How do you get hair to blend really well?
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:54:58 AM »
Every time I rehair a pony even if I'm using several different colors it always seems to turn out candy cane striped, or with a visible pattern... how do some of you get those really fine blends where you don't see those stripes of colors?

If i want a really soft blend, i usually take chunks of both colors and comb them together before I actually start rehairing.

Yes, you can use a fine tooth comb :) I make most of our custom blends by hand for the site, what I do is take two or however many colors you need and blend by placing alternate strands. When I'm doing my own blends, I usually alternate holes with colors.

Be warned when blending Nylon it tends to get very static very easily. What I do is run my hand down the hanks a fair few times before starting, to remove any static charge. Also make sure to brush the hanks well before starting to blend other wise you can get in a pickle with knots. I've found with any synthetic hair, is to brush from the bottom up. Working any knots down as you go, so you don't end up having to work the top knots down through the whole length of hair and/or other knots. If that makes sense?

I'm good at keeping knots out of the hair so I'm not worried about that part :3

@enchantress: yeah I get the custom blends from dollyhair a lot, and then alternate the strands, but it really didn't do what I wanted it to sadly, I think maybe brushing it together might work to get the softer look I was trying for maybe :3

I do rehaired with the needle and thread method and while I'm sectioning/cutting the pieces of hair, I make piles of color #1 plugs, color #2 plugs, and a mix of some of each. It Sorta works if you do them in a pattern of all #1, all mix, all #2, or just a random pattern if you want closer to realistic colors. I don't have as much experience with a rebooting tool...but hope this helps a little bit.

that does help :3 I use a rerooting tool, but I think it's basically the same method as far as sorting the hair goes :3

May seem a bit, weird, but do it two ways.

Method 1:
When I go to rehair a plug, I'll take a bit from color 1 then a bit from color 2, place them in my needle, then plug it.

Method 2:
I separate hank 1 and hank 2 into half. Take the half from hank 1 and the half from hank 2 from the middle and combine them. Carefully roll the hair a little bit in your hand and carefully pick little sections out with your finger nails (since mine are long) or with a needle/tooth pick (whatever you have) and just lay it back into the hair pile in your hand and keep rolling a bit. When you have some hairs mixed in, pick out a few with your rehairing tool and plug!

I wet the hair down when I brush it.. But yeah.. I think just spend some time combing it and you will find a great difference. Just be sure to hold it tight.

Agreed, I didn't hold on properly once and the result was a nightmare

My method:

Tie the hanks together at the center.  Wash the hair with shapoo and condition.  The washing and conditioning will help keep the hair from frizzing and tangling again.  After you rinse brush out all kinks and tangles and let dry.  Then after it is dry brush the hanks out a bit.  Then untie and take the hank, split in half, and put one on top of the other, split in half down center again, then back on top of each other, kinda like cutting a deck of cards.  After a few more splits, retie and comb through again a bit.  You will get a well blended hank of hair that looks like they were made together.
~Feel free to remind me to leave you feedback!  I'm forgetful!~
