Pony Corral / Re: Any Basic Fun retro G1 news for 2023?
« on: May 08, 2023, 04:20:39 PM »
When the toy fair pictures were first revealed it was Panda's interpretation that came to my mind, the fact her actual customs and photos were then used as stock images over multiple online stores made it all the more obvious. Technicalities aside, I don't think it's ok to use her photographs in any capacity without her permission and I'm glad she's done something about it 👏

Meanwhile the limited molds argument sounds like a stretch to me when they had no trouble reproducing the Bubbles pose, Moondancer pose, or Fizzy pose which are unlikely to be used again in the future.

Mine came from a US seller and the wide version was sold shrink wrapped on a stiff card board.

Taffeta you're right about 1987/1988.

I have the poster somewhere and it can be found on this page as well:

It's an official vintage poster. Here's a wide version:

Here's the Starshine I got on Saturday. :)

Ponyfan

Congrats Ponyfan on finding her :)

I wish I kept mine MIB now that I see how pretty yours is, but I'll probably use this as an excuse to buy a second one later.

Pony Corral / Re: 35th Anniversary Collectors Pony's - Part 2!

Another thing I am going to add here is that no matter how perfect one side looks the other is unknown. When I deboxed Sunlight, there was a black spot on her foot (non display side) that I was able to get most of it off with just water but there is a small black smudge still left (looked like ink or paint drop). I had to take a moment and remind myself it was a $10 "toy" and move on with it since I really did not want to scrub a brand new pony with a magic eraser and it wasn't going to be seen on the shelf anyways. Yes, I know, we are collecting them and we want them to be perfect (so do I trust me) but the G1's were not perfect either. Factory flaws are an unfortunate reality, unless we want them to have a "collectors item" price tag.
As important as it is to have a good quality product, I worry a bit about the perfection search as well - and mostly the returning of ponies because of minute manufacturing issues which are a part of most toys in most lines. Too many returns are a threat to the line overall, and really, it's as toyjunky says. These are cheap toys. I don't think it's wrong to scrutinise every pony in every box if it is important to you - but returning items to a shop raises a red flag against the line in general. And given how many flaws from package G1 had and even still have on MOC items...it just seems a bit crazy to me to care about tiny imperfections.

Excellent points, couldn't have said it better.

I completely agree with your points on Cherries Jubilee, she wasn't my favorite initially but somehow that changed throughout the years and I consider her an essential now. I also share the same views on the 2nd Rainbow set, those are needed considering how tricky it is to find them in good condition.

Seeing how the So Softs don't seem to be planned for 2019 yet (based on their response to Kiwichi's question) that leads me to believe the "collector ponies" could be the 1985 earth ponies as it would introduce 6 new characters and chronologically they are accurately tied up with the 2nd Rainbows and 2nd Unicorns and Pegasus which share the same poses.

Pony Corral / Re: Batch Difference Research - Help Needed!

I didn't know there were so many different ones. Is there any sure way to tell them apart? So if you have a random one you can see which type it is?

When you all are talking about a "deeper" pink, what do you mean? Is it brighter pink? Or less purple-y pink?

The lilac/purple pink body as NightGliderSA mentioned and the crisp quality of the symbols is another way to tell, earlier batches tend to have the paint bleed into the plastic specifically the orange paint under the glitter creating a halo effect around the shapes which does not happen with later releases. Brown eyeliner also indicates a later batch and the set can be separated into the following:

- 1985 original US retail release (most common, several batches, bleeding symbols, prone to problems)
- 1986/1987/1988 US retail release (no issues, different hair plugs and better quality, no bleeding symbols)
- 1987 mail order (may have issues as symbols do bleed but never seen any in terrible condition)
- 1986/1987/1988 European release (made in HK, similar to later US, whitest Confettis belong to this batch)
- 1988 and later mail orders (identical to 1986/1987 batches)
- 1991 mail orders (left over from last production runs)
