Nirvanas, Weird Tail Clamps and Value?
« on: March 05, 2014, 11:56:38 AM »
Hey Nirvana gurus!

I just had a weird question...

So many Nirvana ponies have different or weird or unique tail clamps - like, I was looking at one of my Italian ponies and she has that weird, vertical clamp with the fluted edge versus the regular tail washer you see in like the average US release pony. So... what I wanted to know is, if a Nirvana has a cut tail, or a missing tail, and it is replaced (let's for now, say it's replaced with a genuine MLP tail, but probably not like necessary the same Nirvana tail, ya know? So Italian Peachy I replace with a US Peachy tail, or something) - but now I have to use zip ties to keep it in, versus the weird, Italian tail clamp.

Now on a Nirvana I would always mention a replacement tail if I was selling one with one - but does having a tail that is missing that clamp affect the value? Not missing but, replaced with zipties - so, you've changed the original tail situation. I hope that makes sense?

What about in a situation where you're restoring tail rust and you need to ditch the clamp or whatever but can use the original tail, with zipties?

I'm just wondering because I know for like a US pony, if you're using a replacement MLP tail, the fact that it's ziptied vs with a washer very rarely affects the value of the pony, and does prevent things like tail rust in the future, etc....

The reason I ask is because I have a few Nirvanas with cut tails and I was thinking about replacing them and then I started wondering about these tail clamps and how they affect the value of a pony...

Thank you for all your input! :)

If you plan on giving a pony a replacement tail, save the cut tail. You can send it with her if you choose to sell in the future :)

If the tail is rusty and the washer and clamp are rusted I would replace them. The results if the rust if left is worse than replacing the washers IMHO. If you choose to sell the pony on, it's wise to say you've replaced the washer/tail clamp.

I would do the same as pkw with the tail... I think I actually did do that with one pony, despite the massively bobbed tail!

If you replace the tail, even if the tail is from the same country, I would always make a note of it. If you've fixed the original tail with zipties, it would still be a good idea to mention it, though I don't think it would affect the price much, if at all. Better safe than sorry.

Yes I definitely said that I would always disclose if a pony had a replacement tail, but saving the original tail is not a bad idea, that one I hadn't thought of! :)

Yep, agreeing here with pkw here - keep that tail, some collectors prefer an original cut tail to the pristine new one, and that way the option is there, and you might get a buyer you wouldn't have otherwise.

I haven't sold any of my nirvanas yet, but I always mention a washer/ziptie swap, even on common US ponies, I'd hate for someone to think they are getting a pristine original pony when they are actually restored somewhat. Even some common ponies are super HTF in original mint condition, and that's precisely what they might be looking for.

I honestly think for now I'll just be keeping their original tails, I am really interested by all the weird, different tail clamps that were used in different countries... but if I had to replace or remove one due to rust issues, again, something I would always disclose on a Nirvana.
