Pony Brag Arena / Thrift Store Haul Video! :D
« on: December 31, 2019, 07:17:23 AM »
It's been awhile since I've checked in here. But a recent thrift store haul has revived my MLP passion again. Things in the model horse world have been getting too dramatic and I needed something fun and cheery to get me through. So here's a quick little video I did showing my haul and their makeovers :) I just LOVE cleaning up old, dirty, played with ponies!

Enjoy!: https://youtu.be/FZfWKjWtX2s

Can anyone use any of these?I was going through and condensing my body box and before I removed these from their boxes and chuck them back in the bin, I was curious if anyone needed these? whether it be for customizing or collecting. I just know I'm never going to have the time for them.

$20 plus actual postage for all in box (as pictured)
OR
$20 w/free USA shipping as bodies out of box withOUT accessories, DVD and charms. (Just the 4 ponies, bird and rabbit)

Customs / Just poppin' back in to show a recent pony custom :)
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:54:21 PM »
Hey guys! It's been a while since I've been in here...what have I missed?
It's just been crazy busy around here with life and regular model horse commissions and sales pieces so I haven't really had to chance to pony around with the vinyls in awhile.  :(  BUT I just wanted to pop in and show a really quick custom I did for my mom for mothers day this year. It was done on a MLP fakie. I sculpted the mane & tail and painted using acrylics, some glitter and embellished with a little rhinestone :) He's a little messy because I only had a day to pull it off but I'm oober happy with him

You can check out more pics of him on my website here: http://crileycustoms.weebly.com/bowie-pony.html

Love WIP threads. One can learn alot from jsut watching someone else work! I find them very useful and fun to see how others tackle different things. I also prefer separate threads for each project.

I like WIP for big projects, but updated in larger bunches. Definitely do not need an update every time you put one plug of hair in or whatever. For more simple customs I prefer just the finished project. I think it adds a nice mystery when you don't know exactly how they did it!
Good point.

I'm noticing alot of you use dullcote to seal..which, is fine by me and glad to know that is what works in the end, super! ....BUT....when pastelling, one needs to spray seal between each layer to build up the color....and that can get VERY pricey with dullcote. Normally on my model horses I use Krylon  for teh between layers and dullcote for my final layers. Since Krylon may not play nice with ponies, what would you suggest I use between the layers when pastelling?

Another question...if a pony goes tacky in areas due to whatever sealer as used, would re-sealing it in dullcote fix the problem?

Anyone ever try the spray modpodge?

I don't typically prime, but I use acrylic and not pastels.  If I were to prime I'm very lightly sand the whole pony and use a good coat of artist acrylic paint.  A lot of gessos are cheaper grade acrylic and are more brittle and tend to not adhere as well.  Good acrylics have more flexibility which helps them stay adhered to sure a soft surface.

Neat idea! I may try that next time. I use professional grade acrylics. Never even thought of the gesso quality before!

Thanks for starting this! I'm one of those peeps :)

I had some issues with krylon but I don't know if it was because of me not waiting for it to cure or if it was a bad reaction...I'm nervous to try again after all the hard work I did on that Epona...hoping to get some more insight for another go...

Also, what kind of primer do you guys use? I believe I used krylon that time too. I did some pastelling on my piece which is why i needed the krylon..dullcote is way too expensive to use on every layer so i usually save it for the end (didn't on that last one though..maybe it would have fixed the issue if i sealed it in dullcote in the end I dunno). I plan on trying the modpodge for my next.

Interested in reading what everyone uses in the primer/sealer deparment.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Everything about this! Absolutely beautiful! Love the tail too!

Also, a bit off topick and this may seem an odd question, but do you happen to have any old (ore even new) pics of the Nunley's Carousel horses? I've been wanting to do a portrait of my favorite horse that I rode all the time when I was there. It was the big outer black horse, white hair, open mouth and it had roses on the saddle and stuff. I have the nunley's book but all the pics are black and white and it's on an angle so I can't really see the details. Looking for some good clear pics.

Do you have any craft or hardware stores near you? You can try a krylon or other brand spray sealer if you can't get modpodge in time. But where and why are you shipping the pony? If it is for a commission, wouldn't you want to be extra cautious and not slap something on there that my damage the pony down the line? I'm sure the buyer would understand waiting a few days until you get the proper sealer to assure a long lasting pony.

If you purchased it on eBay  then you should still have record of who you bought it from if you left feedback and visa versa.  If you paid by Paypal, look in your paypal history it WILL be there.  I'd send an email off to them seeing if it's ok with them . If you can't find the original owner and have done your absolute best to try, then it should be OK.
