Off Topic / Eurovision Song Contest 2024
« on: May 10, 2024, 10:48:55 AM »
It's that time of the year again! Who's watching with me?

I know there are big political questions in play so let's just leave it at that - I respect anyone's decision to boycott the contest this year. Let's keep the discussion civilized and focus on the musical performances, please.

Who are your favourites this year? Any guesses as for the winner? If your country is competing, what do you think about the artist? Did you watch the semifinals or just the grand final? The floor is yours. :)

Hi everyone, happy new year!

On behalf of our team of art Mods, I'm running a poll to see what kind of artistic activities our members would like to see in 2024.

You can pick as many options as you like. I entered some options that are more or less regular, like ATC swaps and colouring contests, but please feel free to suggest something out of the box! Also feel free to let us know if there's any past activities you particularly enjoyed and would like to see again.  ^.^

Thanks for your feedback!

Arts & Crafts Corral / Your art summary 2023
« on: December 03, 2023, 02:16:20 AM »
As the year is coming to an end I thought it would be fun to do a recap thread like this again. :) (You can view the 2021 thread here, I don't think we had one in 2022...)

What did your year look like in terms of arts and/or crafts? Discuss freely or use any of the prompts listed below if you like, I've copied the list from the old thread and updated for this year.

2023 Summary

  • Did you try anything new, like new tools or techniques, new styles or subject matters, or completely new artsy or craftsy hobbies? Maybe you participated in a swap for the very first time, or took on your very first commission?
  • Pony art? Non-pony art?
  • What was your favourite medium to work with?
  • What were your areas of improvement?
  • Tell us about your worst art-related mishap or biggest disappointment!
  • Which 2023 piece are you most proud of?
  • Show us your 2023 Summary of Art if you've made one! Templates can be found online (dA and elsewhere) - a link is fine if the summary itself can't be posted off-site.

Goals for 2024!
  • Have you made any art-related New Year resolutions or set any goals for 2024?
  • What would you like to try or experiment with?
  • Are you planning to buy some new art supplies? Show us your wishlist!
  • Are you looking to do any art swaps (private/group swaps, on the Arena or off-site)? What kind of swaps would you like? (Actually I'm thinking of starting a separate thread for brainstorming so keep your eyes peeled!)
  • If you were only able to complete one art piece in 2024, what would it be?

The bait arrived to me in a rather sorry state, someone had already cut three big holes into the poor pony. I've had it in my bait box for quite a while and always considered doing a zombie pony one day. I didn't want to go that route for this swap, however. Instead, I was inspired by nature in the autumn: there's decay but it can be beautiful, and new life will spring from the decomposed material. BC described the pony as spooky and elegant and that's precisely what I was going for. She's still very much appropriate for November, as the Finnish name of the month is marraskuu, 'marras' being an archaic word for death.

I used wire covered in washi tape to make the curly plants. All sculpting was done with Apoxie Sculpt. The hair is a combo of natural wool (mane) and cheap synthetic hair from a wig or hair extension - I have good quality black nylon in my stash but it was too glossy and neat for the vibe I needed! :D Painted in acrylics - I went wild and after the base paint I just splashed some diluted yellowish paint on her, and added some texture using stiff bristles. In my original design sketch her right eye was normal, but in the end I though she needed a milky horror eye. My sketch was not very detailed anyway, instead I wanted to go with the flow and let the pony tell me which direction I needed to take.

Arts & Crafts Corral / Arena Artist Spotlight ~ November ~ Celebrating YOU!
« on: November 02, 2023, 01:26:36 PM »
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the MLP Arena and our wonderful community of pony fans, we’re introducing a monthly artist spotlight! The idea is to showcase the variety of artistic talent and craftsmanship our members bring to this board for our enjoyment, and to get to know the artists behind their work. We hope you enjoy these features!

For this month, I decided to try something different - I want to feature YOU! :cheer:

(This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I failed to ask someone early enough :lookround: )

That's right, please post your artwork in this thread. Anything goes, old, new, pony, non-pony. Of course, I would love to see pieces that you are particularly proud of, and maybe say a few words about them. Feel free to also tell something about your artistic journey. If you like, you can fill in the interview questionnaire, or pick your own selection of questions to answer:

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do? {Pony / non-pony? Materials, media, crafts?}
When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?
Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?
In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?
What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)? {For example, are you planning to try a new medium or craft, participate in a swap/trade, improve a particular skill, make art more regularly, start taking commissions, etc.}
What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

Thank you for showcasing your work!

For UK Ponycon

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?
I started craftig with everything i got my hands on as a child, so while learning a few illustration things in digital i ended up becoming a product designer and mainly traditional artist. While i started out with watercolor I found guache being my most favorite paint in the recent years. It can be opaque, mixes well, the pigments can be amazing and you can thin it so be like watercolor and it dries in a very nice structure.

when I do not illustrate or push pixels and vercors on the PC, I sew, as in making cosplay, historic inspired cute clothes or Plush.

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?
My grandparents are artists and worked in schools, made sculptures in local cities and made a few pieces for local churches. So, family was usually interested in supporting if smol pommes wanted to craft or draw! With becoming a teenager the interest in cute things did rise aswell as in video games and manga. From that, I stumbled over some legendary customs of videogame characters and a friend pulled me into making customs on my own. That was around 2006? I signed up to the MLP arena about 2 years later!

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?
A lot has changed since 2006! :D Back then, I only did digital art, which is rare nowadays. I am very thankfull I can work with so many new techniques and material now. My style changed too, but I think the most influence on my style are three pony artist from northern europe to which I still look up to!

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?
oh, YES! Most improvement was it when I started drawing the pony toys itself like still life, that helped so much with thier shape. Also drawing ponies and horses from references and study artists like Mucha, Loish and some artists on Pixiv.  Another huge improvement step was when I was painting (and mostly uploading) a character each day for about 9 Months. Just finish that work, upload it. even if you are not happy with that one eye there or that paintwork, paint more and you will get in the flow and your work will get lighter and have more expression!

there is SO much room for more improvement, I don´t know where to start listing things! Currently a few things change and while I still draw I have not set a focus yet in which direction i`ll be going. ;)

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?
Aha, that is difficult. I do want to see my friends more, improve my sewing, make little things that make people smile and I might get more involved with learning theatre and dance as a tiny hobby. Still supporting local events with planning and grafic design and giving some workshops for kids at the local library.

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?
SHARE YOUR WORK!
Use references, study people you admire, test that color combo!! what? mint for shadows on a pink pony? try that!!
Don´t just doodle but also make finished pieces, upload them even if you dislike them for today, others might love it!
You do not have to push out a masterpiece, never. Focus more on making many pots, since you will improve in practice more than in correction!

And most importantly: Draw what you love.
that flower, your sibling, that bird, these hands, your fav. coffee mug, that amazing sky ,.. and so on.

Customs / Unicorn Grove

I made this pony for the custom contest at Poniconi, a pony convention held in Espoo, Finland last weekend. :) She didn't place but that's okay, the contest was great and there were some stunning creations! The theme was 'Magical Forest' - my thoughts instantly went to unicorns. Some of you may remember my unicorn ponies from years ago - I think I made three altogether - and those were always some of my favourite. So I figured I should revisit the theme!

Btw this is the pony I was asking about earlier, the one with pores. She seems to be okay so far and the wholes aren't too noticeable anymore. The bait used to be a Powder, I think - arrived to me without symbols or hair, terribly yellowed and full of ingrained dirt. Worst of all, her horn was completely missing. I gave her a new horn using Apoxie Sculpt, painted her in acrylics and rehaired in a few different shades of pink, purple and blue nylon.

Customs / Porous ponies?
« on: September 17, 2023, 06:31:47 AM »
I'm making a custom for a contest and ran into an unexpected problem. Just wanted to see if anyone else has seen anything like this before.

I'm using a G1 bait that was really discoloured and also suffered from a terrible case of ingrained dirt. I soaked her in boiling water with laundry detergent and that seemed to help a lot. However, I didn't bother to try and get all the ingrained dirt out - I figured it wouldn't matter since I was going to give her a full body repaint anyway. Well, I painted a few layers, let her sit overnight and today I noticed that the paint has tiny little holes in it.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas what might cause it? At the moment I'm just wondering if it's simply that the plastic is porous and the paint won't get into the tiny, tiny holes so they show up. (The lighting conditions were not ideal yesterday. when I started painting her so I may have just missed it.) But I'm also a bit worried it might be something like plasticiser leak. I just hope it won't ruin my paintwork over time!

I'm short-pressed for time so I can't really switch baits right now. So I guess I'll just finish her for the contest and hope for the best, I'm probably going to keep her anyway, at least until I know she's not going to deteriorate over time. Which is kind of sad because I rarely make customs for sale anymore and a convention would be an ideal place to sell. Oh well.

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

I mainly draw digital art these days. I love drawing dragons, Lion King fan art and general animal art. I also do love drawing ponies, just haven't as much lately ^^;

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I've been drawing since I was 2 or 3 so definitely got interested early on. I remember drawing pony art on occasion over the years but my interest in drawing ponies really took off when G4 and Friendship is Magic came around.

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

My style is definitely pretty Disney influenced. I admit it and am fine with it. My favorite traditional media is still colored pencils but lately I've pretty much exclusively been drawing digitally. I'm still using a mouse for my lineart but I do use my Ugee tablet for sketching, shading and backgrounds. I also use a ballpoint pen for my doodle sketchbook sketches still.

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

Definitely the quality of my lineart, anatomy, shading style and backgrounds. Art is a continuing learning process. I've been at it for over 30 years and there are still things to learn. My biggest weaknesses are still things like vehicles, anything mechanical and armor.

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?

There is a project I'm keeping under wraps right now that I'd like to finish and taking on more commissions would definitely be nice. Those are definitely open.

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

Keep at it. Lots of practice is key to improving your art. If you're looking to hone your skills in pony art in particular, eyeball screen grabs or your own ponies. Oftentimes I have focused on a particular way a part of the character was drawn while watching something and applied it to my own work. As far sharing your art, you do need to be careful these days with AI image scraping on the move so always always always sign and watermark anything you post to the internet and it'd be best to post to sites that have policies against AI generated images so review the TOS and privacy policies of a website before deciding to post to it.

Customs / Pink Chocolate ~ Birthday Custom Swap for kaelynn!

I tried to incorporate some of kaelynn's likes, such as chocolate and the colours pink and blue/turquoise. The NDS also has a small nod towards her love for cats. :) The concept didn't come together until I realised I personally love the combo of pink and brown, and decided to google some inspiration pics of elaborate cakes and cupcakes.

All sculpting was done with Apoxie Sculpt; the cake has a paper armature to keep it lightweight and the plate is made of some recycled plastic. Sadly I heard she didn't quite make it to her new home intact, the cake and some of the other sculpted parts came off. :( I think I need to invest in a new batch of Apoxie as mine is super old and maybe doesn't adhere as well anymore as it used to. Fully repainted in acrylics and rehaired with nylon hair (can't remember the exact colours used, I think it was Pussycat, Espresso, Butterscotch and some Sunlight for a bit of sparkle). I also gave her some accessories: a small gift box and a banner that says Happy Birthday so that she's ready to throw a birthday party anytime!

Customs / Forest Keeper
« on: August 17, 2023, 01:35:59 PM »
I'm so happy to finally introduce this pony I've been working on for several years! On and off, some parts of the process were really tedious, and the rest was just me procrastinating as always. :P  If you've followed my WIP stories you've already seen some teasers.

To recap, back when I was still actively working on customs (about ten years ago, lol) I once gave my friend a "gift card" for a custom. She misplaced it but found it again and returned to claim the gift. This was in 2021, I think, so it really took me a while to complete the custom even after we'd discussed the concept... She asked for something forest/druid themed and this is what I came up with.  ^.^

More pics on my deviantART: >click here!<

The bait was an awfully spotty Gingerbread that had already been customised once by someone. I stripped the old paint, took out the jewel eyes and sculpted over them, painted the pony and gave them a pair of branch-like antlers (Apoxie Sculpt). Rehaired in nylon with some wool roving added in. The antlers also have small tufts of wool to mimic beard lichen. The pony features a number of Finnish forest animals: brown bear, roe deer, raven and the great grey owl.

I haven't had the chance to give the pony to my friend yet, but I'm going to meet her soon ^.^ And she's seen WIP pics along the way.

Thanks for looking!

A watercolor picture I made in a sort of art nouveau style.

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

As long I can use a lot of colors in my art; I’ll try  any medium!
I believe this might also be one of the reasons why I enjoy ponies so much; I just love pretty colors! :rainbow:

Watercolors holds a very special place in my heart though and at the moment it’s my preferred medium but I still very much love the straightforward ways of computer art.
Besides ponies I do enjoy painting animals and wildlife and even crocheting.

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I’ve been drawing for all my life so I can’t really say how I started.  My grandfather worked as an engineering artist and illustrator and I always admired him and his work and I often sat on the floor beneath his work bench with my own set of pens and papers and doodled all day long. My mom back then also did airbrush art on cars so I guess you could say it’s in the blood.

As a kid I absolutely adored the G1 MLP backcards and along with my beloved MLP toys I always saved the backcards and pamphlets just so I could look at the art.
(I even won a MLP drawing contest from the old “My Little Pony Club”. I have no idea what that image looked like though, but it probably wasn’t very pretty 😃)

When I then rediscovered my old collection as a teenager it hit me again how pretty the old G1 backcard art really is and how much I cared for my old toys and since I already loved to draw it was a simple thing to combine two hobbies into one passion.

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

Absolutely! I feel like I’m still exploring my style once in a while. Actually, some days it feels like I don’t have a style at all! I just draw what pleases me in whatever style I feel like doing 😋

These days I am also trying to paint and draw more realism which is something I hardly ever done before but I must say I’m very much enjoying it!

Preferred media can change on daily basis. It all depends on what I want to paint and how I want the result to look. Usually it’s pending between watercolours, coloured pencils, markers and digital art

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

I think there´s always room for improvement. For me art is always a learning process. I am my own worst critic and it’s actually a terrible habit since I see flaws in every piece I do. 😅 I’m just learning not to let that bother me and just enjoy the process of creating.

However, I believe I have gotten better technically over the years and if I look back at my old art I can see that I work way more with depth, lights and contrasts in my art now. That, and just being better at sketching out the overall shapes in the beginning stages of a drawing.

Since I’ve been practicing realism this latest year I feel I have grown a bit as an artist as well. Realism isn’t perfection so practicing it has been good for me! 😃

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?

I have many plans and ideas for the future but most of them will probably take more than a year to achieve. 😅 At the moment I’m truly satisfied whenever I just the have time to sit down and draw something since I am usually so busy with other things besides art.

As I mentioned before I love having my watercolors close by and I have just started to explore gouache so I’m excited to learn more about that medium.

My long term goals is to do animation and game coding. Mostly animation at least. There´s something satisfying in seeing your art come to life but it does take a lot of time and effort!

I have also entered the world of digital 3D sculpting which is also very fun and very different from what I usually do. I can see myself doing a lot of fun 3D projects so I’m excited to learn more!

As a last goal I am hoping to find an online platform where I’m comfortable posting my art on.  :art:

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

Have fun and explore!
The more you practice art, the better you will get at it 😊 Might sound boring but it´s true.
Setting short term goals or even daily challenges might be a fun way to get going. There´s plenty of community art challenges where you can participate to get practice and have fun (like inktober, doodlewash, brushwarriors and many more)!

And I’ll say it again; Have fun!

'Bubbles Of Love' - a piece I made for the art collaboration I did with AnnaPommes in 2021

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

I do both digital and traditional art, in a bunch of different media and styles. I love watercolour the most, but I always end up mixing media, adding in things like coloured pencils, gouache and acrylics as I paint.

The two main categories of art I make is pony (of course :silly: ), and anime (a lot of genshin fanart), but I also do all kinds of other arts and crafts. I knit a lot, and design patterns (and host a small knitting podcast on youtube!), and I really enjoy spinning yarn, both on the wheel and using spindles.

I also like bullet journaling, especially when it comes to decorating. Kind of like scrapbooking.

Lately, I've been wanting to try out beading and UV resin. I love sewing and embroidery, but sadly it hurts my body, so I don't do it as often as I'd like.

I could go on for ages, I am constantly trying out new craftsy hobbies! :silly:

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I've been drawing since I could hold a pen, pretty much! And it's just kind of stuck with me :) MLP art came naturally when I fell down the rabbit hole and started collecting way back in 2006. I usually end up drawing a lot based around my interests, so it just kind of happened very early on in my collecting journey. It was very g3 box art inspired back then, I don't really know how long it took for me to develop my own pony style.

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

Oh, for sure! My style has evolved a lot over the years, as well as technique. Preferred media has definitely changed, too. I used to love making linearts with fine liners - I don't do it too much anymore. First of all, I've discovered I much more love coloured linearts, but I also have a reason that's a bit more sad, and that is the fact that it really hurts my hands. The way I make coloured linearts is slightly easier on my hands, and changing pens for different sections give opportunities to remember to stop and stretch!
I've used watercolour for a really long time, too, but I only started loving it a lot in the past few years, when I feel like my skills in it evolved a little.

I used to be big on digital art way back in time, but when my old tablet started falling apart, I lost the interest in it. It was just one big frustrating ordeal, so I pretty much quite for a couple of years, and started using ProMarkers a lot. I've since fallen back in love with digital art, and mostly quit markers. There are so many more options for tablets on the market now, and I finally found something to suit me, and it's been so much fun making art with it!

So basically, I go between watercolour and digital art these days :lovey:

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

In general, technique improves with practice and studying. I love learning and trying new things when it comes to art, and I find that to be very helpful for improvement. Even trying something completely different will help, because it might give you new inspiration, or a new angle or perspective on your main craft!

I definitely have areas that could do with improvement. Perspective and foreshortening is hard, anatomy is something you always need to (I feel like, at least) keep up with practicing.

The biggest thing I need to improve however - drawing and sketching more! I don't draw nearly as much as I would like to.

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)

To go with that last line of my last answer, short and simple: make more art!

I'm getting splints for my hand joints, so I will hopefully be able to actually draw more often with less pain, but I think I will need to retrain my drawing muscles for that, so I am setting a goal for a lot of just basic sketching, and having fun with it again.

I would also like to start selling my art - I have a lot of 'stock' printed and ready, but I haven't started actually selling.

Another goal would be to start posting the art I make again. It's healthy to create without needing to post it, but as an artist who does commissions and merch, it's kind of necessary! I'm awful with keeping up with posting online :silly:

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

My biggest tip: Have fun with what you make!
Don't get caught up in comparing to other online artists. I fall into this trap, too. Your sketchbook doesn't have to be aesthetic or instagrammable, you don't have to try the current *it* media or follow style trends - find what makes YOU happy in your creativity and explore!

When it comes to posting online - just go for it! Now is as good of a time as ever. I really love tiktok for posting (and finding!) art. If you're on instagram, reels are your friend if you want people to find your art.
(and again, don't compare yourself to other artists!)

The hair and the pose kept me up
way longer than it should have

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

Pony and non-pony traditional/ digital art and customizing.

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

Ooh, that was back in maybe 2004/2005? After watching the Lion King I got in a mood that said: I want to draw like that. MLP bug bit in 2006 soon after.

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

My main style has more or less stayed the same, but I did develop a G2 style too 😊Digital has always been my usual medium. But I try to do more and more traditional media though! With traditional I like to switch between pencils, alcohol markers and some watercolour.

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

Anatomy, it’s gotten less wonky. And I got my preferred way of doing lineart for ponies right now. I still want to improve on doing backgrounds and want to work on more dynamic poses.

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?

Make a new set of prints, maybe in a more painterly style. Maybe-maybe G1s

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

Go for it! Even on days that you think you’ll never improve, trust me you will. What worked really well for me is to draw with ballpoint pen only. That was my go-to on a daily basis for a loooong time.
