Pony Corral / "Fable" ponies - do we have a definitive list?
« on: April 14, 2024, 04:33:42 AM »
This is really a question for people in Europe, predominately Scandinavia I imagine.

So I'm wondering about the Fable Ponies - or otherwise known as the set released in Europe with the early unicorn and pegasus ponies in. I'm not certain of who this set comprised in total, and I'd like to get that information right. I believe some have been found on cards that do not depict them.

I believe the following ponies were included in the set:

Yellow Moondancer (was white sold as well?)
Green eyed/glitter symbol Gusty
Powder
Firefly
Surprise (?)

After that I am not quite certain.

Can anyone help??

Pony Corral / So Cherries Jubilee and the Wiki.
« on: March 28, 2024, 01:49:45 PM »
Is there anyone around at the moment with the ability to edit the Wiki?
Noticed this this morning.

http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Cherries_Jubilee#European_Cherries_Jubilee

(Note = this post is about versions made in HK, predominately. Italy and Spain etc are a whole other rabbithole, LOL)

There's still some confusion about how CJ was sold in the UK and Europe, and the above Wiki description for the European CJ is...not right. So just to clear things up a bit, here's my random geek ted talk on Cherries Jubilee, because she's awesome, and we should talk about her more.

And also I hope someone will fix the above linked information :P

So, Cherries Jubilee in Europe and the UK...

#1
"Groom and Style" Cherries Jubilee.
This pony is the same as the US release from year three.
The Groom and Style moniker comes from Hasbro's own files, probably because the set introduced curly hair over here :)
This Cherries Jubilee was sold in 1985, and packaged like this:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

This set had Bow Tie and Applejack in the collector pose. Bow Tie had curls.
In some places in Europe this set was sold with the ponies made in other places eg Italy, but on the same card. This set was also sold like this in some places in Europe, and also on US style card in places in Europe.

#2
1986 Cherries Jubilee (Second Edition, or UK Cherries Jubilee)
This pony has straight hair, normally straight like Posey or Tootsie.
She has a darker symbol.
She was sold in 1986, like this:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

This set had Posey with dark tulips, as well as Gypsy, Hopscotch, Snowflake and Honeycomb.
This Cherries Jubilee was sold in the UK and any country that also had Gypsy and Honeycomb in this set.

...Up to this point the Wiki is correct. However...

#3
European Cherries Jubilee, (circa 1986)
Has curly hair and a dark symbol. This is she:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

She was NOT sold in the UK. She was NOT a groom and style pony. She was NOT sold in the set with Bow Tie and AJ.
She WAS sold in continental Europe, in countries where they had HK versions of this set in 1986 (the Netherlands is one such place).
She was sold in a set with Hopscotch, Snowflake, WHITE TOOTSIE (Hong Kong), Posey (dark symbols) and Lickety Split (yes, a different version :D Goodie).
I don't have her backcard, but this is the set she belongs in.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

In some countries this same set was sold with ponies made in Spain or Italy.
In some places (eg Netherlands) this set were sold on the first release UK or US card from 1985, which did not picture the c correct ponies on front or back.

So, in summary.
Groom and Style CJ - sold in 1985, same as US version, in set with CP Bow Tie and AJ
UK CJ - straight hair, in Gypsy and Honeycomb's set, dark symbols.
European CJ - curly hair, dark symbols, in white Tootsie's set.

...If someone could fix the CJ page to reflect this, I would be so grateful.
Also, thank you for coming to my CJ Ted Talk.

Bonus:
The Wikipedia doesn't actually include European Lickety Split, the one listed is the regular groom and style version on the European card (which was sold in the US, in the UK, in Europe, and all over).
The text is correct as far as that goes, but this...
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

is European (second edition) Lickety Split...;)

By which I mean the Basic Fun 40th anniversary releases of Glory, Moondancer and Firefly as plushes.

I ask because my sister bought me Glory for my birthday, and I realised I hadn't seen much discussion about them as actual toys on the forum.

Anyone else have any of these yet and want to discuss?

It's late here now and I'm tired so I'll add pics/something more coherent tomorrow if required. The short version is that I think they're very cute and nicely done...

Pony Corral / Ponies, Price Checks, and Advice (G1-4) (Image heavy)
« on: August 12, 2022, 02:24:26 AM »
Hi all.

I'm on a sorting crusade at the moment. I've not traded/sold ponies in a few years because of university and COVID. These ponies are what's left of my trade box stuff, and they've been sitting under my chair for about 4 years waiting for me to do something with them.

So...I'm trying now.

Most of them are probably not worth a lot, but I need to rehome them. Some general ballpark price estimates on all and any would be appreciated. I prefer to sell through the Arena - I don't use facebook for transactions, and ebay's fees have driven me away from using that (though I have a lot of feedback there).

This is what's in my box. Advice, price suggestions, even offers all considered. Note I will not do longterm holds on anything, as I need space. I do like to ship internationally if I can but shipping will be as cost according to RM. I've not shipped anything since before Brexit and COVID so have no idea about international rates atm. I'm in the UK, UK offers are fine.

@BrightRabbit, if you read this, I still have baby starbow in my box and if you still want her after so many years, send me a PM. I'll send her to you :)

Some important notes:
Melody is missing a wheel. Her headset is intact but missing its ribbon.
THe set of Sniffles and Snookums as twins is in poor condition, fading and tail rust.
Bow Tie is missing a tail and has some plastic damage
Some of the baby ponies have tail rust or trims.

A lot of the ponies are not in mint condition, most all are played with albeit some only lightly. Many are pretty common I think. Possible exceptions are Melody, Paintingtime and Buttons with the large button symbol, who are in decent shape and semi-htf (Buttons is a movie star pony, she's not deflocked. In the UK we had both types of symbol on Buttons).

There are two play and care set (European) baby Lickety Splits. One has her bottle and comb and is in great condition. The other is a bit more played with but ok, no accessories.

The G4s are in a range of conditions, Spitfire, Holly Dash etc are great, a couple of the little Fluttershys are horrible.

Windy and Firefly are also in nice condition albeit a lot more common :)

There is one fakie.

Flutters are wingless, frizzy and faded.

The books are all in used, read condition, some have some marks on the pages, none are missing pages as far as I can see. I also have some G1 annuals if anyone is interested albeit these are heavy o.O.

I also have a bunch of accessories but I'll deal with them another time.

As I mentioned in the things that made me smile thread, today I got 2 backcards for ponies I had as a child. The one from Rainbow Magic being the most special. In December 1991, Mum and Dad decided to buy me a pony as a cheer up present because Mum was in hospital having just been diagnosed with blood cancer, and I chose Rainbow Magic because her backcard story said she could grant wishes. I also remember asking Mum if she wanted Rainbow Magic to stay with her in the hospital for good luck.

I never kept my original pony's backcard, so I've spent a lot of time trying to get one, either a MOC on UK card or the card on its own. Finally I managed to do so. The fact it was around my birthday is even more appropriate.

So today for the first time in years I read that story that had given me inspiration when I was nine years old.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Here it is (I cropped it from the card).

As I remembered, it mentions her ability to grant wishes. But what I had forgotten is that her ability to do so gives the other Rainbow Curl ponies their identity as Rainbow Curl ponies.

The others aren't named in the story, nor is there any mention of the Rainbow Mountain, which is where I *think* they lived in the comic (as custodians of the Rainbow babies...someone fact check me on that if I'm wrong).

But in the UK, this set all have Rainbow in their name.

So I wonder if that prefix came about, lore-wise, because of this wish granted by Rainbow Magic. Which would mean their original names were Rider, Cloud and Storyteller, but their wish made them Rainbow as well.

As for Rainbow Magic herself, the fact that the ponies mistake her at first for an actual double rainbow kind of suggests she's something different. Maybe the manifestation of 'rainbow magic' herself, hence it being her name.

On UK cards at this time, one pony from the set was usually drawn as the figurehead for the whole set. I find it interesting that it's Rainbow Magic on the rainbow curl cards here, because Rainbow Rider was the one used in a lot of the advertising from this year. It does reinforce this idea that she is the 'originator' and the others came as a result of her spell

...I'm not going to lie, I have always hated the US names because absolutely no thought at all went into them. But looking at this makes me feel like there's an actual story base here for those UK names to make sense.

I don't have the cards for Cloud and Rider. I do have Storyteller's but it's away in the folder at the moment. But maybe we should think of her as the one who wrote the stories - including this one about the origin of the Rainbow Curl ponies themselves...?

Here ends my massively overthought and overanalysed theorising on the Rainbow Curl ponies in the UK.

But I feel like we need some sparkly magical lore discussions right now. So. Discuss?

Was this cushion with Windy on it.

The picture was one she drew. I have the picture as well, and will be getting it framed.

Windy was my first pony, hence the choice.

Just saw this on the BBC news.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-58283965

Creator of the Worst Witch, which, I don't care what anyone says, was a better series of books than Harry Potter (and came first).

A sad loss to the world.

As the title says, I haven't had notifications for threads for several days now :/

I have tried going into my settings and deselecting then reselecting the options but that hasn't worked.

I think this happened when the site was having its gremlins, it's a gremlin that I still have. If it could be resolved it would be great...

Thank you!

Pony Corral / One thing each generation does best?
« on: January 09, 2021, 04:40:10 PM »
So there are probably lots of things we all love about our respective favourite generations, but looking at it objectively, suggest one (just one) thing that you think each generation does better than the other generations.

It can be toy or animation related, advertising, franchises, merchandising, any of the above.

For me I'm going to put forth the following:

G1
The variety and creativity of the toyline. There are so many different species of pony in this line. None of it makkes sense when you try to piece together what Hasbro were doing globally, but for sheer variety of product, G1 wins hands down for me.

G2
The balance of "main" vs "additional" characters. I have thought for a while that G2 has a nice balance with how much repetition it uses in releases. We see various diferent versions of SunSparkle, Ivy, Lightheart etc, although some of them look quite different - but there are also a lot of new and unique characters in each release.

G3.
Seasonal ponies. While I don't like that most of these were US Target exclusives, the concept was awesome and should have existed in the other generations more widely than it did.

G4.
Marketing. Hands down. The number of franchises and promotions and collaborations G4 has has spread the brand very far and wide. I know some people will probably say FIM but for me the biggest strength of G4 is its ability to mutate into many different things (such as the kotobukiya dolls, for example) to reach a wider audience.

I am not including 3.5 or PL because I don't consider them separate generations, but you can if you like.

*Just keep it positive*

Off Topic / Seeking inspiration for a distanced Christmas...
« on: November 22, 2020, 06:00:30 PM »
Hi all :)
So as I've mentioned before, it's unlikely we're gonna have a normal family Christmas this year.
The Government have announced that families will have a window they can meet up in, but (and it depends what happens when lockdown lifts), it seems unlikely Naynie can come back here since she basically needs to self-isolate for 2 weeks before she can safely come into the 'bubble' given Mum's immune system. That means she has to leave Oxford at latest on the 10th, and I can't see that happening.

We have a lot of traditions as a family and for various reasons I won't go into here, the idea of having them without her bothers me.

But I don't want to mess up Christmas for my family, and I'd like it not to be a complete disaster. Especially for Naynie, who is making the biggest sacrifice if she can't come home. It is already going to be hard enough with most everyone else being able to celebrate and being surrounded by that on every platform while our family are probably going to miss out.

So I thought I'd ask you guys for some ideas, fresh inspiration, things that might make the holiday less oppressive or weird. Obviously the most important thing is being safe.

We've already talked about having Naynie dictate to us how to do the tree (because she's the one who always gives the orders) via skype and stuff, and probably will hook the PC up to the TV on Christmas Day so we can open presents together, although it won't be the same. But I really think that it will be easier not trying to make it the same, and so any great new ideas from outside would be welcomed.

Just a note - my parents are both over 70. They're pretty lively but have health problems. Nothing too mad. Also, none of us drive. I mean, they did, but they sold the car. I can't navigate, so I don't.

Any suggestions cannot involve people from outside. Or, probably, places beyond the local walkable area...(I feel like convincing them to do that in the cold might be hard going mind you)

Another note - nobody in this house drinks to excess - sister and I don't drink at all.

Final note - we usually do games at New Year and probably will even if Naynie and her partner aren't with us. That's actually much easier to get my head around, tbh, so I'm really talking about Christmas itself.

(And also, anyone else in a similar situation, feel free to chip in, maybe we can all come up with some ideas. I know Thanksgiving is coming up in the US too; my friend in Arlington has already told me she's spending it with her cat and exchanging virtual turkey with her sister :P)

Pony Corral / Do you have Baby Countalot in your collection?
« on: November 14, 2020, 04:29:23 PM »
So I am just curious.

If you have Baby Countalot, which one do you have?

Beads at the front of the abacus?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

or beads at the back of the abacus?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

(excuse the yellowing, sister's decidedly better one was in storage when I was doing the pictures)

It's been my impression that the latter is the more common one, but I thought I'd put this to the test.

Also, if you remember where you got yours from, that would also be interesting. I've been told the first one is more common in Europe, but both ours came from the UK.

Pony Corral / How many G1 baby ponies are in your collection??

How many G1 baby ponies do you have?

After seeing PonyBookworm and LadyAmalthea's nursery pictures I got curious to go count the babies in my cupboard. My sister and I share a collection so there are some ponies she has that I don't. So I only counted mine.

Including only loose baby ponies, I counted 222. I am not sure how much it would be if I included MOC since I can't get at them. There are maybe about another 40 or so MIP but I'm not going to count them as I can't see them right now to check. I think I also have some other loose newborn twins somewhere since I didn't see Noodles and Doodles in my counting. I have a feeling some of my twin pairs are with their accessories in the Rattles & Tattles box. So I only counted what was obviously in my cupboard shelves.

Count included:
All baby ponies including nirvana, variants, newborns, teenies, baby sea ponies and merbabies. Also pretty pals.

Count did not include:
MOC ponies, custom ponies, fakie ponies, ponies from other generations.

I'm curious to know - how many babies do YOU have in your collection??

(Please don't include HQG1C babies or other custom babies or fakies, genuine G1 ponies only please. But you can include MIP ones if you have them to hand, I just can't see mine to count them accurately atm xD.)

Post pictures too if you like!

Pictures of some of my mad babies in situ:

It's your birthday and you're out shopping for ponies.

(Assume you don't have any of the ponies in this post, if in fact you are lucky enough to own some/all of them)

A seller has the following ponies on their sale table.

Sunburst
Lightning
Ice Crystal
Fireball
Tornado
Thundercloud.

Yep, a full set of Mountain Boys.

But wait! Who's that on the shelf behind them?

It's Rapunzel.

The MBs are being sold as a lot for $150.
Rapunzel is being sold for $150.

You have exactly $150.

Which do you buy?

All ponies are in excellent condition and come with their accessories (MBs also have their stickers).

You cannot borrow money from someone else or go back and buy the other - they will have gone by the time you return. You also can't ask a friend to buy them - you are shopping on your own.

Please explain your decision in your post!!

Pony Corral / Which pony would you pick?
« on: April 20, 2020, 09:19:40 AM »
So just for fun, imagine you were at a second hand store, and there were two ponies on the shelf but you only could afford one. Both are in mint condition. We'll say they're priced at $5/€5/£5/whatever your preferred currency is each.

Rules - you can't ask someone else to buy the other one.
The other one will be gone next time you go to the shop.
You can't ask the store to hold the pony.
You don't own either of the ponies. (If you already have one of the two, or both of them, you must pretend you don't)

It's literally one OR the other.

But you can choose your own reasons for which one you buy (rarity, cost, childhood nostalgia, colours, anything you like).

Which one would you choose, from the following list (answer all or any). I tried to include a few other gen ones but most are G1, feel free anyone to suggest new pairs if they like from G2,3 or 4 and I will add them to this post.

ROUND ONE
1. Night Glider or Munchy
2. Mimic or Bright Eyes TE
3. Christmas G3 Minty or G3 Target Snowflake
4. G4 Feathermay or Honeybuzz
5. G2 Water Lily or G2 Copper Glow
6. Baby Gusty or Baby Ribbon (play and care, not BBE)
7. Rapunzel or Sweet Scoops
8. Fizzy or Wind Whistler (SS)
9. Princess Pristina or Blueberry Baskets
10. Red Roses or Starglow (any version)

ROUND TWO (Suggestions from Otocolobus_manul, tailrustedtealeaf and Ponyfan)
11. Diamond Dreams or Lemon Treats?
12. pure white Taffy or pure white Quackers?
13. TAF Ribbon (Note, I think this should be TAF Buttons?) or MGR Sparkler?
14. G2 Study and Play or Nosy and Click?
15. G3 Bay Breeze or Rosey Posey?
16 G4 prototype Minty A or prototype Sweetie Blue?
17. Watercolor Misty or Pearly Tiny Bubbles
18. Pajama Case Plush Cotton Candy or Bowtie?
19. Plush Baby Lofty or Baby Lickety Split?
20. Cuteasaurus or ChaCha (Llama)?

I'm gonna add a Round Three as well!
21. G4 Holly Dash or Haven Bay?
22. Sunburst or Tornado?
23. Tux & Tails or Satin & Lace (any version)?
24. Rattles and Tattles (newborn) or Sandcastle and Shovels?
25. G4 Starswirl or G4 Rainbow Flash?
26. Waterfall with Cascade or Kitchen Playset?
27. Peppermint Crunch or Raspberry Jam?
28. G3 SLH Rarity or SLH Sunny Salsa?
29. G2 Miss Painter or Hip Holly?
30. Clover or Patch?

Bonuses from Ponybookworm and Ponyfan:

Sugarberry/Strawberry Fair or Sweet Tooth/Lollipop?
TE Bright Eyes or Tales Bright Eyes?
G4 Songbird Serenade or Tempest Shadow?

Feel free to add more suggestions!

Pony Brag Arena / Haven Bay
« on: March 25, 2020, 09:56:11 AM »
I mentioned this before but a couple of weeks ago (which to most of us probably feels like months ago in a different world) I nabbed a decent priced Haven Bay on ebay.

She was in transit when the US decided to stop people travelling between the UK and US, and I wasn't sure whether the post would be affected or whether she'd sit in Chicago for months until things settled down.

But no, she made it through safely. Yesterday she arrived. Having come safely through quarantine (also known as the antibacterial spa bath), she's now ready to say hi.

Here are some pics of her exploring the plants wintering on my windowsill. Spring is here.
