.
-> no fashion style, poseables, dollymix, or keychains... NONE! okay, maybe one keychain for personal use...
-> No MIB, except the blind bags... which must be MIP! This is purely to stop me collecting them all, only the ones in packaging I can admire them in! ( I did trade for a couple though... argh!)
-> No more playsets until I have more space!
-> Only buy from my wantlist unless it's a great deal on a lot.
-> Don't buy only one pony online (costs too much in shipping)
-> Only buy g1 & g2 online unless in a lot with g1/g2.
-> G3 & G4's only buy in person (at stores/thrift/markets)
-> only buy accessories for ponies I already have, or are on my wishlist and come with their accessories!
-> get rid of all duplicates... including remodels (after g2) except those two pinkie pies I have.... and any G3.5 I end up with.

ok, I have a lot of rules... and some I made up... just now!

My pony rules...some of which get broken a bit:
a) Nothing from 3.5.
b) Keep to a theme before branching out. (For G1, the theme was "Collect the ponies from Rescue at Midnight Castle," and since I've managed that (got Bubbles and Seashell in one shot!,) I'll probably either move on to Escape from Catrina or the ponies that were the basis for the main cast of Friendship Is Magic...fortunately, there's some overlap, but if anyone knew if any G1 pony inspired Luna, I'd appreciate it. (Heck, if anyone could make me certain as to what the basis for Celestia was, I'd appreciate it. For me....it seems obvious she's inspired by Majesty. My Little Wiki, for some reason, thinks it's Sundance. For G4, it's been "collect the blind bags of the canon cast.")
Now I'll admit, that second one gets broken a bit. I had to have the blind bag Minty because Minty is just a cute and sweet pony, Wind Whistler and Gusty were just too awesome not to get, and I broke down and bought the brushables of the Manes.

My Rules were

~as a kid 'BUY ALL THE PONIES I DON'T HAVE!!!!'

~G2 rolls around '...Buy the old ones I don't have at garage sales?'

~G3 rolls around '...BUY JUST G1 AND G3 THAT I DON'T HAVE!!  maybe just the prettiest G3s..'

~G3.5 '.........Hello G2, I never realized how pretty you are....OMG PONYS IN THRIFT STORES!!!!  BUY EVERY GEN BUT G3.5 INCLUDING ONES I ALREADY HAVE!!!  YAY DOUBLES FOR PONYS TO WEAR PONY WEAR!!!!'

~G4 'Ok, just the brushables of this gen plus every gen but G3.5'
~Later G4 'Ok...Brushables and Fashion Styles plus older gens except G3.5'
~Even Later G4 'ok...brushables, fashion styles and those new Blind Bags plus older gens except G3.5, that's it! No More!!'
~Now '.....Oooh Trading Cards!!!   And brushables, fashion styles and those new Blind Bags plus older gens except G3.5'

It started with all Rainbow Dash all the time... and I was picky:
I only wanted Dasher's that had:
Pose Changes
Cutie Mark Differences

That evolved into accepting Hair Differences (I have G4s with bangs, without bangs & with tinsel)

I still have not evolved to ALL RAINBOW DASHES EVER. For example - I have no interest in getting G4 Glimmer Wings RD, [rant] because I saw that episode and only Rarity had wings like that so it's just silly for everyone else to have them [/rant]. G3 Easter Dash is the same. No differences in cutie mark or pose so I do not need her.

As I have now collected all of the ones that fit my "rules," I evolved to White Ponies. Which has now switched to White & Silver G1 & G2 (ie Princess Tiffany & Silver Swirl...) and White Body G3s.

And once I get all of those who knows what is next!

That's such a great question - I've been thinking about that lately, actually!  I have kept my childhood collection of G1s but sold off my G2s and other G1s I had acquired over the years as an adult.

I limit myself to actively collecting holiday-related G3s - especially the winter ponies, which I absolutely adore. :)  I also occasionally buy other G3s that I find to be especially cute.

My rules can be very complicated:

G1 :
- Tales 7 only, and in order of my queue. Meaning no Bon-Bon, no new Tales 7 pony (which has to be a Clover, then Bright-Eyes, then Patch, then finally Starlight and Melody).
- Low priority, constrained by money left after high priority purchases.

G2 :
- Sky Skimmer only.
- Low priority, constrained by money left after high priority purchases.

G3 / 3.5 :
- Core 7, and maybe Fluttershy brushables and plushes only. However, the occasional electronic toy will be considered, provided that it's sophisticated enough to pique my interest.
- Low priority, constrained by money left after high priority purchases.

G4 :
- Tangiable toys (ie plushes and brushables) only. No stationary, trading cards, or other easily perishable stuff. However, this excludes apps and books, which will be subjected to discrimination based on the presence of villains in the media.
- Only toys by Hasbro, Funrise and KidDesigns are given priority. Other licensees subject to additional discrimination, and priority by budget.
- No villains. If set comes with villains, see if you can get a better deal excluding the villains before buying.
- No convention exclusives, unless they become available in regular stores.

I've recently updated my rules:
However I break these rules very frequently lol  ^.^
I'm always seeing things I didn't know I wanted but most often I let them pass by for another collector who obviously wants it more and force myself to remove them from my want list.

When I buy some I always then sell some others, this is why my collection is small but manageable :)

oh pony rules
First it was none over $10, then $20, then $50 is ok... now I barely think about parting with $150
Second rule... only G1s... I say that with 100 g3 now in my cabinet

The only rule I stick to is they must be nm although I don't mind rehairs
Also no eye rubs... thats a big pet peeve

Mine was always that I only collect G1. Now I have the full set of wave 3 blind bags... Go figure!
My aim is to have every G1 (I mean character, not from each country, variant etc) and to collect as many variants of Confetti as possible. The only thing I can't tolerate are hair cuts and masses of ink.

All of my ponies must be near mint, and I only collect G1 and G4 :)   A few G3s have made their way into the herd, but I don't plan on getting any more.

Alas I am not in the land of no rules

It started thus
1) Only "childhood ponies"....nope broken
2) Only a couple of shelves of ponies...nope broken
3) Only a bookcase, ok maybe a couple of bookcases, of ponies...nope broken
4) Only one pony from each set...nope broken

Now...we just go with all the ponies :) [and the accessories, backcards, leaflets and paperwork]....thank goodness I try my best to not stray too far from G1

- Stay within the pony budget  :lmao:

- All ponies must fit unto one bookshelf later amended to two, currently at three with expansion unto fourth imminent... now they all must stay in their designated corner in the doll room.

- I only collect some G4s... okay all G4s, I suppose a few G3s wouldn't hurt and like G1s that I used to have as a kid (and maybe a few I wanted as a kid).. where did those G3.5s and that one G2 come from?

- No blindbags... now I easily have 100 of them ^^;

- Absolute max budget of $75 per a pony, it's supposed to be less than $50 but I had to go over that for the SDCC 2007 pony and a MLP friend or two. Custom plushes don't count...

- Buy locally available G4s in stores only unless I have a deal on a preorder, no resorting to eBay etc unless it is an international exclusive.

- Any and all duplicates are to be given as offerings to the zilla (my daughter), the door to the doll room is to be locked at all times to prevent said zilla from helping herself to mommy's ponies. Even though she has far more MLP than I, she is not above expanding her collection through via the theft of my ponies granted she is only four.

- No trading cards, Nirvanas, custom FiM plushes, any type of gigantic merchandise that I don't have space for and I'm only allowed one shelf total of customs mlp

ONLY G1s....any country......best condition possible.......price must be right (?)
I did detour into G3s for my granddaughters.......but stopped that about as quickly as they did!
G1s then - that's it!
